Max Payne 1 & 2 from Remedy Entertainment

Recommended Posts

Can't believe no one's made a topic for this yet. And no, we're not just talking 3, we're talking about the entire series. So I'm gonna kick this off by saying 2 is the best in the series.

Takes Bullet Time to a whole new level.

I was thinking of getting Max Payne 3. I have heard mixed opinions about it. Is it good?

Most people don't like it because it loses the noir aspect. But that doesn't make it a bad game. He still Max Payne but looks more like James McCaffrey.

PM me if you want more answers.

Max Payne certainly has evolved with each game. Or he's had plastic surgery numerous times :p Imagine if Sam Lake stayed as his face model for all three games, I feel like he still wouldn't look as aged or worn out by 3 (natural Scandinavian nonexistent aging).

I always wondered why he had a smirk on his face throughout the first one, too. Like if he was thinking about something mildly funny throughout his entire ordeal.

All three games are amazing if you ask me. I especially love playing the first one during the wintertime, it just fits with the whole dark and snowy atmosphere that the game had. I also love how we essentially have a beginning, middle, and end to Max's story. He loses his family, experiences even more depression and failure while just trying to do his job, and then finally has some closure by the end.

The soundtrack is a work of art too. On par with GTA V's score.

I actually found it to be somewhat better than GTA V's. Not that V has a bad soundtrack, but personally I thought that Max Payne 3's was more enjoyable. I'll never forget these tracks.

Tears by Health in the airport was great.

Gotta also love the classic quotes Max makes throughout the game; And there it was, the soundtrack of my life.

Loved this conversation he has with Passos, made me laugh my ass off.

Ha, quite funny how Ryan never shows emotion in his face either. If you don't believe me, watch gangster squad.

Yeah man, he was great in Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines.

I've only ever played Max Payne 3 by good lord was it an amazing game. I have played through it twice and could do it again a third time if I still had a copy of it. My favorite level was this one.

You need to play 1-2.

I'm actually considering picking up a PS2 at a local pawnshop for $20 and ordering 1 and 2 off of eBay and trying them out. I was originally going to get them off steam but decided against it and thought I should play them on console since I'm not very good at PC action games.

And if we don't?

I'm just about to jack off to this topic.

But in all seriousness, all three games, in my opinion, are immaculate. I honestly can't find anything wrong with them.

Sure, Max Payne 3 doesn't have the comic-book cutscenes, the setting is different, and Max isn't the same Max. But like DarthShinobi said, the change did the game good. I would kinda get bored of the dark NY alleys, through Chapter IV and XIII were among my favorites. f*ck, I don't even know if there is a chapter I hate.

The soundtrack, holy shiet. Have +20 min tracks of the UFE station, the Panama Canal, the Tiete River, the Galatians Stadium, and the cemetery. The cemetery, holy f*ckkkkk

The story was also really good as well (IMO). Maybe it was a little broken plot-wise, but like the other two games, it was dark (especially at the end), and R* surely knew about the back-stabbing deal that went on with 2, because it's there in 3.

If this game would make the PS4 and Xbox One, graphics-wise it would blow ANYTHING out of the water. On PC it looks breath-taking, even if there are a few things in there which don't make sense (why do shells and other debris like paper disappear just like that?)

The only bad things I can say are:

-The Last Stand bullsh*t (I just don't like it, but there's Old School :) )

-There are weapons you just cannot use enough in Singleplayer. I was disappointed by the lack of Desert Eagle (you can use it only 4 times in the game, and one of those moments is an on-rails bullet time event), and there weren't many opportunities to use machine guns, which were brutal, in sound, in looks, and in performance.

Thank you for making this topic. Can't believe there wasn't one already.

I played MP2 all the way until the last mission. Then I had a hard drive crash and nasty things happened.

When I got my sh*t back together, I said "screw MP2, let's jump straight to 3". And my was I blown away.

This game does everything perfectly.

Max is a perfectly animated character. The way he moves, shoots, jumps, takes cover, and all that...it's just awesome.

The bullet-time is cinematic and fun and just amazing.

