Hey everybody!

So first of all, a confession. I only got back into GTA with the XBL Gold Sale - I played 1-3 & Vice City (RDR and LA Noire if that counts), and was immediately fascinated with the Online mode. So yeah, I'm an old idiot who totally lost the plot.

I noticed that a lot of people are playing very similar characters, given the incredible customization possibilities of your character and your car. After even getting several messages -some more, some less friendly- advising me to do this or that, I began to think there may be something seriously wrong with me. I am not wearing sunglasses & a golden Kalashnikov or a spec-ops uniform; I neither drive a brightly colored japanese sports car nor a tank. I don't know what it is, but I just love "understatement" in characters, which in a game with as much possibilities as GTAO is probably going to make you look really weird.

- My character always wears a Fedora and crappy, outdated suits.

The "concept" is some weird cross between "random hard-boiled P.I." and Inspector Columbo. My favourite gun is the classic pistol, since it resembles a .45 Colt 1911, and sometimes a Pump-Action Shotgun if needed.

- The first car I found after finishing the tutorial was a beater version, hard top Declasse Tornado in dull black.

I loved the 50s design. I loved the rust & the dirt. I found it so ridiculously out of place that I made it my first personal vehicle - now having the money to buy whatever I want at any time, it still is. By now, it is armored and has all performance upgrades; effectively I turned it from a useless, rusty piece of sh*t with bullet holes into a very slightly less useless, rusty piece of sh*t with bullet holes. Yes, it has a turbo charger.

- I've grown kind of fond of the run-down shack would-be apartment in Shady Sands. With couple of millions on my virtual bank account, I still live there for some reason.

-Whenever I play coop missions (Naturally I don't fare very well in PVP) with that kit, I am in the upper half of the scores and like to claim I rarely die. Just to say I try to not hold anyone back or compromise the team with my odd definition of vanity.

So anyone else who doing similar things; i.e. deliberately living in less luxury than they can afford? Anyone having some sort of cohesive plan for their online appearance? I am aware that with rank 40-ish, I still have much to learn, but by now, I'm enjoying myself quite much.

I don't know if all that's in tone with what's usually discussed here, so thanks for reading, and thanks for having me here in advance!

-Cheers

Nah, ur not alone. I have two characters. One of which has half a ten car garage filled with rusty vehicles....he even owns the rusty bi-plane as his only mode of air travel. My 2nd character has no rusty cars cause he's not into that. Between the 2 they only own 3 super cars of which 2 (Zentorno & Entity) never see the streets cause they are used only for races. The Vacca is the only Super used for free roam or missions.

You'll mainly see my guys driving old muscle cars, low and slow classics, rat-loaders etc. each of my guys has a mad max style police interceptor and I'll sometimes have them dress the part, but generally my guys wear jeans, chinos, or work pants with skate shoes or sneakers. Very rarely are they suited up unless I'm in a Bonnie and Clyde type of mood.

When it comes to weapons I will use the most high powered available when it's pvp. But on missions I'll use the assault rifle, my gold vintage pistol, and pump or sawed off shotgun and even use the smg's.

There's no wrong way to play my man. It's a sandbox that allows you to use your imagination and play as you see fit and makes you most happy. Boxing in ur play style to fit in with what seems the most popular is most definitely the wrong way to go about things.

You seem to be on the right track. Whatever makes the game the most fun for you is the best answer I can give.

My character is one of them people who think they are above everyone else. He's was raised in a rich family, and this has rubbed off on him. He always wears a fedora and a suit to match, along with this he will always been seen riding in high class/professional looking vehicles (e.g. Alpha, Super Diamond) but he also likes the classics, which he often drives.

I change my characters' fashion anytime and anyhow I want them to be. Be it in formal, casual, army or even beach go-er.

Customization is there to mix&match. So why should I limit it to only one theme?

About vehicles, I choose whatever I like instead of what's the fastest or the most trendy.

Lately my character is channeling his inner Tommy Shelby

not sure what OP thinks is understatement, I'm sure some of the 14 year old's think the Pogo mask and underwear is "understatement"

Starting with GTA IV multiplayer, I just wanted to make my character look as nerdy as possible to create a nice contrast with the deadliness of his actions. So I gave him glasses, red jumper, flicked hair. I've tried to recreate this in GTAO but he looks a little too cool for my liking. He needs proper, thick geek spectacles, not sunglasses. This is all I want R* to add to the game.

I'm thinking of utilising a second character for the first time ever. I want this one not to worry about being killed by other players. Just messing around doing whatever he wants, not being aggressive, not chasing money, just having a crappy apartment.

How do second characters affect the stats of the first character?

Sounds like you have the right idea.

I dress up in suits or team gear if the crew has something going down, as in with heists (when they arrive) we will all be matching with only subtle differences.

Most of the time though I find myself alone and mainly playing late at night at which point I just do whatever I feel like.
Recently this has involved classic bikes and cars, I just love cruising in them and especially with my high rank but low profile it makes for some exciting chases with lower level pretenders who spy the old motor and think I'm gona be either an easy slow moving kill or somehow must be broke at such a high rank and lacking in backup vehicles and weaponry.
(I especially like leading the wanna-be gangstas into the railway system and then jumping my bagger or daemon into a flatbed, great fun)

Clothing wise, I see my character as the story dictates really, broke ass low profile criminal who worked his way up the ladder and now has the freedom of wealth and individuality. Sometimes he looks like a biker, sometimes hes ready for the beach, sometimes he looks like a street gangsta (although a rather camp one) and sometimes its just a shirt, jeans, any old shoes and a smile on his face lol. I have a real addiction to that damn musket too, gets me killed a lot but damn, aim it right and that sucker is down.

