Files in the Japanese version of GTA Vice City

Looking gta3.img Japanese PS2 version, found in its files that are not in English PC and PS2 versions. And in the Japanese PC version, there are such files? In an ordinary PC version 6043 files.

very interesting stuff here! a lot of things in your download are actually in the PC version already, but I did find some gold:

facial comparison between leftover tommy and final tommy, beta is right. a bit bruce campbell-esque :p. seems to have been in the process of model-merging, as its original head was hacked off and replaced with a "new" head, which in itself is old

another facial comparison! left is buddy.dff from the pc version (VERY old), middle from the ps2 japanese version (interestingly high poly but is rigged as a ped model), right is his final cutscene face

ahhhh, thought so! I know there's a ton of weapon models from III in vice's ps2 files so it's no surprise that this is another one of them :p

 

jesus that's quite a collection you put together OP, I'll report back if I find anything

GTA III:

  • in the exchange, there's a reverb effect and an extended line where catalina says, "Throw over the cash, and you can have this overused puta back!" before seeing the briefcase which got cut
  • the deaddodo flight path seems to be vastly different in EU 1.40 as opposed to 1.60, there's a lot more lines in the flight data and at times it would go much lower than it does in later versions
  • both import/export garages are properly localized in the japanese version
  • water data was updated for the japanese ps2 release and is lifted from the pc version, it was much simpler in the original release

Vice City:

  • japanese version uses the original design for the vercetti gang (which is leftover on pc)
  • japanese version has the spotlight just saying "CANDY SUXXX" in g-spotlight

  • japanese version replaces all of the pictures in diaz's mansion (including the candy suxxx poster) with pictures of kittens and flowers :D

Cute! Waiting for more. Heck the Vercettis in GTA VC on the PC version have the same internal names as the final ones. I wonder why that is.

Interestingly enough, in SA, the shirt textures that have been extracted are more detailed and different in some ways as opposed to their other region versions.

*EDIT: These just seem to be left over shirts, not different textures for shirtablue, and the other comparisons.

Here we go on a new newly found assets quest!

 

Those japanese ones look so much nicer and... fitting for the time period, if that's the right wording. Any more, Kalvin? Maybe go check what they did to the gimp suit :D

 

EDIT: Are those from PC or PS2 Japan? I can get one of those to give it a playthrough to find any differences.

There are some interesting changes in the main.scm.

  • There are huge sections of extra code for weapon and hardware stores that make use of button 17 (circle) and opcode 059C, which is conditional with 0 parameters and does not match the opcode on the PC version. Does the Japanese version use different controls to buy weapons? I'm guessing this opcode checks if the game is a Japanese.
  • Duration of Pole Position mission complete cutscene slightly longer.
  • Duration of message to complete Biker missions before Love Fist missions slightly longer.
  • You can no longer shoot the limo driver in Recruitment Drive and Martha's Mug Shot. Although it doesn't seem to make a difference in Recruitment Drive.
  • Dildo Dodo's cutscene and G-spotlight's cutscene are cut short.
  • Missing and changed Cuban and Haitian content in the Cuban and Haitian missions.
  • The Top Fun van in Bombs Away! no longer remains stuck when the mission is completed.

Full list of differences in the GTA:VC Japanese/Green Pepper mission script (compared to the steam/regular version):

(The Japanese and Green Pepper mission scripts are identical)


The message 'Come back when you have finished the Biker gang missions.' is shown for 4 seconds instead of 1

You can buy weapons in ammu/hardware with shoot in addition to sprint

The Infernus spawn inside the mall is disabled during All Hands On Deck!

The tutorial messages how to accelerate and how to brake during Demolition Man is now different when using a controller

The driver of Candy's car in Recruitment Drive can no longer be shot while in the car

The intro cutscene in Dildo Dodo now has two silly untriggerable debug things that can skip part of it instead of one.

The limo driver and Candy can no longer be shot while in the car. In addition, the driver no longer responds to threats and the limo is fireproof.

The intro cutscene in G-spotlight now has two silly untriggerable debug things that can skip part of it instead of one.

During Cannon Fodder, the player now leaves the taxi slightly before the Cubans, instead of right after.

The message and audio 'Stinking nest of Haitians, we gonna kill 'em all!' removed during Cannon Fodder.

The dialogue during Trojan Voodoo has been changed to no longer insult Haitians.

The Voodoo's with Cubans in Trojan Voodoo are now fireproof, and the Cubans no longer respond to threats.

The Topfun van is set to not be locked in position at the end of Bombs Away!

The message detailing the enemies are Cubans during Dirty Lickin's has been removed.

Bugfix in Love Juice regarding trying to pick up mercedes in a pizzaboy/baggage/a vehicle where the passenger seat isnt empty.

The player is now removed from any vehicle and the vehicle despawned after the intro cutscene in Publicity Tour if he was in one.

The message explaining how to turn on sirens is now different for every control scheme but standard keyboard.

Sunshine Autos races menu can now be cancelled with sprint in addition to enter vehicle (???)

Sunshine Autos races can now be started with shoot in addition to sprint.

The tutorial message on how to make deals in Cherry Poppers is now different depending on what type of controls are in use.

The tutorial message on how to cancel Pizza Delivery during the mission is now different depending on what type of controls are in use.

The control scheme for Pizza Delivery is now if a controller is used.


Note: While this list has all the differences in the mission script, differences in other files are not accounted for.



Not by me, but worth posting here.


JP also doesn't crash when duping Distribution, that's the most important difference.

Japanese seem to love swapping Circle and Cross actions, with one of the only exceptions being Gran Turismo games. Quite likely the menu is navigated by Circle and Triangle (or Circle and Square? III PC oddly expects Square as going back in menu).

Because they contain a sex scene. The Japs love cutting out sex scenes.
