Yeah. Add me to the list of new characters and story.

The game just hits a good nerve that pretty much anyone can relate to. We all grow up and go through the crazy time that is being young and in school. Just keep playing off that and the series will be fine. If they keep Chloe and/or Rachel they run the risk of spoiling a memory that we all have...thus ruining a great game.

Kind of like how The Breakfast Club is a great movie but Saint Elmo's Fire disappoints.

The fact it's the same team developing the game (and story) and that they've said they began working on it right after the release of the physical game might mean they haven't done it the "milking the selling idea" kind of way. Assuming the publisher doesn't put (much) pressure on them, they should respect the plot, characters and memories from the first title, after all those are the reasons the game is so beloved.

I completely subscribe touching the previous characters, either continuing the plot or going back is a big risk. Continuing it is pretty much impossible without scrapping the player's decisions, while going back can surely fill the gaps and questions and could be interesting to get to know more about Chloe and Max, we wouldn't get the time control power that is the base of the game - and that idea is touched enough already over the episodes.

Distancing from the characters is a safe move and doesn't mean it won't be possible to fill some gaps from the first game, but there's still the risk those hypothetical new characters disappoint when compared to the original ones.

Here's an interesting question. For everyone who would like a new story/set of characters would you like to play as a female again or a male this time? I personally have mixed feelings on this. Sometimes I feel females work better in these kind of emotion charged games like Jodie from Beyond: Two Souls, Clementine from The Walking Dead, Ellie from The Last Of Us etc. The only game similar in tone/atmosphere that tugged at my heart strings with a male lead was Heavy Rain with Ethan.

Max was awesome and I think she'll be hard to top.

Intriguing. I'm not sure what to make of this.

Ideally, Deck Nine releases a spin-off featuring Chloe and Rachel to appease those begging for more from Arcadia Bay and the first set of characters while Dontnod carries the series forward with a new set of characters and a new setting each season. I mean, I certainly wouldn't mind a prequel as I thought Life is Strange, or the universe it's set within, left a lot of unanswered questions, though some of them may be in a better position to be answered by Dontnod as the series progresses. I can eventually see Life is Strange as an 'anthology' surrounding time manipulation. I thought the mechanic was underutilized so I'm hoping to see more of it.

So I gave this game a chance but dear lord I could not get into it... There's so much problems to unfold for me that I'll just make a bulleted list:

  • Time travel is never explained in the game. Why it wasn't, I have no clue.
  • Chloe is petty and kind of pathetic. She gets mad at you for not taking blame for the weed if you choose not to be her fall guy. She also shot a dog and it's owner with little provocation. That's f*cked up.
  • None of the dialogue has any style to it and instead opts for "le internet may mays" as authentic dialogue. While I do confess this is probably what a bunch of teenagers do, some probably un-ironically, they're memes. They'll be forgotten quick and it'll make your story look dated within a few years.
  • Y'know, for a game that says my choices matter, I thought it was strange how there was two endings to the game.
  • People give David a lot of sh*t, but honestly he seemed pretty justified in his actions. The guy loved his wife and wanted to help raise his edgy, stoner bro daughter. He was a security guard that wanted to install cameras into his house and the school to make sure his family and community was safe. He's a bit of a schlub but he isn't a bad guy.
  • Also, the game's time travel has some horrifying implications. So, when Max does the butterfly effect and transports to the alternate reality where she's popular and hangs out with Victoria, the old Max is transported to this new timeline Max. Old Max is confused and realizes she's in a different timeline, but where did New Max go? New Max just suffered a switch of consciousness from another timeline. And what happens when Old Max leaves that timeline for a better one? Is New Max now dead? Details are very important...
  • Why did a selfie win first place at a photo competition?

I realize that I'm in the minority in this thread, but I think it's healthy to bring in different points of view and start debate. If anyone wants a much better version of what I just wrote, this guy's video is pretty good on the topic at hand:

How dare you come in here with that tom foolery!

I do agree with you about David. You forgot to mention he was also military, which being a hardass is a common trait in most servicemen/women. He genuinely cared, and it was easier for me to see this in a second playthrough.

An important thing to mention for those that might've missed it, this is NOT Dontnod's Life is Strange new game, this is a prequel made by a different studio.

If that's what will happen, does that mean we'll have actually 2 new Life is Strange games? I'm not too sure if that's correct, it could be the same devs under a different studio, after all the announcement video was made trough the Life is Strange channel on YouTube.

