Reviews of working at R*

Recommended Posts

The cons really outweigh the pros for such a larger studio of AAA industry. Not sure how anyone can feel really happy at the end of the day under such work environment where your position is always at risk, yet you have to keep on performing no matter what. Does not sound a good place for the creative freedom to me, let alone encourage to have the freedom to have an opinion. Pretty isolated and suffocating experience to deal.

I feel ashamed to support Rockstar every time I hear about treatment of their employees. It's a mess. With their influence, independence and resources, you'd say they would be above these disgusting practices, but nope.

No wonder so many developers nowadays go indie and other stuff like that. Video game industry is just rotten.

For the amount of employees, it makes perfect sense. R* is the type of company that's always hiring. I would never feel comfortable in a situation like that, but I don't think you're supposed to. Working for a company like that is all about learning and adding something lovely to your resume. Working at R* sounds like a dream job, but we only think about that because of the final products they release. It's still just like any other big company.

I think the ultimate goal is to be making your own games and/or possibly working with a smaller team, with a better environment and more respect.

Reading that does explain why there's so many broken bits to this game though. R* have done a lot of amazing work on V (and other games) but they've also made some mega cock up's as well. I'm so glad I don't work in an office environment, don't think I could stomach all the ego's.

Although I must admit I find it hard to understand how a company that supposedly 'don't know what they're doing' can produce a game like GTA V.

Rockstar produce amazing games despite the lack of communication within their departments, but they rarely ever release anything on time. All their games from the seventh generation and the one next-gen title they have (GTA V) were delayed at some point. Several times in fact. The odds of that changing anytime soon are slim in my view. The management of a company doesn't prevent great games from being made, if they give the developers all the time they need. Edited by Andreas

I see why there are many delays. It's because of the poor treatment of the employees and very short time to reach a certain target. Not the ideal place to work at if you want a bit of space and freedom, but the best place to gain experience and help create amazing games. Considering the Housers barely go out and socialise, they sound like two depressed brothers with no idea how to communicate within a business lmao.

So what i've read is basically this: nice co-workers but aweful, terrible management. Working for rockstargames is bad for your health and ruins your social life. Lots of crunch time no overtime pay and hitlers and himmlers as managers. I think changing diapers of old people all day is more fun.

This definitely explains more than just delays. I didn't know about the horrors going on there, but I wasn't surprised when I read the first page of reviews.

I cannot say it as a fact, but I believe that working at Rockstar is pretty much sh*t. And I wonder if this was going on a few years back.

They have the right thinking, with the whole 'game is first' idea. But they went too over the limit with that idea. Rockstar was never known for releasing games too fast. Truth be told, I'd rather have a game released in 6 years, than have them say it will be released in 5 and then delayd to an unknown date and who knows how many times.

I mean, pretty much every game they made from GTA III onward was delayed. That's just proof of what's going on there.

And quite honestly, this should be changed, but it won't. I remember seeing a video of how The Last of Us was made. I consider that game somewhat overrated, but that's not the point. My point is that, I don't think there were more than 200 people working on that game, yet it won the world over.

Now imagine if Rockstar's management of staff would be at least average. That could definitely improve the quality of the games as well, even if it would take more time to release the game.

Another problem may be that for an AAA company, they sure do take on more than one project.

They are currently working on the single played DLC for GTA V (ha!), along with managing GTA Online, and you can bet your hairy ass they are also working on a new game by now, if not two. GTA's were known to be started as soon as the preceeding one came out. Making V started right after IV was done, and if there will be a GTA VI, it's going to happen the same way.

I'd say that you have to sacrifice the staff to make a good game, but not only is that statement bullsh*t, but also disrespectful, and the list could go on.

K^2 has given a small insight of developing a video game in a topic, and if what he said is true, working for Rockstar is certainly not a nice experience.

At least have some respect for the people who sacrifice their lives for your enjoyment.

Well I was being facetious but I respect Rockstar for the games they produce. How they achieve it doesn't interest me much.

I just read a lot of bitching about the company from supposed ex-employees, yet they continue to produce masterpiece after masterpiece in my opinion, so the way I see it, they can't be going far wrong.

universetwisters

I wonder if they were the same with III and VC and SA, or if this is just a recent trend.