I guess my character is a little bit eccentric and has gone from rags to riches.

But yeah, you got it right, you are playing for you and having fun. The game has variety, it would be a shame to just follow the masses. Keep rockin your style, individuals keep this game alive.

It's a video game, not your resume. Why should stats mean f*ckall?

Lately I have been playing my character as if it was me and what I would do in that life. I have compiled a list.

1. Keep a low profile ie. avoid wanted levels and cop shoot outs because that's how you die.

2. Not partaking in senseless free mode wars. See item 1.

3. Do missions for contacts.

4.???????

5. Profit, with well over 10 million in the bank and no one sniffing around.

The normal pistol reminds me more of a Beretta. I usually use the heavy pistol on my main, since that reminds me more of a 1911.

And of course my female character uses a platinum .50 pistol.

I generally drive around in a gigantic truck (pv marshal ftw) with a cowboy hat and wife beater on as pictured in my avatar. That's about as far as my roleplaying goes.

On topic- I usually wear the grey open highlife suit with black shirt and tie with the grey wolf hockey mask. Like a wolf of wallstreet... except sometimes i enjoy a murderous rampage directed at npc suits I find down town. Its a good time. I like spilling their f*cking lattés.

I'm level 96, but I only own the six-car dry dock street garage (no apartment) - it's a great location, always quiet around there, with an ammunation next door and ls customs 30 seconds up the road. And I only have 3 cars. I rarely change clothes (maybe done so twice), and never use explosives unless I really need to in a mission. I use a variety of guns though. I never greif, or really bother anyone either, just mind my own business, nor am I part of any crews - random lobbies all the way! I try to make myself useful in missions with others though.

Misanthrope Z

basically if you're not dressed up as a boring military man or a generic thug, you're an "outcast"

my characters aren't "understatement" characters, as i like to give them funky looking appearances, while still straying away from the crowd of stupid war veteran wannabes

character i use the most

my first character. never use him anymore unless i'm selling a car

The theme of the game is get rich quick or die trying. So you see the candy coloured Zentorno's everywhere. It is expensive so it must be good. Kiddies tend to play with other kiddies. There is peer pressure amongst them.

Heck, I grinded the dough myself like an obsession. Now I am forcing myself to take out the Dodo and fly around, absorb the beautiful scenery, the sunsets in Paleto. Some people refuse to take part in the everlasting dead match in free roam. They go live in a barn in Grapeseed with a rusty Tornado. That is a choice.

I had a shack in Paleto to harvest Sandkings. The commute between LS and Paleto was too much for me.

I like the classy life for my characters. But there are things I don't do as a player that other players do.

For example:

For both my characters, they only have one single apartment. I know several people that have multiple apartments for each of their characters, but I always felt like that was a waste.

I feel like my characters would have the one luxury apartment, and a couple garages dotted around the city in case they need to make a quick getaway if they're near their garage.

If and when mansions ever happen...I will get them each one mansion...but if more properties open up for us...my characters will just have more garages.

Most times I dress my character's classy. But since I own every piece of clothing you can in the game...I change it up and get my male thugged out or make my female slutty. It depends on my mood.

I personally don't mind the idea of going from 'rags to riches' - but I do think it works better to apply some restraint/realism, rather than just having all neon-coloured, Hot Wheels-style supercars, and dressing like a heavily-tattooed Juggalo with gold weapons. If nothing else, I try to remember that this is supposed to be loosely before the events of GTA V - if Los Santos had been the personal playground/battlefield of a psychotic cartoon character, you'd think that Michael, Dave Norton et al would have mentioned it at some point...

So, yeah - with that in mind, even though my 2nd character's gone from driving a stock Hyundai and living above an internet café in Little Seoul, to swanking about in a Maserati and having a string of timeshares spread across Vinewood, I've only ever done so in a way that fits the GTAO loose story arc (going from flogging cars and busting drug deals, to sabotaging FIB ops and doing high-profile mob assassinations) - and likewise, I try to keep the visual styling of both her outfits and her cars based on ...what real people would wear/drive.

Basically, I really like when people's custom characters/rides look so realistic, that ...you'd probably be forgiven for ignoring them, because you thought they were just a regular, unremarkable NPC. Personal preference, I know, but there's something cool (IMO) about being able to design original creations that fit in seamlessly with someone else's vision (and in any game, not just GTAO), rather than looking like something from embarrassingly-bad fan-fiction...

On my first character I own everything I care to own, Pegasus vehicles, clothes, 3 full garages, supers, all the weapons (nah, SCREW that SNS Pistol -__- smh), blah blah blah.

On my second character tho, I'm a lot more efficient. I only buy clothes for one specific style, I have 1 garage with an elegy (super cheap) and my favorite bike. Since the Update content weapons can be owned from Rank 1, I have no need to buy some of the lesser and intermediate guns.

I also don't need to drop 3 mil on a dump truck to "see if it's worth it" lol.

Basically, since I max out everything on my first character, I go for nearly the bare minimum, as far as my standards and goals are concerned, on my second character.
