CRAZYGTASAINT
If there is anything that I love about GTA, it is definitely the subtle easter eggs that refer to dirty jokes, real-world culture or even a small callback to thier previous games. However, I feel that with GTAV, they are more or less rammed down your throat. For example, the appearances from Packie and Johnny were far from needed and the references to Niko are just too...in your face. I miss the times where you would cherish the slightest reference to any other part of the GTA universe. Perfect examples would be the GTA artwork carefully hidden in the graffiti of Dukes from GTAIV or the computers that hold screenshots of GTA1 and 2 in GTA3. Finding these would cause memories to flood back from when you used to play that particular game and it would give the series a sense of deep connection without actually stating it. Although it is nice to see that rockstar never forget about their glorious past, it isn't good to see it cheapened once their story is resolved. Now, there are many different opinions that could be expressed on this subject. So feel free to agree with me or point out where I could be wrong. American Viking
The in-game presence of Packie and Johnny are just cameos, not Easter eggs. The reference to Niko is sort of an Easter egg, but I always think of Easter eggs as something hidden from the player the we have to actively search for. That said, I do love the Easter eggs though. The point I am trying to make is that rockstar previously used easter eggs to "give the series a deep connection without actually stating it". Now they just use their assets as a cheap thrill. DaWiesel
OP obviously never played past GTA's. VC had appearances of Phil Cassidy and Donald Love, SA had Ken Rosenberg, Dwaine and Jethro, Salvatore Leone, Kent Paul, Catalina, Maria Latore, hell even Claude. Weren't those rammed down your throat? Also Ken has a conversation with CJ about a guy he worked with which is a clear reference to Tommy Vercetti. So you're wrong, they used their assets as a "cheap thrill" since the 3D era. Real easter eggs like Tony from Flash FM on a billboard or the graffiti in Chamberlain Hills reading "Welcome back, we missed you last time" are still in the game. You are just a bit off from getting what I am trying to say, There is a difference between using previous characters to create a good, integrated story and just using them because "Why not?" Zondar
As Mr. Alpha says, Johnny and Packie were not Easter Eggs. V did have subtle Easter eggs for previous characters. Niko's liveinvader page and some of the old Grove St gang in a blink and you'll miss them appearance in Hood Safari. V also had imo the best ever GTA Easter egg in the infinty 8 killer. That was far from rammed down your throat and yet was incredibly deep and complex.

Lethal Vaccine
Nothing is more subtle than the Easter Egg, Easter Egg in VC. This is the only Easter Egg I know in any GTA Game, the TRUE EASTER EGG! Nothing is more subtle than the Easter Egg, Easter Egg in VC. Not to forget; From VCS. Wow....Never saw that one in VCS. In fact, I never went looking for any of these in any Game, tbh. The only one I know very fondly is the actual Easter Egg in VC, like SoL has stated above. KarimNTerr
I love Easter Eggs in the GTA series! Some of my favourite ones are as follows: GTAIII & GTA: Liberty City Stories: The "You werent supposed to be able to get here you know" sign in GTAIII, which became "Hello again! :D" in GTA: Liberty City Stories PSP and "You just can't get enough of this alley, can you? :D" in GTA: Liberty City Stories PS2. GTA: Vice City & GTA: Vice City Stories: The literal Easter Egg, and the same Easter Egg still in construction, respectively. GTA: San Andreas: Too many to mention, but I really liked the Half-Life reference in the Area 69. In fact, in one of the labs you can find a crowbar very similar to the iconic one held by Gordon Freeman in the Half-Life series. Also, the Area 69 itself is pretty similar to Black Mesa, the setting of the first game, and its episodes. GTA: Vice City Stories PSP & GTA: Vice City Stories PS2: In the PSP version of the game, near the Hyman Memorial Stadium, there's a sign that says: "You are standing on USJ 005a, a fine new addition to our great city that isn't contrived at all. Have you found the 10 Easter Eggs? Rockstar Leeds would like to thank you for playing the game and letting us have a rockin' Christmas party", while in the PS2 version - which has been released after the PSP one - the same sign says: "You are standing on USJ 005a, a fine new addition to our great city that we're all grown to love. Have you found the 11 Easter Eggs? Rockstar Leeds would like to thank you for playing the game, and by the way, the Christmas party was great". I like when the developers thank the fanbase for playing the game. GTAIV: The infamous graffito which depicts the name of all the 3D-era protagonists with a phrase of condolences next to them. The GTA series: The name of missions that refer to movies, TV shows, songs and other video games, or simply references throughout the game worlds. They actually introduced me to a lot of movies, TV shows, et cetera. GrandTheftWiki has a list of almost all the film references here. Not sure if consider it subtly, or not, but this is one of my favourite Easter Eggs as I love The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Somewhere in Strawberry, there is a graffiti depicting a one-eyed green alien with the phrase "Don't Panic" written next to it: This is a reference to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" comedy science fiction series created by Douglas Adams. Here's the original green alien: I think GTAV has the best Easter Eggs of the series, though. This one is brilliant: Edited February 22, 2015 by toxluv Lethal Vaccine and Zondar
