I'm pretty sure that if he dies you fail the mission so the bonus is that you get to continue the mission. I'm pretty sure I have never done this mission with him dying so I don't even know if he can die.

He dies all the time. What do you expect when he's using a pistol and not using cover. I usually drive off without him before I have to go blow up the cars.

I leave him at Gerald's apartment all the time and go off to do the second part of the mission. Stanley is a bitch.

I finally completed it with Stanley surviving - no bonus. And you can complete if he gets killed in either part of the mission.
