Support Helicopter: Totally Useless?

The Merryweather support helicopter just seems to fly around in circles otherwise doing nothing. No shooting at other players ect. What is it goof for? Absolutely nothing?

Yeeeeah it was never much good to begin with but now in these times of widespread surface-to-air missile proliferation they are an excellent way to waste your money and several brave men's lives.

No.

Nope. The lester ones are all useful, although the off radar ability is not what it once was.

Merryweather heli pick up is pretty handy too.

since gtao launch i have faces a total of 3 people that have deployed "merryweather support heli" against me...

 

i was killed once by it.

That's because they don't shoot at other players they are there to help you combat NPC in missions or survivals not other players.

 

I use it in some missions when i am last one alive and it can be difficult to complete by myself and also on wave 10 of survival when i am last one alive and there are a lot of NPC around.

Many of them are very good and useful.

I use Lamar's mugger to get out of pinned down positions. Sometime Merryweather mercenaries when I would rather spend the money than let them get a kill. A support helicopter would work in theory but never seems to do anything of use.

Come to think of it, Merryweather's Ammo drop and Boat pickup have been useful once or twice as well, in those rare situations where they're applicable. Really their only crumby services are the Chopper backup and Airstrike.

the only real time i ever used them was in my early noob days while i was playing titan of a job, merryweather vs merryweather lol!!

I use it occasionally when everyone else dies during a hard mode mission, it's not extremely effective though...

I have feeling that will be used as a Merryweather support option.

 

As for you question TC, no the support chopper is not totally useless. On missions it provides a good distraction if you are desperate enough to not die and start over.

They wont kill anyone but it'll give you a few moments to save your own ass or get the jump on someone. People can't wait to use the homing launcher. So when they're occupied with that waste em.

I use it for chemical extraction of I'm playing that mission by myself, there's no way to hack the door before the troops reach and turns my character into Swiss cheese, the chopper fights and distracts them for enough time to me to hack the door and get the van.

They are a great help if you're alone in a survival too.

Lester' abilities, yeah, sure. I think they are all useful, except the helicopter and car's location. I mean.. I don't understand them. Yeah, pick this chopper but bring it back before 5PM or else... Man, I'm gonna go pick some random choppers without having to feel bothered by random cops flying all over me because I forgot to bring them back their wasted chopper. Sorry, I don't see the point.

 

Lamar's only ability is pretty fun. I love to send a mugger after some noisy-player and it's always a lot of fun to hear them cuss after you after they got robbed, especially when they're in a tank. It's also pretty cool when you are engaged in a shootout against a player and you see the mugger slowly going after him. Useful, yes, absolutely.

 

Merryweather is a lot of promises with not satisfying results or almost.

 

Airstrike ? Totally useless. I have never been killed by an airstrike nor have I ever killed anybody with this option. Never. It is absolutely useless on plain terrain, mountain terrain or whatever. It seems to be somewhat of a threat against a player sniping other players from a high tower but if the player is not stupid, he'll run around and won't be killed. To be useful, we should be able to mark the target with a sniper gun. Otherwise, fail.

 

Helicopter support ? Yeah, OK, promising but they always come too late. Worse, when you're in your car, they seem unable to catch up with you. They're not totally useless but they're not as bad-ass as NPC choppers you'll encounter in missions. So, no, for a diversion, it's too expensive for what it is.

 

Helicopter pickup ? It's a f*cking joke. They're mercenary right ? As I've said before on this forum, the helicopter pilot seems to only be able to land on a perfectly flat terrain and even at that, it's gonna take him so much time that many time, you'll be killed before he landed and disappear when you come back. How many times have I waited more than two minutes before he finally landed ? Or even before you finally hear him going down. Anyway, when you need him, you're usually in the mountains. Good luck with that. You'll have more luck going back to the civilization by jumping down the mountain. Anyway, his flying skills are so low that it's better to kill him once he's on land.

 

No, the only useful options with Merryweather are the boat pickup (because, yeah, they won't tell you they can't accede to your location and also, let's be honest, when you need it, you're that far from the shore that it won't bother you to wait a little bit) and the mercenaries. Mercenaries are alright but I hate, hate, hate when they call me saying they finally got the target when it was me who killed the said target !!! Give me back my money!

 

PS. I'm referring to free roam. It is true that helicopter support is useful during survivals (which I stopped doing because they don't bring enough $$$ versus my spending and the time it takes to complete them). But-but-but helicopter support will only be useful if you're the last man standing (the same would apply to a mission) because otherwise stupid co-players will shoot at it until it explodes), because they can't tell the difference between a red-marked chopper and a black-marked chopper on the mini-GPS-map.

Yeah, its not that it isn't effective in helping you kill NPCs, or at least distracting them so you can move and shoot, but it ends up taking such a big chunk out of your payout that it really isn't worth it.

Back in the day, I gave it a try cause I thought it would help me on missions here I have to deliver a van/truck, and all my teammates died.

 

NOT ONLY did they follow me without shooting or killing the dudes chasing, me but I didn't even get a refund after I died and failed the mission....

No need. If your doing it solo just use the bob to pick up the crate and then drop it again straight away. Land the bob on the cove again and wait. Granted it will seem like an age for the chopper to appear. But when it does just use a lock on rocket to take it out.

 

Usually I spend abit longer at the start to go collect my buzzard from Trevs airfield. Then just the same as above instead of waiting just jump into my buzzard and hunt down the chopper before returning to the cove, collect the bob and crate and fly leisurely to the drop off point.
