Best Anti-Virus?

Ever since I built my PC I haven't had an anti-virus installed. I have decided that I should get one since I had a little incident earlier that took hours to fix.

Now I am wondering, what is the best anti-virus that can easily be used? I a, also willing to pay for one. I wouldn't really feel safe with a free one. I may be wrong and some of them be good, but I would rather stick with a paid software.

The only softwares I have come across are Norton, and McAfee.

If you're buying one, ESET is probably the best one to pay for and it has the least false positives.

If you want a free one, I'd say just go with Microsoft Security Essentials, although if you're on Windows 8.1 you already have this and it's just called Windows Defender.

Pay- ESET, Kaspersky or BitDefender for the usual common pay AVs. Webroot if you want a really light client and cloud based signature/anomaly detection.

Free- Avast is probably the best balance of detection and performance. AVG manages marginally higher detections but has a much larger performance impact IME.
