Distant License Plates spotted

Recommended Posts

Picture of my mates 1986 Honda City Convertible outside his home in Soest, Germany.

It has Russian plates from Sachalin, the islands north of Japan. It is there where the Honda was bought and brought from. Via the Trans Siberian Railway from Vladivostok and it's own wheels from Moscow:

f29t5643p3126310n6.jpg

It is ultra rare with it's factory-fitted air-conditioning (even one of the compartments in the dash-board is cooled via air-con), the centre console out of the City Turbo "Bulldog", the Nardi steering wheel and the scarce alloy wheels from a Mitsuoka of all cars (look smart on the City I think)

Distance from Jushno-Sachalinsk to Soest: 11,536 kms

I bet this car could be one of the Top 20 vehicles in Europe with the most distant license plate. I sometimes see cars from Russia usually with the 77 (Moscow) or 78 (St. Petersburg) i have NEVER seen cars from Russia that far east.

It's funny that in Russia's far east, 90% of the vehicles are right hand drive when in Russia, you drive on the right and the steering wheel is on the left. I bet is cheaper to import Japanese cars than bringing Lada cars from Samara. If Russia was in the EU, all Japanese cars that are NOT brought yo Europe, could be imported to Russia and then transported to Germany and from there, they could be sold unofficially to many European countries. Since this is not possible, Anybody in Spain that wants to buy a Skyline, Supra, Special edition of the EVO or Imprezza, goes to the UK and tries to find one.

Saw a Toyota Hillux the other day with Equatorial Guinea license plate. The car had been modified to off road in harsh terrains. Sadly though, i was driving and Couldn't take a picture, but the car was like this:

Toyota_4Runner_GS_1995_Front_3-4_1_HiRes

and the license plate was this one:

You are right about the plates. Here in Germany the most common Russian plate is 39. I wonder what the reaction of the German motorists would be, if they knew where that is.

39 is Kaliningrad Oblast.

Kaliningrad is one of the youngest Russian cities, as it was only founded in 1946.

It was called Königsberg before that and was the capital of Germanys most eastern province.

Most distant plate? Probably the Japanese plates on the neighbour kid who imported a RHD Civic squatboxcar from Japan this summer.

I laugh everytime I see him drive by on the wrong side.

I spotted two American license plates from Florida and California, the one that had the California license plate was a Portuguese emigrant that returned to Portugal with an American car, he replaced it with a Portuguese license plate. It's unusual to spot US license plates due to America's distance from Portugal. It makes me wonder if there are any cars with Portuguese license plates cruising around U.S.

There was a thread like this one on a skyscrapercity forum, and i saw a picture of a Smart with a Licencse plate from Spain in Los Angeles. Too bad the thread got erased (I don't know why).

So you could find cars with Portuguese plates in the US. But not a lot. You are more likely to find a Portuguese plate in Macau rather than in the US.

I spotted a Nissan Qashqai with plates from Estonia on the Highway.

Spotted this VW Van from Greece just now.

Although it might be an imported car, you don't get to see many Dubai license plate cars in Spain. Although the owner might live in London and decided to drive to Barcelona for the holidays who knows.

The Iranian bus is nice.

Every so often on my daily commute I see an Iranian truck driving on the autobahn. But sadly never could take a picture...

It is brand new and only has official gouvernment plates like the bottom one on the bus. The yellow plates seem to be national.

Now with the sanctions lifted I hope to see more of those on our roads.

:-)

I took these a few years ago, or 8, from France I believe. On an epic road trip around the globe.

Although it's NOT my picture, there is a fun and interesting story about a guy who had to travel from Barcelona to Moscow (Where his Russian GF was) for personal issues. And he decided to do the trip on his old Corrado that had been over 7 years on a Police Depot (He dosen't say why). He made it to Moscow but he had a few problems. It's quite a nice story, if you guys want i can open a thread and post it.

Summer vacationers are all around up here in NY, so I've seen a good amount of "distant" plates, such as a black Delaware plate, similar to this (I didn't even know these existed).

Besides that, I've seen plates from California, New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, South / North Carolina, Georgia, and Kansas.. and then a guy with an Ohio plate set randomly asking if he can fix the damage on my car while I was in a parking lot

The owner of the Volvo.

I do think the owner of that car may be a Polish immigrant. There's a lot of Polish people in Illinois.

^ Is California one of those states where Front License plates are NOT required? If so, Can you put any license plate you want in the front?

They are required but the Veyron's owner shipped the car over from Saudi Arabia a few days ago and he's not staying for very long so he does not need to get a California plate.
