Should you buy GTA5 on steam or retail?

Recommended Posts

- Is there any difference for steam and retail version in terms of multiplayer. I have heard that both of them will be using Social Club for online playing so both retail and steam version will end up playing on the same platform is that right?

- How will the retail version being patched or even download the DLC (If there is one). beucz they are not Steamwork does it has a client itself to patch?

You'll need retail if you have a severe bandwidth cap per month or live in a place which only has slow internet speeds. If you have no cap, slow internet speeds might not be as bad as having a severe cap.

If your internet speed and capping isn't an issue or worry, I'd recommend the steam version. It is the platform to support and the convenient platform for players.

How is Steam more convenient platform considering it will use Social Club for mutiplayer. I live in Australia and we don't have fast intern compare to Korea, HK or US. I can have 1Mb/s or a bit faster but mostly around this speed (Unlimited). I am just thinking if I sometimes want to play it offline I can't do it for the steam version cuz I have to log in steam to play it.

You can run games from steam from offline mode. You can also run Steam's version of GTA IV without even opening steam to play it. It is not necessarily going to be different for GTA V, but we can't yet be sure.

In your case, with slow internet, as my post covered, you'd probably want retail specifically because it's a very large download.

Steam is convenient because you can't scratch a software program, you can login anywhere in the world and play your games, and you don't take up space on shelves or in boxes with game media.

As i asked earlier is it confirmed that retail copy wont be steam compatible?

I don't think so. I suppose it will be similar to Max Payne 3 where retail version doesn't work on steam.

With 1 MB/s Down it will take you about 18 hours to Download GTA V. Just start the Update early/mid afternoon and it should not be to much of an Issue...be done by the next Morning.

That said, Australia really does have atrocious Internet (44th in the World) for how Developed a Country we are...I also doubt the NBN will help much unless we retrospectively get a full Fiber roll out.

Although I do have a fast connection, it's not the case with many countries in asia. sh*t, i have seen a guy surviving on 50kbps. damn life sucks there... especially when you can't get on your hands on retail and are forced to buy it from steam.

This is one of the reason that stop me from buying it from Steam. Actually I am quite happy for the 1MB/s we have now (TPG in Hurstiville). Back in 2007-2010 it was way lower and capped with high price. I just found TPG these days start rolling out Fiber internet. But the charge is quite high gonna wait for another 2-3 years for it to drop.

Now to your question,

There is no difference, whatsoever.

Buy the one you like to...or the one that is easily accessible to you.

I kinda predicted and understand if there is any difference between retail and steam version. My most concern is retail version of GTA5, in terms of the ability of updating the game and downloading dlc(s).

GTAV PC retail version would be integrated with RGSC ( Rockstar Games Social Club ), ofcourse without Steam.

RGSC PC client will handle updating and downloading, through its auto-updater,i.e. Launcher, Just like MP3..

NBN actually helps a fair bit, my connection is 100mb/s which gets me around 11MB/s download speeds on Steam.

Just wondering what is NBN. I have been hearing from it and ppl said it is a new internet connection where it use optic fabric. So is it simply just using optic fabric instead of normal cable for ADSL2+ and ppl named it NBN?

If you have great internet speed with no caps, Buy the Steam version.

Why? You are aware that it costs more than the disc version sold by most retailers right?

No. I didn't knew that. In my country it's the same price for both steam and retail. 40$.

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering since I'm getting the retail version of V and expecting it to be similar to MP3 retail.

With the retail version of MP3 and the RGSC running, do you need to keep a disc in the drive?

No. I didn't knew that. In my country it's the same price for both steam and retail. 40$.

$40 on Steam? Really?

Well I take it back then, Steam sucks in this country.

Yup. India and China, thanks to low economic conditions, are the only countries that has lower rates on Steam. China has even low. I think it's 30$ there.
