IceZaroth
I own Multiple full blown server box's, I need to know a few things ... 1. Can we host our own servers 2. If we can host tell me we ain't limited to a maximum of 30 players ? 3. My main server box is a windows 2012 server on a Xeon multicore Server with 32GB Ram ah see below im sure that will be good enough. Main Server Specs and Hopefully good enough to host a clean Server :
Dock
"Hosting" a server? Nada. I mean, you can be the host, but it's not a dedicated server. At least on consoles. For PC they probably won't let us as well (officially), because GTA:O is their means of multiplayer and supports microtransactions (though not required at all to enjoy it may I add, as people do blow it out of proportion). I'd expect community made clients (NTAuthority is working on one I believe) to come to your aid in regards to hosting a dedicated server. And GTA:O officially supports up-to 30 players, but there are 2 more slots (used for spectating or something, I forgot, it has some special purpose). R* hasn't released much info', so we'll have to wait and see. BS_BlackScout and MythAlex
IceZaroth
Thank you for responding so fast, Hopefully someone @ R* can see the potential for allowing fulll blown dedicated hosts on PC that will not hamper there microtransactions, I'm not interested in them making money from my server, more that they would allow me to host a full blown dedicated, and I get the limit of 30 on a server for console, might expand on this for dedicated servers on the PC only time will tell on what way they go with this. MrTay
Would this affect the game progression data being saved to R* cloud server? I know it constantly saves throughout the game.
IceZaroth
Does the GTA: Online also save as you go along or are you talking about your progression in GTA:V which is more of a campaign of sorts where you progress through it. Remember i've never even played any of the GTA's to date V and online will be my first into the world so to speak. Also pray to all the gods that they release GTA:V and GTA:Online to PC in 64bit not 32bit ... 64bit would mean endless possibilities for the game but 32bit means the game would be stuck with a maximum of 3.5GB ram in use tops, Obviously this would hamper game play to no end. But im sure they will do 64bit. Edited February 12, 2015 by IceZaroth
MrTay
Yes, the Online does. I like the idea i must say but it constantly saves your progression to the cloud. ie: between missions, jumping between lobbies, back to campaign from online etc etc.. I've no idea where single player data gets saved to as i haven't played that for many months.
Dock
Welcome to GTA I guess, haha. GTA:O can be considered a pseudo online campaign mode, because you get the freedom of roaming around and causing chaos and mass destruction, with/against friends (or strangers), and also features "jobs", i.e.. missions, races, death matches, etc. It's a great concept, and they've done it well IMHO, but of course there are issues with it (not going to elaborate now). It auto saves after certain actions (like changing your toon's clothes or modifying a vehicle), or after jobs. It does so to their Social Club servers. Vice City criminal
Maybe if GTA:O was a standalone game.
Dock
It's 64 bit as well, no 32 bit support. And single player data is saved locally, although stats' are recorded on their servers as well.

Crystal3lf
It is already considered as a seperate game. Yeah confirmed by The Benz himself: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/423020/gta-v-interview-rockstar-north-president-leslie-The Benz-on-gta-online/ So, you could, in theory, have launched at the same time? The Benz - We could, but we want it to be known as a different entity, a separate thing, and it'll grow on its own. It'll be GTA Online; it's not part of GTA V. Obviously it's set in the GTA V engine, but it's going to grow and evolve into its own thing.
FugetSudo
I think most R* games are peer2peer, right? and don't run on dedicated servers. Their cloud servers are mainly for stat-tracking and character info too.
Eurotrash
Considering how much they charge for this stuff and how much more they expect us to spend on virtual currency, they'd better host the games themselves.
IceZaroth
Ok if RG dont allow people to host servers i'll cancel my server no point paying $$$ per month for a server and not use it.
nostrora
Sorry but, GTAO is P2P game. There is no Rockstar server for each lobby. The lobby is hosted by a player (in the lobby). But later, we find multiplayer mods, and we can play GTA V with at least 200-500 players. AND THEN you can create YOUR game server Edited February 18, 2015 by nostrora

NTAuthority
NTAuthority seems to think its not straight p2p. Where is that rascal.rather not people's typical interpretation of 'peer to peer' - in RAGE there's no server at all, unlike for instance CoD which used a full server hosted by one player. Bolcksta
I don't want to be that guy, but I will have to be. Hosting a "Personal" server will be impossible since Cloud data is always being saved through R* servers, like each 3-5 Minutes I'm guessing, you will notice the Spinning Orange circle, which requires a constant connection to R* servers. BUT. I have noticed at times where the Cloud service goes down for unknown reasons and everything still keeps going, so I'm guessing there could be a chance where R* will allow people with these Server rigs, to host 32 player servers which will probably require you to allow Rockstar to have partial ownership so the Cloud could access it and keep saving, get what I'm saying? Ex: If you Host a server with that Server box, before you fully establish you will have to agree with some things Rockstar will provide, and they will probably say how you will always need Cloud enabled on your server, and that it has no modification of any code or values or whatever. I hope you understood what I'm trying to say. Best of Hopes for Rockstar to allow hosting.
IceZaroth
Trust me if I can host 128 players without LAG on my server im sure this game would be easy, but RG have to allow this and getting back to your statement from earlier ... Hosting a "Personal" server will be impossible since Cloud data is always being saved through R* servers, like each 3-5 Minutes I'm guessing, you will notice the Spinning Orange circle, which requires a constant connection to R* servers. Umm the Server box I have full root access on, I can host any game off it without a hitch, I'm more than willing to let R* get its cloud data collection from the server this way we could or I know I could easily host like A 100 player server while still allowing R* to collection cloud data, this is very possible but R* probability to allow this would be slim to none from what i've read thus far. Other user comment about a mod allowing us to host a server might also be on the cards, very much looking forward to perminently hosting something in the GTA online gaming. Time will tell. and Patience is definately required here. Edited February 18, 2015 by IceZaroth
Njale
That would be like asking if league of legends offers dedicated servers, GTA O doesn't and will never have dedicated servers.
ClareXoBearrx3R9
So just out of plain curiosity, does anyone know the network protocol in use by GTA IV? Or Max Payne 3? In GTA IV, it seemed to be some similar thing to P2P though it's not exactly P2P. For instance, host privileges seem to get migrated based on some random "algorithm" rather than based on, say, connection quality. I don't believe Rockstar would start allowing people to start hosting servers for GTA but then again, I don't see an outright reason not to.
