press the right trigger to go forward. If you press it right when it says go you even get a boost.
The left trigger slows you down. This is good for turning

Brake before corners, also releasing the throttle on longer curves, when you feel like you are going off road instead of braking is also good. Use the boost at the start and then slipstream.

Use your brakes, learn your car, learn the track.

If it's not non contact, expect to be rammed the whole race, even if you're not in first. Try to anticipate the ramming by looking behind you and then braking at the right moment.

CrysisAverted

If in front, on the first turn take it as quick and clean as you can to avoid the massive collisions about to happen, don't slow down less someone use you as a cushion they can bounce off of.

alternatively, slam the brakes and pull to the side, while everyone eats sh*t, just drive through the wreckage.

Always brake in a straight line, then turn in to a corner.

Don't stab at the accelerator, only go full power coming out of corner when you know you can keep it on.

Shorten the track: so if going into a right hand corner, go out to the left then sweep in, hitting the apex before powering out.

Of course, this can only happen if you have a clear track and aren't being rammed.

if everyone else has green, pink or chromed cars. take it easy in the start, there Will be a massive crash in 10-20 seconds, when that happens. pass everyone and win.

Here's a money tip (glitch?) I figured out while solo racing. Wait until 8 minutes have passed before crossing the finish line to get the maximum amount of money of over $8000 per race. Any more time doesn't work for some reason... Just watch this get fixed now. -_- :p

Play GTA IV for a more better racing experience instead of the noob friendly "catchup", noob friendly power-ups in GTA Races (Rockets and Boosts) and horribly made player created races that plague GTA Online. I report player created matches that feature horribly misplaced jumps, checkpoints, and other stuff that the youngsters make.

GTA IV Races had none of that crap. Plus, more skilled drivers played compared to GTA Online.

Did I mention "motorcycle" races in GTA Online? Holy crap are the bike physics bad. If you clip something with THE LIGHTEST TOUCH you'll still fall off and die. Tragic

I love racing and always leave catch up on. Even though I am usually in the lead. This isn't gran turismo, its GTA catch up makes it more fun. Avoid the ram and ram back. Git gud. BTW I have roughly 500 wins 1000 losses. So not tooting my own horn.

Don't play with catchup if you actually want a fair chance at winning.

Also you don't need to floor it at all times.

If you just want upgrades, just buy a Sadler and run utility races. It should unlock all upgrades for all classes.

Technically, your wins will be legit since your opponents weren't planning on letting you win.

Take it steady, if you don't make silly mistakes by pushing to hard then you will pick up places. Its likely that others will make some sort of error so if you keep it tidy you'll find yourself getting ahead of these guys. You don't have to be the fastest on the track to win the race, consistency more often than not prevails.

Another thing is when going around corners its all about exit speed so use the slow in, fast out rule to get your corner exits nailed.

Lastly dont waste your time ramming people off the track, more often than not it'll end up costing you time rather than gaining you an advantage. Concentrate on your own race and learn to avoid getting into silly incidents with people who dont know/lack the interlect to drive properly trying to smash you off!

I'm gonna assume you're racing with randoms here. If host, change it to non-contact. That way driver skill and consistency is the main factor in winning instead of who's the best wrecker, or who can evade to most PIT attempts.

If not host, and catchup and slipstream are on, then do what Crysis said and either take turn 1 as quickly as possible, or just brake and let everyone crash and work your way through the wreckage. I recommend the second tactic, as if you're in the front end of the pack leading in, you're more likely to get hit by people divebombing into the turn from slipstream. After that, just check R3 often so you can tell if someone coming up behind you so you can prepare for a PIT or divebomb attempt. If you find yourself in a standard race for Criminal Records, Down the Drain, or any other track than doesn't have many turns; just leave. It's gonna be a wreckfest.

Try to race clean. If you drive trying to take down the driver in front, there's a high chance you'll end up missing a turn or a checkpoint due to the fact you're paying more attention to the other driver than the track itself. Hell, you may even miss the other guy completely and go flying off the track with nobody to blame but yourself.

If traffic is on, always assume traffic will turn and hit you. Therefore, leave as much room as you can between yourself and the npc drivers. Expect them to turn left from the far right lane, and vice versa, as well as fly out from a side street at 200mph.

However, the biggest factor in winning races, no matter what the settings, is simply knowing the tracks, and knowing the lines. Having a custom Zentorno is useless if you crash every turn due to lack of track knowledge. Meanwhile, the guy in the stock bullet who knows the track will be running away with the win.

Go to freeroam and just drive around. Take your time, push yourself but not too much. Like others said only brake while coming to a turn ( not while in a turn ) and hit the gas while in a turn. You don't really want to hit the brakes while the tires are turned, you'll just go off into the wall etc. Hitting the gas while in a turn will help pull you thu it. Master this and you'll be good to go. It's all about timing when to hit the gas and when not to.

Slip stream into first place with around 5 checkpoints to go. Any earlier and you will be slip streamed back to 2nd place.

I win all the time in my Hot Pink Turismo R though :(

Some tips?

Host your own lobbies and set them with Custom Rides off, this creates an even playing field for all participants including, most importantly, yourself. Pick a track you're good at/comfortable with/have practiced on and turn off catch-up (which is dumbass rubber-banding for noobs). Also do a race with only a couple of people maximum. The less people the higher chance you have a % of winning the race and padding your 'W' stats.

If you put traffic on you can really gain a huge lead if you know the track and car well and are playing with "n00bs."

Learn how to do a turbo start, this is an important ability as this will help you out in front of the pack as there are a surprising amount of people who don't know how to do this. Watch for people drafting (slipstream) off of you (if you have it on) they will blow by you. Having traffic turned on helps to mitigate this. Jumping out in front can be important because usually within the first couple of corners in a contact race there is always a few people who spin out or will ram you and this will make winning a LOT more difficult from here on out. If you can get out in front and have the pack take most of each other out and with catch-up off it's a free win.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Unless you're against Hares who don't fall asleep at the side of the road. Then you're f*cked.

Pick a track and race solo traffic on and off to get a feel for the bends etc.

If host:

Non-Contact

Custom off

Slipstream off

Catchup off

Traffic on