It has the level of detail you'd expect from a Rockstar game. Max's leather coat has its own physics, and eating painkillers actually shows Max eating them.

The cover system adds realism, and I really like how the magic pockets were removed. You can only have 1 long gun, which he holds in his hand.

By far my favourite TPS. I still think 3 is much better than 2, but that's because I'm only looking at gameplay. 3 is bar far the best on gameplay, but this is given considering it had a much larger budget and came out in 2012.

I assume most people here who prefer 1/2 over 3 is solely due to story/atmosphere.

Gameplay wise, nothing can hold a candle to 3.

And a shame, we probably won't see a MP4 anytime soon because MP3 didn't sell well.

It's sad to see no love for the orignal because the later titles are technically superior? :p

MP2 is good, but it's nowhere as amazing as original, esp. all the later parts of the campaign are absolutely boring.

For me, Max Payne - Classic, Rules!!..with the fantastic single-player story and lengthy campaign in mind. There will always be a place for the original in my heart. I don't play Max Payne 2 at all, while Max Payne 3 is good for having some challenging difficulty.

But, the original Max Payne will remain the best shooter experience, without a shadow of doubt, on the strength of the classic shooting mechanics, the characters, and addictive voice acting with the narrative.

But I know that some people would rather still prefer, Max Payne with better physics and flashy graphics.

Max Payne 1. Possibly the best game ever.

I still remember buying the PC version when it was released, I had Celeron733mhz and 32mb nVidia card.

Remedy even gave their tools to community for modding. The game still rocks. Runs perfectly on 7, only widescreen hack needed.

While, I haven't played it on PC (since I'm kinda sh*t with computer stuff), so I played it on PS2 and holy sh*t, was it awesome. The gameplay was excellent, especially bullet time. It also had wide open spaces for huge gunfights (one location I remember was in a warehouse in the docks blasted them all away with the pump action). But Max Payne is also pretty f*cking hard, because only a few bullets will finish you off. The story was good, it begins with Max returning home from his job (he's in the NYPD btw,) and finds his wife and baby daughter murdered by junkies, high on a drug called Valkyr. He kills them all, and wanting to bring down the corporation that made the drug, he joins the DEA.

I do have a couple of gripes with it, I f*cking hated the nightmare levels, dark twisted, and you'll have to make a leap of faith pretty often. There was also that bit in the foundry where your are riding in a minecart and you have to shoot mines, so you can continue, then at the end of the ride your ambushed by a bunch of guys, while that isn't hard, the minecart is a one hit KO if you get in front of it.

But yeah, I'd highly recommend the original, though I haven't played 2 all the way through and haven't played 3 yet, but I've heard good things about them, so I'm probably going to enjoy them.

Tears by Health in the airport was great.

Gotta love Dick Justice though: "Tonight it seemed like all the angels in heaven decided to take a piss, because when you're in a situation like mine, you can only think in metaphors."

I've been a big fan of Max Payne for a while now. Used to play it on the PS2 when it was still a relatively fresh game loved it then too. The atmosphere was a main selling point for me, it was perfect, also the way the cutscenes were designed in a comic-fashion was such a good move. What a truly fresh way to tell the story.

It's one of the few games where I feel that the atmosphere was just perfect. The cold, wintry weather of NYC to signal how Max has basically lost everything, and has just become cold and quite ruthless. A far cry from before when we see it all Sunny and how his life is good. When it opens, and you go in to Max's house to see it all smashed it. I still find that to be terrifying, how it all just changes in an instant for him.

Also, who can forget that Nightmare sequence, that was so f*cking haunting. Where you just hear the baby crying in the distance, and make your way through a maze. Crazy sh*t, that used to scare the sh*t out of me lol. The Original is by far the best IMO, nailed everything down perfectly in terms of atmosphere, gameplay and story. The second and third are both really well done sequels though, although I'll admit to being quite put off by some of Max Payne's 3 setting at first, because it was off from what I was used too.

Max Payne 3 is just beautiful though, I loved the moments when you go back to classic Max, and he's wearing he's usual gear.
