Crossed
My 19 year old sister put it best; "No Facebook is terrible it creates a "comparison aspect" view of life which is terrible. Success and failure are only an illusion you decide what success is and what failure is. Success to one person might be money and cars but success to another might be living without anything in the wild to discover yourself. Facebook makes it seem like one persons life is so much better than someone else's and it's simply untrue and ridiculous." I've left it all. I use gtaforums an party chat on psn to keep in touch with my true friends. Facebook is soulless an is destroying society. Doc Rikowski
Facebook is just a tool. It's not Facebook that creates a "comparison aspect", it's people that use it to compare themselves to others who do that. As with all things created by humans it's the use you make of it that can be good or bad. I agree that a lot of people are way too much sucked into it but whose fault is this? The other day I saw a group of 3 "young persons" (in their 20s) sitting at a café table watching at their smart phones, no conversation whatsoever. First time I saw such thing. But were they forced by their phones to do so? By society? By technology? We as humans make choices every day. You can choose to use Facebook to compare your life with the one of your coworker or simply to keep in touch with people you know that live abroad and exchange with them thoughts, news, pictures, funny stuff. As long as you do this moderately (like 30m x day), there's absolutely no harm in Facebook. I understand that for those of you born in the Facebook era it can be difficult to adjust to social media peer pressure, maybe for those like me that were born and were young before internet, it's easier to not get sucked into new technologies since we have experienced non technological socialising for most of our lives, but then again it can happen to anyone. The important thing to do is to establish priorities in your life and realize that a technology can't be inherently bad. Melech
Wow! Your sister is an intelligent girl. She's 100% right. I have a Facebook profile because I am travelling abroad every year, and I have studied abroad, too. So I have friends around the world, and Facebook is the best way to be in touch with them. But I don't really use it. I just use the private chat to talk with friends. I rarely post a picture or write on my wall. Oh, and I also comment on some media pages. If I didn't have friends around the world, then I would not have a Facebook profile. It's useless and superficial. A great friend of mine once made a fake Facebook profile posing as a very hot girl. He trolled chavs ("white trash" in US English) from our high school and other people he disliked.

Happened to me when i went on a vacation with them for the first time in ten years. I could have broken down and cried right there in that greek beach bar, that's how f*cking miserable this made me feel. RavingWithJesus
Facebook has been MySpace status for awhile imo...haven't used it in a long time, only use it to remember friends' birthdays now. lol Deleted my Twitter in 2007 or something, it was just stupid. Occasionally use Instagram though, but only because I'm into photography. If I want to talk to friends, I'll call or text them. Strange Town
At first I used to think like that too, and feel bad that I used to have like only 40 friends. Fortunately now I don't give a damn anymore, and I use Facebook for groups and pages. If I see that I added an attention whore as a friend, I won't waste a second in deleting that asshole. Cellphones, much like social medias, are now vital organs of our society. Without the attention people harvest from it, people die. They need 5000 friends and hundreds of thousands of followers so they can hear their stupid opinion which rarely reflect what they really think in order to get the likes. The smart industry doesn't waste time to adapt and start selling selfie sticks to help those who has a constant need of attention. sebcreed

Especially since it was the day of our arrival, the very first drink of the vacation. Mum got the wifi key even before ordering said drink. f*cking modern times, man... I guess that must have sucked. Never happened to me with people I know. I don't even have a smart phone, just 16€ Samsung with no bluetooth. But then again, it's how people use things, not what they can be used for. @ Pali: you just said it's the best way to keep in touch with friends around the world but then you say it's useless. Kinda contradictory. The way you use Facebook can be "useless" and superficial but the technology is not. It all depends on you and on the people you choose to interact with in your friend list. For example for me it is also a good way to be up to date with what happens in my profession in the market I work in. Recently I found a job via Facebook thanks to a post from a person I had in my list and I found a good amount of freelance gigs through it. LinkedIn now is moving towards a more social direction but Facebook is still the primary mean to contact with people in the same line of work. Another example: a few weeks ago I found out a very good teacher of mine was on Facebook. He posts very enlightening thoughts about news and politics on a daily basis. For me it's a pleasure to read them. And I could tell you many more examples of good use of Facebook.

If you don't like people posting statuses, if you don't like pictures of people dinner then don't look at your wall. It's made me more social than I would have been before. If your out and you ask for someone's number that's f*cking weird, if you ask for their Facebook then it's like forward. I met my friendship group after meeting someone out and asking for their Facebook then linking up with them and going out with them another time. A guy asking for another guys number while barely knowing them is never cool. People just like to criticism what is new and popular, those people are lame. So Facebook is mint end of story ;o Edited February 21, 2015 by Zook
