What if most people actually liked the serious story of GTA IV?

It seems to be that with the HD Universe Rockstar wanted to move GTA into a more darker and serious direction (as shown with GTA IV) but then because many didn't like it they went back to the craziness of SA with GTA V

I like GTA IV's style a lot more but V is also very fun

I was just wondering how different GTA V would be if GTA IV was better received by the fans

Would a darker story even fit Los Santos?

GTA Games aren't supposed to be dark,Rockstar has proven that with GTAIV,GTA games are also not story based games, that's why they are so popular, and why rants about story don't matter.

I do not understand how people cannot get the theme of V...

Seriously,90% of the cutscenes,90% of the mission, Trevor's entire character...all that is constantly telling you "HEY PLAYER...THIS GAME KNOWS WHAT IT IS...HAVE FUN PLAYING...WE WON'T TRY TO BE SOMETHING MORE THAN WE CAN BE."

And yet people are: "Why does this game try to be so funny?" "GTAV's story sux,it's too lighthearted"

Here's the thing...it's not trying to be funny,Rockstar is not trying to be fun,it's a parody, literally everything in GTAV is a parody or a nod to something else but mashed up into its own.

V would be a very different game.

But the amount of whining from fans would be the same, if not even more.

I much prefer V over IV: IV makes me a bit depressed. I love the vibe of V. I have got to say Los Angeles is probably the best city to set a GTA in and a GTA set in Los Angeles needs a more light-hearted approach than the story of IV.. The only bigger weak point of V's story is the antagonists, who are much to tame to take them serious.

It's all about variety. GTA is not about only dark stories, or funny stories, somewhere-in-the-middle stories. It's all those things together.

I agree with you, though, OP. I liked IV's vibe more, but V was very funny and kept me constantly entertained. Many times I had to force myself to continue IV's story because I was so uninterested. It lacked focus as much as V's story, but at least V had other stuff going on in the story that kept me entertained, imo.

I would like it if the story was darker or more developed, since gameplay and side activities are kinda sh*tty.

Older games had cool side activities to rely on but what do we have? Dumbed down driving, annoying cops, cheats are limited, no criminal side activities, yoga!... Is that what we are supposed to do if we don't like the story?

I think there would be some happier people of the story was darker, others who don't care either way.

V is a challenge to imagine as a dark serious game now, you could have Michael more depressed, frowning all the time. Franklin isn't exactly Chris Rock so he would sit ok In a serious world. Trevor though, he's a comedy psycho, real psycho is a bit harder to market, nobody wants the game to be called a Charles Manson sim.

I'm guessing the ending would be Michael hanging himself, slowly swinging. Franklin shot by ballas, just laying down looking at the sky, slowly fading away, like some political message about gangs. Trevor would go to prison and get the chair. Happy.

Of of course. Then you would have people whining that it is too dark and they didn't listen to the fans and god help them if they kept the driving from IV.

Who says a "dark" story can't have any comedy and everyone has to die?

If executed well they all could off have fit it. Ending where trevor dies would probably be cannon lol

I found the story alright, but the villains where a bit of a let down, they never felt truly dangerous, mft were just their bitches up until the end.

This. Finally, an ounce of common sense from someone on this horrendous forum site; and from my own country as well.

If Rockstar had went with the GTA IV storyline approach in V, people would probably accuse them of turning the franchise into COD, same old sh*t with every installment

I think some want gritty and realistic, IV's isn't realistic, it's just more serious, Niko's story is anyway. The lost and the damned isn't quite as depressing, ballad of gay tony is the same as V, just as whacky. Amazingly V wasn't the 1st to abandon IV's tone. If it was realistic the characters probably would die lol

GTA IV took itself seriously. There was alot of dark comedy if you paid attention but it took no shortcut on the story it was telling and in turn churned out one of the best stories I've ever played in a game. If you ask me GTA V went too much into Saints Row territory. I would say most gamers are casual gamers, and casual gamers like to do what in GTA...run around killing people and being complete morons. Look to any GTA Youtube channel for validation on that point. GTA IV, while it could be played like that...really didn't feel right for Niko, a character with a strong moral compass and principals above getting money. Rockstar obliged these casuals with GTA V though. Unrealistic cars, a plethora of underpowered guns, and a whole character pretty much designed for 12 year olds to carry out their tyrannical fantasies. This is why the story is complete garbage and Rockstar caters to the online crowd. They know that's where their casuals are. I grew up playing GTA, I've seen the best and the worst of it, and I loved GTA IV for its grimy realism and deep plot. Then GTA V went and screwed it all up. I truly do wish it was better received, and in hindsight, maybe Rockstar will realize that GTA IV was a step in the right direction.

I think V may have been a bit too successful for them to ever go back to how things were in IV. The moaning about how things were in IV didn't help.

I think that as long as they add a sh*tton of content like in SA and V, people will buy the sh*t out of it even if the story is more serious/dark/emo/whatever than IV's.

Once you get a theory of how the thing works, everyone wants it to be just like the first.

@Zodape People already bought the sh*t out of V.. with an extra 10 million on PS4/Xbox one.. So adding a few more activities won't do much. Especially to the casual players who like to f*ck around.

The next story won't be like V's, or IV's. It'll be different, like every other GTA game.

