What is the problem with Sun shadows in GTA V ?

Recommended Posts

I've played a lot during last few weeks and I noticed a strange problem with the sun shadow.

First of all in the dawn, the shadow kind of appear without accuracy, because it's like it passed the moment when the shadows are stretched ... (while at dusk, the shadows lengthen until the sun disappears )

Check the video link below for seeing it in live ( it begin at 0:57 )

Another point is that the shadow may move quickly when you move, and that's really disturbing

I've recorded two exemples of it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvexNGxgw0s#t=100

Why the shadow isn't changed continuously in real time ? Aren't they related to the sun's position ?
Is it a trick to render shadow of far objects without a popping shadow but with a moving one ?
I don't get it, what is wrong with RAGE engine ?

P.S. Sorry about the video, it's more like a potpourri of things and bugs in GTA V and isn't only topic related

Oh what a surprise, Cockstar is at it again!!!

What are the job requirements at the naughty Cockstar Lames studio??? I swear, the pure laziness in making V is astounding...THE f*ckING SHADOWS ARE NOT ALIGNED WITH THE GODDAMN SUN...these kinds of flaws make the game unplayable; GTA V truly is the worst in the franchise...preorder cancelled AGAIN

I have this too, A LOT. I thought I was the only one who noticed it, lol.

Seriously, what is going on with the shadows?

I've noticed the same thing when you stand still, as opposed to walking and running. It's really odd how the shadows only move when you do. If you stand still long enough, they'll "fast forward" and change positions when the game hits an in-game hour. It's very noticeable in places like the forest, when you're on foot and running. Seeing all the trees' shadows move and what-not.

It's just really odd.

On the topic of weird shadows, I've noticed shadows of certain objects like radio towers, trees, even the mountains, move a lot faster when you run, and then slow down when you stop. Like cp1dell said. Some shadows are reacting to your changing movement rather than the Sun's.

Example:

Switching between first and third person causes the shadows to shift a few metres, also occurs when looking through a scope.

Didn't RDR do this, but to a lesser degree? Shadows didn't move in real time, but at the strike of every in-game hour they would slowly move to their next position.

IV's shadows constantly moved.

I feel like it's an optimization thing so shadows don't bog down the system too much.

There is a directional light entity that is separate from the actual sun location. So the shadows aren't position accurate to the location of the sun. I hope modders can fix this but I highly doubt it. This is something you'd need the sdk to edit and fix. Hopefully a professional modder can come in and prove me wrong because it really bothers me a lot.

Oh and also about the shadows moving fast when you move, GTA IV had a mod to tie the games time to real time, so one minute is really one minute. I bet that would help a lot with the sun shadows moving crazy fast when you move. I noticed both these bugs day one on Xbox but figure no one else would notice or care to post. I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

I noticed this day one.

I always thought maybe the sun also did the stop start thing with player movement, and that it was sometimes there only while moving as a kind of way to disguise it. A big example of this is the shadow of Mt chiliad because it is so big it will move extremely fast across the land as the sun goes behind it, no big deal for me, but an immersion breaker at times.

I would love for an option to set the game to real time, but I guess PC will only be able to get this as it would probably interrupt many, many aspects and mechanics of the game

people say they don't give a sh*t about this, or that those who do care have autism, but i bet right now if it were fixed and done properly that there would be so much support and appreciation for how much of a difference is really makes. The early morning and late sunset moments of the day would be so much more immersive and beautiful. but w/e this is gta forums where disagreeing with someone means you have to call them autistic morons instead of just saying it doesn't bother me

Hmmm! maybe do the odd mission / race or two to take your mind off it

They didn't encounter this kind of obstacles in IV because the whole area was mostly flat and only objects producing shadows were buildings, they'll have to go for a new engine next game or seriously overhaul this one to fix issues like these.

I have found the sunsets and sunrises pretty good in GTA. I actually look at the sky and the landscape around me at this time of day, not how my characters shadow is 5 degrees on the wrong angle.

As for the picture you posted, it shows your character in the sunlight, so yes it should have a shadow just like how it does. The problem with the picture is the sun should be slightly over that hill not behind it. Either way playing the game I have never noticed my shadow not being 100% realistic.

wow! a full 5 degrees out, that is just bang out of order

I'm so disappointed right now, I can't believe this broken game was allowed to be released, and that they had the temerity to actually charge us money for it. I mean, this is on PS4 and Xbone 1, why isn't it EXACTLY like real life?

Guise. Hidden surface determination. I posted a link a few replies above. I seriously cannot believe this forum sometimes..

Sorry dude, your answer was way to close to reality and truth than people around here can ever be comfortable with. Of course, the real correct answer here is that they are positioning shadows in such a way as to make people buy cash cards.

It's simple, Osho, there's just no way that people around here will ever be happy with V. Until VI comes out.

But yeah - the trees, the rollercoaster, the shadows - tiny things that people should notice, but not linger on. After all, if you're spending time staring at trees to check their moving, or at the rollercoaster to see if it's moving, or at shadows to see if they look 100% realistic... if you're spending hours doing that, what are you not doing?

You're not playing the game.

And if you're not playing the game, what's the f*cking point in even owning the game or the console? You (the people, not You, Osho) will never, ever be happy with any game, until you've played it for years and years and years and assimilated it into your brain as a positive experience. If you're letting the bullsh*t of advanced technology dictate whether or not you can enjoy something, you may be suffering from some form of Anhedonia or other depressive illness that prevents you from having fun.

gta v sucks, I cancelled my ps2 and pc preorder f*ck C**kstar idiots!!! f*ckin gta sucks now i hate it it sucks so much now ohh god i just broke my ps4 i hate new gen gta v sucks, it is the worst game of all time now!!! UGGHHHH GTA IV IS THE BEST EVER! RISE OF NIKO BELLIIIICCCC!
