If you guys are talking about The True Crime game, then I wouldn't really recomment converting the map, it looks really terrible.

Where just looking at the map and nothing more at this stage, I don't care to much for some of the buildings. I am going to remodel and I am looking for ideas.

I've looked at two of the map layouts already on here a merge between the V map and SA and Vice City.

http://www.gtaist.com/wp-content/uploads/GTA-San-Andreas-HD.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/iP2ZiDa.png

And I am looking at merging Chicago in there too.

I am thinking of a merging between them both including the GTAIV map again up north pretty much where LC is on the SOL map currently - to be replaced. then.. converting all these maps in to one 3 dimensional map, hills and valleys we need to create these map plans again topographically.

fig11.jpg

Once we have added this information into the maps. we can render these into 3dsmax.

Now the tricky bit is. This has never been done for a modding project.

We need to create a script/tool to convert from the 2d map plans once finalized into a 3d map we can use. once this is done then we can start working on building placements and detailing and smoothing out the map. not forgetting texturing it all.

Then finally getting it into game.

Now you may think I am going about this all the wrong way, I could just start creating this in 3dsmax using a land generator, but the thing is I'd never be able to keep to a map plan.

Designing a map plan first and keeping to it this time is what this project is all about.

nah its a nice map, just needs some changes here and there...

Ive been doin some research into the file formats but im not getting anything sadly... i might take a look with a hex editor but cant promise any results... might have to pass it off to someone more experienced to crack

It kinda sounds like you are redoing SA. I hope that GTA V's map will still be included. Unless your planning on turning GTA V's map into a creation of the altered one that is 3X the size and has SF and LV.

Nkjellman; your right on the money, I do plan on using all elements from V, GTAIV, SA and VC into one massive map.

It's a nice challenge.

I am working on some map designs but i'm not the best artist, and I would like others to make / think about a map that includes what I've mentioned and keep the design logical to geographic locations.. the best map gets used.

:)

If you have previous experience with reverse-engineering formats you might want to give some input: http://gtaforums.com/topic/762753-wipiiivcsa-gtabox-need-community-input/, I'm posting proof of work very soon as people have requested.

Why on earth would you guys want to use True Crime's LA? Use GTA V's map. lol

I have never played True Crime, but I know it is a PS2 era game. Due to that, it won't match GTA V's map in quality, not even the last gen version. Also, GTA V's map is the HD era version of LS, so I see no reason to change it to a LA map from a different game.

Edit: @X-Siti: Are you altering the HD era maps so they are connected? A country side that resembles the US geographically, rather than an ocean in between? Good luck with that challenge. I recommend examining The Crew's map if you want something to guide you.

I am looking into many ways to do this and the True LA map is just to gather ideas also, it is a massive map 4 times bigger then SA.

It looks bad, It looks like they did the land base for LA then just throw in random buildings there, There's nothing to do and nothing unique in the city, it's really empty.

My suggestion is just convert the land, then add your own buildings there, it'll be perfect then.

I have been looking high and low for a way to convert the map... sadly it is not going so well, I am going to see if I can get this dev to help me out with the file header's so that it can atleast be extracted from the format it is in.... but right now I am out of options...

on an unrelated note, I extracted files from 25 to Life's .Hog format... anyone who played it knows that it had a fairly decent character customization option, which I want to extract everything from it and replace Player.img with a custom one... Mexican/White/Asian customizable player model anyone? ;)

889SAeR.png

the models are saved as .DBL which is a Daz 3D Model (I have just downloaded Daz and am going to try to convert them into a 3DS Max usable format)..

Another idea I had for it was that it could be used in GTA SoL's SA version so that we could create our own character based on how we wanted them to look instead of being stuck with CJ's Default Player Model....

sorry for the late reply guys... School is also kicking my ass...

I like Tommy for VC as that is everyone favourite, we could age him.

Now maybe a woman character for SA would be cool.

I like Tommy, however in this, I don't think he would be good. Its for the simple reason that Tommy is a 3D era character and this is HD era. So I'd say an HD era character could be good.

@Ss4gogeta0 I played it on the PS2 many years ago, I remember alot more buildings but yes there is alot of land and I am interested in how they laid it out, I might improve upon this and make it the size we want to expand the map.

@Prince Gumball That screen shot isn't even close to what I remember. it's weird (Looks like Crazy Taxi). Could you post screens to the first mission at the start.

@nkjellman if your going to keep on making this statements about what I should be doing and what I shouldn't be doing. Get it right.

I have been playing Vice City in the HD resolution since 2003 m8, mostly in 1200x1028 or 1400x900 later on. and yes both games are in 3D unless your thinking GTA1 and GTA2 era which are top down games.

Rage and RW are 3D rendered, the only different is you can do more with Rage when you can with the VC engine, however I am starting to think the SA Engine can do more as I have been testing ideas on this engine too. I might run the same map on SA with fastman92's limits and Rage.

How about saying; we don't want to get RW and Rage characters mixed up. :D

Doesn't SA use RenderWare? I have always thought that it did but used a more advanced build.

Sorry about that. Traditionally after GTA 4 came out, they called it the III era, and the IV era. But after GTA V was announced, people called it the HD era. I wouldn't say RW era as LCS and VCS were not RW. Some people say PS2 era, or SD era. When that is said, it isn't meaning anything technical.

I just made the statement because if you want to be accurate to the series, it wouldn't be a great idea to use Tommy because in the HD era, Claude, Tommy, Carl, Tony, and Vic don't exist.

If you want to use an HD era character, here are a few that I think could be good.

-Niko Bellic

-Packie McReary

-Johnny Klebbits

-Luis Lopez

-Michael DeSanta

-Franklin Clinton

-Trevor Phillips

Personally, I feel that Packie McReary would be a good one to use. If I could pick any HD era character to play as that isn't a protagonist, it would probably be him.

