Any way to turn off play names?

Not sure about last gen but it might be the same. On Xbox One: in online, Pause - Online - options - Player marker (I think that's what it's called). Choose "Marker", "Name" or "crew tag and name".

You have it right go to Online Tab > Options > Player Marker > None or Off

 

I play like that, cause I don't like to see names over peoples heads
