Nvidia announces Titan X (GM200 "Big Maxwell" ?) with 12 GB VR

Man, I was excited about the new Titan early on, but then I've read the specs. The single precision is impressive, so it should still be a very solid card for gaming, but they've nerfed double precision. Original Titan was over 1TF in double. This one's less than 300GF. Very disappointing. Titan was supposed to bring balance to the force CPU/GPU numerical precision parity.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

I'm trying hard not to buy one. Will see how long I will resist.

Tough if I sell my gtx 690, I might buy one.

I'd try and hold out till Nvidia's Pascal GPUs next year. Nvidia claims something like 10x the performance of maxwell, which I seriously doubt, but it wont hurt to wait just in case.

Yep I agree with this. I had a massive stiffy when I saw the Titan X. Then I came across this just now and had a mini seizure. Looks like I'll keep my OG Titan for a little while longer.

Since, I want more Vram I think I will buy a titan black and then i'll be able to hold until pascal.

You might as well get a Titan X if you're looking at the Titan cards, I'm pretty sure the two cards cost about as much as each other, in fact, I think the Titan X might be cheaper.

Though keep in mind that Titan cards aren't exactly great when it comes to the price:performance. That being said, the TX seems like a Titan card worth getting. However, the Titan Black will do double-precision floating point operations much better than the X, so if you need a Titan for that then go with the black. If not then get the X or the 980.

It wouldn't hurt to wait for AMD's 300 series though.

I bought the titan black yesterday not long after I wrote my comment.

I bought the titan black new in box (from a guy in local ad, that I had already bought a gtx 680 few years ago) for 700$ canadian.

Sure I would have like to get the titan x but then after looking what it costs in canada, it would have been too much for what I can spend on my pc.

With all the taxes, shipping, conversion from us to can $, the titan X is more than 1400$ can.

And that's maybe even more (maybe someone from canada here who bought one can confirm) because the guy who I bought the titan black from has a titan X for sale for 1500$ can.

Usually he is under retail price.

Wow that's not a bad deal. In either case you got a steal and you'll love your card. I love mine and it'll be a tough pill to swallow if I have to sell it for a new card, but I think I'll keep it and just buy a new card when I decide.

.

From what I've seen online the two cards are in around the $1500 mark, in fact, I found that the Titan X was cheaper (just under $1400 for the cheapest card) while the Titan Black usually came in at around $1500. $700 is one hell of a deal.

Can't wait to try it. After work that's the first thing I'm going to do. Too bad I couldn't spend more because the same guy has a titan z (used) for sale for 1000$ can.

What do you plan to do with it? If it's gaming then the Titan Z falls flat when compared to say 780 SLI or a 295X. Just saying.

I've seen GTX 780s and 780Tis go for dirt cheap on Ebay.

Only gaming, I know sometimes the performance is better with the 780ti (which I had some time ago), but the constant demand for vram made me go with the titan black.

Ebay is not the best for me, considering all the taxes and importation fee. Those for sale on ebay canada, located in canada, are most of the time overpriced.

For the titan z, from a price perspective, it was a deal. So I could have sell it, in let's say in a year, for at least the same price.

Thinking of buying a Titan X sometime this year since my current card is slowly dying (voltage instability). I've seen and heard nothing but good things about this card, but is it really worth the $1,000?

Gonna keep digging around before I jump on it. It's either one of these or a 980 Ti.

No, not when the 980 Ti performs just as well (I even think I saw it beat the Titan X in some cases) for however many hundred dollars less it is. Nothing gamewise needs 12GB of VRAM or even close these days, the only reason I see for going for a Titan X is if you have nothing else to throw money at.

Lets see... blow over a grand and be slower than a cheaper custom 980ti

I guess you could OC the titan, altho since it already comes out of the box with thermal throttle (what a great premium product!) you would need to raise the threshold. Or sort out a custom water loop, assuming you dont want a 90 something degree leaf blower.

Custom cards have better cooling which is why the MSI 980 Ti will clock higher and therefore perform better.

The reference coolers are loud but just cranking up the fan will more than likely keep temps far away from 90C...speaking in terms of the OG Titan.

In any case I'm not even sure if I'll get either card. I might just get a console instead....lol nah. I might have to settle for a 980 or something. Who knows. I'll see in the coming weeks.

This card is amazing. I don't even know what to say other than holy cow.

it chews up and spits out anything I throw at it at 1440p.

One thing I've noticed with this card is that RAM usage is a little higher than before when gaming.

It used to hover around 4GB or so depending on the game with my last card. Now almost every game I play uses right around 8GB. I have 12, so that leave about 4GB available. I think having at least 16GB would be best for this card.

Other than that it's great. The performance is top notch for 1440p max settings :D

You could have saved the money for nVidia Pascal and having 16GB HMB2.
