The Ps3 was worth it just as a Blue Ray player, just as the X1 is worh it just for the microsoft network access.

The PS4 had around 14M sales last year, if they keep that up they'll catch PS3 within 2 years, especially as people get rid of their PS3's for PS4.

 

Obviously this is all theory and we don't know what will happen, but the PS3 is declining and the PS4 is rapidly increasing, releasing games that could be exclusive to 4 on PS3 will not get the people to upgrade thus loosing out on potential sales/profit.

PS4 is up to almost 20 million now, regardless of the specifics we agree there are still a lot of PS3's out there and it's hard to believe R* will ignore them. But my original point was I cant imagine why someone would buy a next gen machine just to play games

 

The graphics improvement in the PS4 is roughly 7x the PS3 while the PS3 was about a 75x GFLOP improvement over the PS2. So compared to the last generation change it's a barely noticeable improvement. Sure more RAM means larger worlds, more players etc..., but the next gen machines are media machines that need to be connected to a network to take advantage of. Buying either one of these and not paying for the online access is like buying a nice car without a motor.

 

Your not buying a machine with your next gen purchase, your buying a network.....
