'Special' cars in garage?

I've bought one of the four-car garages for both Michael and now Franklin, but am somewhat confused. On entering, I'm given an option to 'choose a special car to use' - I then get a choice of only two (even if I have four cars in the garage). If I choose one of the cars offered, it skips to the animation of me driving it out of the garage.

 

What are these 'special' cars, and how do they differ from the ones I've bought / modded and put in the garage myself?

Special cars are just that, they are special and are unlocked through means other than stealing or buying one off the internet. This includes cars that are unlocked as rewards for doing certain things (like the Stock Car Racing vehicles) or the pre-order bonus vehicles. They are different from the cars you park in the garage yourself and they will always be available in the list, even if you blow them up.

It's also worth noting DLC cars were included in this list for the previous generation of consoles, as they didn't spawn in traffic - however there's been no such cars for the enhanced version as of yet.

 

If future DLC's cars don't spawn in traffic, they should appear under Special Cars as well.
