Yeah, you just need to reread the rules, in regards of properties.

 

Typically, all players start with 20k, and also a car from the list in OP. Properties are available for purchase IF you have enough money to purchase them. An example of this, is how you want to own the Hen House, however, with your current money, you are unable to do so. Also, you claim to start with 40k instead of 20k. I hope this clears things up.
