GTAO phone doesn't support Japanese text

Every time I get a message from a friend in Japanese on the in-game phone, it's just boxes. [][][][]

But my PSN chat supports Japanese no problem.

My disc and PS3 are both Japanese.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's most likely on your friends side...This seems like a problem for R* but maybe someone here can help but that's the only thing i can think of.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm certain it has to be on my side. Most of my friends are well over level 100, so they must be communicating amongst each other normally in Japanese.