The problem with another IV style story is they like to keep characters in character as much as they can now. A lot of the stuff from V, would be stupid in a serious story. Niko using a chain gun, Niko flying a fighter jet (or any plane, the maps tiny :p)

The game would be back to boring cars and boring weapons again. Online would suffer, they need to make money, not please everyone.

I don't really think the lower level of seriousness and darkness in V 's story has anything to do with why it has come under significant criticism from certain elements of the GTA fan base. I personally had no problem with V's story feeling less serious than IV's, what bothered me more was that I felt the theme of the story was poorly implemented, a large part of the story had a boring script, the characters in general were nothing special, the lack of random gang violence AI, and the lack of decent crime side missions. If V had got all those things right, a less serious and more light-hearted story would have not have bothered me in the slightest.

I would have preferred if V was a bit more serious in its tone though. I think this would have been the case if the game had remained focused on organized crime, gangs, and the drug trade. In my view, the game seemed a bit to obsessed with parody and gimmicky stuff which was to its detriment in a way. It just made the game feel corny and goofy.

I think that as long as they add a sh*tton of content like in SA and V, people will buy the sh*t out of it even if the story is more serious/dark/emo/whatever than IV's.

My point exactly, I agree. Edited by Official General

There`s nothing wrong with GTA story being more light-hearted but the problem is V isn`t light-hearted but just silly.

Rockstar seriously overreacted with V`s silliness. The whole game is infested with stupid clownish jokes and thee overall that interfers with the main storyline. And the main reason for this is Trevor.

Whenever the story wants to be serious then Trevor shows up with his retarded and juvenile jokes. And especially annoying is his childish picking on Michael all the time.

"you want to get things done, go to the busy man, this rich f*ck is useless"

ARGHHH!! EVERY f*cking moment of the story, god if R* would have a slightest idea of how annoying this can be to some players...

I can imagine some 10 years old kid laughing like crazy at this stuff but they aren`t the majority of GTA V players. Even if it seems like they are due to the nature of this game.

Tone the silly "humor" down ffs. This is the only GTA game where i can`t find 1 single serious moment in the whole storyline. Bury the hatchet mission was a very good candidate for being serious if those Chinesse assholes wouldn`t come and f*ck up the things with their stupid "boyfriend" jokes.

As for black humor, personally i love it as long as it`s that original British-style oldschool black humor. But R* failed at original black humor in this game and they f*cked up every moment that had potentials to show the real black humor. I`m talking about Trevor`s part particularly, you know cannibalism, murders, disappearing hitchikers and all that. It`s not black humor, it`s just stupidness.

And just like @OG said, it`s OK if the vibe is more lighthearted as long as they remain focused on GTA game with crime activities. I think we wouldn`t complain so much if they would give us more crime/gang/drug side activities, even if the goofiness of the game would stay the same.

But when Rockstar makes 99% of the game clownish, takes away every decent crime activiity we had in the past and replace it with yoga, monkey mosaics and life invader page, then we have a huge f*cking problem.

While I do believe that V's story was a bit over-the-top at times, people compare it way too much to IV. V isn't trying to be IV. V's story is over-the-top for a reason. That's the way it's meant to be. Too many people are adjusted to IV's dark and serious tone that they've grown to love over the years. Since V doesn't have that tone, people complain about it. Not all people, though.

Just because a lot of people didn't like the tone of one game doesn't mean the end of GTA or Rockstar. that's ridiculous to think. Each game will continue to have their own mood that fits the story, location, and characters. So what if the games are a little wild at times? So what if they're darker and have a more gripping story? People will continue to play them. People will continue to find enjoyment out of them. Just because a restaurant makes a new flavor of realistic steak that you don't like, doesn't mean that all of their successors are going to be the same.

yeah I know IV isn't realisitc

I just like the darker tone of IV more but V is pretty fun too

They probably realized when they were making TBoGT that most GTA fans don't want serious so I guess we will

stick with it for GTA VI too

nah man I don't think they will go back to IV's serious style at least not for the next few GTA's

V was way too well received for that

The next story won't be like V's, or IV's. It'll be different, like every other GTA game.

no I think if they actually added a country side to Liberty City (like planned)

there would be missions with Niko flying planes (maybe not jets but in V's story there were no jets either)

I don't see how flying a plane would hurt the serious story IV isn't realisitc either

As much as I like GTA IV I do wish the missions had more variety

and how would the cars and weapons be any different if they made a serious GTA again? I don't get it

It's actually funny when you think about it. GTA IV is often regarded as being too dark and serious yet to me it has some of the most genuinely hilarious moments in the series without feeling like it's trying too hard. Some of the conversations between Niko and Vlad make me laugh harder than anything else from the 3D era and GTA V.

You know what GTA V reminds of sometimes? It reminds me some of those over the top parodies like Disaster Movie, Meet The Spartans etc that rely on sexual innuendos every few minutes to try and get laugh out of the audience. GTA IV reminds me of the dry and dark humour from Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

i know i'm replying to MVC, but tbh at first Brucie and Roman came across as annoying (i confess) i thought they tried to be too funny in a otherwise serious game, but with time they grew on me both and i learned to love them and finding them funny.

if maybe i could remove my slightly big rose glasses i don't know if i would find funny Brucie..that's just my two cents tho.