I mean, it's unlikely devs would let their game name be used by a separate studio making another title while they were coincidentally developing a new title as well.

That is actually correct. Plus, the IP is Square Enix's, despite Dontnod being the developers. That's what happens when you get a publisher. We ARE getting two LiS games - this one and the "original" LiS 2.

So yes, that means there are now TWO Life is Strange projects in development, with DONTNOD Entertainment having also recently announced that they are also working on a new game. You’ll be the first to hear when we have more news on their game but for now, let’s focus on the newly announced Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

That is rather interesting. The game seems to respect the first title's artstyle and vibe, and hopefully won't disappoint. Still, by putting things on that perspective it becomes clear this one is probably a moneymaker for SE, offering what players want and not so much devs' vision of the story (obviously).

In the best case scenario, we get two great new titles of the franchise. In worst case, a legal dispute resulting in no games at all. In either case, it's expected we'll then get a bunch of plot holes and inconsistencies.

Cautious about the prequel, but definitely looking forward to the LiS 2 from the original team.

It sucks so much that Ashly Burch won't be returning. Whoever's voicing Chloe is hopefully good though.

When I saw the video with her giving advice about Chloe I thought she'd voice her as well, it sucks that the character really won't be the same without her. No matter how good the new voice actor might be, she'll simply sound and pass a completely different feeling no matter what.

I wish a collector's edition came out for either this or DONTNOT version. If there's a game I'd surely buy it would be Life is Strange.

On one hand, a prequel does seem kind of unnecessary. On the other, I can't really be too disinterested in a new story starring one of my favorite characters ever, in a prequel to one of my favorite games in recent years. So yeah, I'll be there.

One thing I love is that

They straight-up confirmed that they don't want to canonize one ending or another, hence the prequel route. I love this; for one, it means my headcanon where Chloe gets to live with Max and they're haunted by how morally ambiguous Max's choice was, but they still have each other (also there were some survivors of the storm) won't be disputed :p. On the other, I really dislike when sequels to games with multiple-choice endings only address one ending. I know it'd be too much to ask for them to basically craft multiple campaigns based on the previous game's ending, but if you're only going to make one ending canon, why bother giving players the choice to begin with? I dunno, it's just always bugged me.

And yeah, it's disappointing that Ashly won't be playing Chloe again. She was so incredible in that role, and her performance is a major reason why Chloe's one of my favorite characters ever. But on the other hand, I've watched some clips and her new actress, Rhianna DeVries, sounds a lot like her, IMO. It kinda reminds me of the Scarface: The World is Yours situation. Al Pacino couldn't voice Tony again due to decades of smoking ruining his voice, but his new actor Andre Sogliuzzo was eerily good. As long as the new voice actor sounds enough like their predecessor, recasting isn't always a dealbreaker to me. And at least Ashly's still on board as a consultant, so Chloe's depiction will still have her special touch.

It's going to be strange (no pun intended) to play a Life Is Strange game without the time travel rewind.;)

Then again I'm looking to the further emphasis on Chloe's relationship with Rachel.

The dialogue in this seems... extremely sloppy. Got slightly less convinced after looking at the first minutes of that gameplay. I don't think anyone but Dontnod can do a proper LiS game, after all they're the original developers and the ones with the magic formula.

I will likely play this, maybe it's better than it seems, but the dialogue feels sparse, short sentences, and not as much substance. Even if Dontnod's original LiS had some cringe moments as well, it felt more substantial and made more sense.

Edit: Got slightly better after the punk concert scene but there's still something lacking. More hopeful but as I said, I'm a little bit too invested in Dontnods skills and this looks a bit off at times.

Edit 2: Last half convinced me more, still some flaws but doesn't seem that badly made.

It's possible DONTNOT's upcoming title don't offer time travel either; it's a valid point from Before The Storm's devs that it was a Max's power and conjugated well with her personality. The most logical route, however, is to further show the player more about the time travelling power with perhaps a new character receiving that power as well, but in a different scenario.

Before The Storm is like a confort zone game where players will get a main character they already know and love, a familiar place and secondary characters and the safety to know it'll end in an expectable way no matter what. DONTNOT'S version, from what we know so far, will most likely cut connections with the first title's characters and place so it's something unexpected and that the players' good reaction isn't ensured. Maybe that's why Square Enix did this move, perhaps they wanted a new title that would more likely sell well rather than another shoot in the dark.