I like Niko Bellic. We could bring him back from the dead as many people might say, but as its a reboot for SOL. I could get away with it. it would be ignoring the story line of GTAIV.

If you want a female character, you could use Misty from GTA Online too. I wouldn't put both Claude and Misty , though. Say, does anyone know where the Online models are in V?

How bout adding claude from GTA Online?

I forgot about that. I guess since Claude and Misty are in GTA Online, its quite possible for those characters to exist in the HD universe. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use Claude. Part of me wants to play as Lamar, but since this mod is supposed to have multiple locations, I don't see that working as Lamar seems to only deal with Chainley Hills area in Los Santos.

Personally, I would say that you could not bother with picking a character. In the future, if this is brought to V, it could be like a modified GTA Online. You would just play as your GTA Online character (that is if you find a way to get GTA Online characters off of the servers, as you would want the SOL Infusions server to be separate from the Rockstar servers). If you are not creating any objectives in the mod, only free roam, I say why not do it for Online. It would be fun to get to mess about the map with friends. If its built onto of GTA Online, those who want to play alone can play in an invite only session. It would practically be the same as playing SP.

I just bought a PS4 and The Crew because I was planning on driving around the cities in the game and recording them so that you can get an idea of some cities you could map out for SOL...

I found a tool that can export models from The Crew. Whether or not it can export buildings is unknown to me.

http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11095

It would come in handy for exporting Chicago buildings. It could also help because the game has San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Miami, if you plan on recreating Las Venturas, San Fierro, or Vice City. However, for creating an HD era version of a city done in the past in GTA, I'd wait. I say it would be a good idea to put them last on the to do list. There is a chance that Rockstar will recreate that city in future GTA's, and you probably would want to use their city. If you did VC, then GTA 6 comes out and is set in VC, you probably will want to use theirs, and the work would of gone to waste. You could use the old Renderware ones as a placeholder, and maybe replace buildings with high quality ones from The Crew, or use the city from The Crew directly, but I wouldn't go to far out of your way remodeling them.

Edit: Another option for place holder cities for Vice City would be the Driv3r map, and San Fierro would be the Driver SF map if you don't want to use the old GTA cities.

Too bad converting stuff from the game isn't allowed. If it can convert maps, then inspiration could be drawn from the maps better?

I'm not sure about that. I think the forum administrators don't want people converting maps directly. I don't think they care if you use any models or textures from other games. The reason why is the fact that in recent years, I've seen mods released on here that use models from non Rockstar games, and they even say what game the models are from.

The Crew may not have street by street maps, but the landmarks are spot on. Little details on them are there. They did change the names around, but they are accurate. For example, Navy Pier. It is one of the bigger land marks that you can drive on. It is practically a 1:1 scale model of Navy Pier. In LA, Santa Monica Pier is pretty accurate to its real life counterpart. In GTA V, the Del Perro Pier is also pretty accurate to Santa Monica Pier in real life. Long story short, the pier looks very identical when it is compared between The Crew, GTA V, and real life.

Comparison: (These were the closest images I could find.)

Evidently, conversions from anything before 2005 are fine, anything after can consist only of props, which buildings are not.

What if you were to convert from The Crew Beta? That was technically free and the content isn't considered to be from the final game. On the other hand, I could of swore I saw things from 2005 and after. For one, VCS is 2006.

Also if anything were to be converted from The Crew, there are fences around many things that prevent you from going to certain parts of the map. Especially in cities. Removing those would change the model. I thought you could do it if you altered the model. But you would think that they wouldn't care about buildings, as long as they are being used on a map that is different from the original.

Say for example, you use Driver 2's Chicago for Midway, Driver 3's Miami for VC, SA's San Fierro for SF, SA's Las Venturas for LV, along with GTA IV's map and GTA V's map. Then for Midway, VC, SF, and LV, you replace landmarks with the corresponding higher quality ones from The Crew. Then you remodel stuff that isn't HD. You could also alter the maps as well. On Driver 2's map, I think there are a lot of areas where streets could be added in. For example, if you look along the river on the map, there are a lot of bridges that don't have roads beyond them.

The reason why I recommend that X-Seti should use stuff from other games would include:

1. Making all of this is a lot of work for one person. However, I don't see him quitting anytime soon. This is probably the only mod that I know of that is around today, and was around back when I first started modding GTA, and was around before that as well.

2. The Crew has very good, detailed, and accurate models (with the exception of names being changed). If they are used, he will be able to focus his effort onto another part of the map which would need work. That is, remodeling things that aren't in The Crew, but are in Driver. For example, I think both Watch Dogs, and The Crew don't have the Daily Center, where as Driver 2's map does. He could also put work into the country side between the cities. Also, in the country side, he could have land marks from The Crew, like Mt Rushmore, Kennedy Space Center, etc...

3. If X-Seti didn't use anything from The Crew, he would model the same land mark. He would have took time to make the same exact building, when he could of been working on another part of the map. This means that X-Seti would have more time to make a more detailed, and possibly larger map. It also means that he would progress in creating the map faster. It also means that he would have more time to focus on optimizing the map as well.

Anyways, the rules on here have gotten more flexible. I remember my EFLC Map Updates in GTA IV mod got shut down. Now, we got mods converting GTA IV's map to SA, GTA V's map to IV and SA, etc... (But PS: I sure hope that The Crew's map on GTA V will happen. I don't care what anyone says, because that would be practically an open world orgasm on a hard drive, and if it were to be put on a custom MP server with like a 100+ players, it would probably be one of the most fun multiplyer experiences ever.)
