Muscle Elimination Game

Well, they were called pony cars because they were smaller and lighter than the big boy muscle cars being built at the time. Fast forward 40 years and they've grown in size and weight, to be some of the largest and heaviest cars those companies now build. They definitely don't seem like little ponies anymore. More like Clydesdales. lol

It's more than you think, long hood short deck with an open grill, also had to be affordable.

I don't think body shape played any big role in it. The Mustang set the stage and everyone else followed suit, copying Ford's formula. As far as affordability goes, some Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers with the biggest engine options and all the bells and whistles were not very cheap. They were often more expensive than their muscle car big brothers.

But without larger, heavier, and more powerful cars to compare themselves with, the term 'pony car' quickly lost most of it's meaning imo. Especially when they themselves grew in size, weight, and power to fill the gaps left by the recently deceased muscle cars.

But neither muscle car nor pony car was an official designation, so it's all open to interpretation.

Body shape plays a huge role in what a pony car was. Yes the original Mustang was the first pony car and everyone followed these standards. And affordability played the biggest role is why they were considered pony cars. Just because some of these cars had options and became more expensive doesn't mean they weren't pony cars. Take the Corvette as an example, it wasn't a muscle car because it was expensive, it was a sports car. Like I said this can be debated all day but what I posted is all facts on what a pony car is/was.

Here is the thing, the term Pony Car was coined by an automotive journalist, because it sounded catchy on paper. It was used to describe the Mustang, so anything similar to a Mustang was also called a pony car. But it was not an official designation. There are no rules, no facts, just opinions.

I was looking at Ford's own website, they call the Mustang a Pony car. So there's that.

However, the Dominator is a muscle car. It just has the styling of a Mustang or Shelby.

A pony is a type of horse, and is the only reason it was coined for thr Mustang. Just to add.

If body shape plays a huge role in what makes a muscle car, then what about my Mach 1? It's much larger than any other Mustang, as big or bigger than any Chevelle or Nova or Charger. It was also very expensive, even with base options, compared to other cars of the era. Is it still lumped in with Pony Cars even though it shares no qualities with the definition? Just because they happened to call it a horse?

They all had long hoods/short decks.

I'm not arguing, just thought I'd make ya think.

Edit: I know we have had this disscussion before lol. We have different views and thats cool.

Muscle Cars were just small/medium models with the engines from the large models shoved in for performance- hence "muscle". A few visual enhancements and the recipe for the American version of a European "sports car" was born.

I love early Mustangs, I dislike the Dominator because it resembles the later, fatter, heavier Mach 1 rather than the purer original. It's not nice to "Drive". I also voted for and love the Stanier in the Sedan shootout, not because I'm a hipster but because it's one of the best cars in the game to drive.
