My favourite:

GTA San Andreas by far. This game just marked me. Compelling story, great characters, nice side-missions, a huge and varied map to explore, lots of different vehicles (and trains!), overall just fun. This was peak GTA.

An honorable mention to GTA III for starting it all and Vice City for refining the formula and ultimately being the stepping stone towards SA (and also that 80s vibe, you just cannot top that).

Least favourite:

GTA V and Online. This is Rockstar going full corporative: no effort put into the story (apparently focusing in having 3 characters took all their attention away from making an actual good story), HORRIBLE characters that were either mediocre versions of previous characters (Franklin, Haines...) or just straight up bad (the DeSanta family made me want to put a bullet in my head everytime I saw them); huge map but with a lot of wasted space (also only one city now, contrary to old San Andreas state), MICRO-TRANSACTIONS.

I also don't like the 2D games, but that's just me not getting into an specific genre. GTA IV wasn't very good in my eyes either, but at least that one had a good story with good characters.

2D:

✔️ Grand Theft Auto

✖️ Grand Theft Auto: Advance

3D:

✔️ Grand Theft Auto III

✖️ Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

HD:

✔️ Grand Theft Auto IV

✖️ Grand Theft Auto V

Overall, Grand Theft Auto: Advance is the worst, but.. come on, it's just a Gameboy Advance game. In my opinion Grand Theft Auto V is the worst, but Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comes second.

That's how I rate Grand Theft Auto games I've played:

Grand Theft Auto 1: 5/5

Grand Theft Auto 2: 3/5

Grand Theft Auto III: 8/10

Grand Theft Auto: Advance: 1/5

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: 6/10

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: 5/10

Grand Theft Auto IV: 10/10

Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned: 7/10

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony: 5/10

Grand Theft Auto V: 4/10

Hate to be one of the people that hates GTA IV story wise but honestly Niko is this big "I escaped my home country because of the violence" character. Its implied he's done things in order to survive but now he wants to move past all this. Right ok then.

A few moments later

Niko is now heavily involved in an all out gang war with several factions , is getting into shootouts with the police and said gangs and is going about assasinating people. It just seems like such a betrayal of character. That and to have Niko complain about all the violence only for us the player then to make him commit mass acts of shootouts just for fun. They could of either written his arc differently or just had him be the Devils Advocate

It sounds like you don't understand the story or his character as much as you think you do honestly. I've finished the story 13 times and I'm still not sure where people get the idea from that he "complains" about violence. Clearly a trait of Niko's character is he's cynical of American culture.

However I don't remember him complaining about violence necessarily. Early on in the story as he's finding his feet he shows a bit of hesitance like when he's asked to kill Ivan, but I don't really put that down to complaining. It's not like he talks for 10 minutes about how violence is bad then he goes and kills old ladies a few moments later.

It's simple really. He wanted to come to America to start a new life and part of that was putting his past behind him by confronting Darko and Florian, but Roman's lies about his gambling debts complicates things and he's slowly dragged back into the criminal underworld to where he's a hired gun/assassin. If things played out exactly how he envisioned he would've just came to America, set up station in Hove Beach and well that's pretty much it, but it doesn't make for a very compelling or interesting game.

I’m probably in the minority here, but after thinking it over. GTA 2 is my favorite GTA. GTA 3 is a close second though, but man there is just something special about GTA 2. Nostalgia is definitely a factor, I was 9 when GTA 2 released and played the hell out of it. Even today I can still play it and have fun.

I love the atmosphere of GTA 2, the retro futuristic Anywhere City, the pedestrians, green shirt guy stealing cars and that one red shirt guy who keeps trying to steal your wallet, the gangs you can work for and gain respect. The daylight setting which gives a optimistic feeling in an otherwise dystopian city run amok with crime, the memorable and hilarious radio stations (who doesn’t love Teriyaki chan?) and Head Radio, commercials. The cars just looking... weird, the cars look weird and I love it. You can take a train too, but not in PS version which sucks. The weapons are insane and you can blow people sky high (literally), kill frenzies, the elvis guys. GTA 2’s world feels alive and has a unique identity.

GTA 2 is often overlooked in my opinion because 3 came right after and changed everything, you cannot deny that GTA 3 was revolutionary for open world games. As much as I love and respect 3, it will never be better than 2. GTA 2 to me is what GTA games are supposed to be about, stealing cars, shooting people, and causing mayhem in a gang infested city with cops trying to take you down. There is no cinematic cutscenes or movie like storyline with drama, it’s just pure fun.

Now onto my least favorite GTA. GTA 5. I hate it, with a passion. I feel like GTA 5 killed the series, specifically online with all the kids becoming fake fans. GTA 5 had horribly written characters, I feel like Trevor is cartoonish and Franklin is just a rehashed CJ. And Michael? *sigh* man he is boring, not very relatable considering he’s rich and has a family (though dysfunctional). I hate how they turned Lazlow from a funny, sensible, and loveable radio host into a clown and creep. It just doesn’t do his character justice, what a shame. The storyline is not very exciting or refreshing, it’s been done before, felt like a rehashed action movie. The AI is also terrible, just look at the cops in 5 vs cops in 4. The weapons also feel... empty, hard to explain but the weapons just don’t feel real like they did in previous games. GTA 5 was a turning point for the series and not for the better.

Favorite: GTA IV; Second GTA I have ever played (after GTA V). The story is great, the characters are well developed and the realistic handling of cars can make you take a lot of advantage from the physics,

i.e: Doing a handbrake turn with a car and you hit the curve of the sidewalk to get pushed back into the street. Also the variety on missions, i.e: Truck Haul, Harboring a Grudge, Three Leaf Clover, etc. And also on TBOGT there's a lot of variety (as they say,"Variety is the spice of life"). The auto-aim mechanics are a little bit wonky though and there's not a lot of clothing or customization options but that's it.

Worst: GTA V; The first GTA I played (before GTA IV). Cons: The story sucks ass (They should've focused more on Franklin's story with the hood/gang instead of Michael and Trevor's boring ass FIB story). The character development is inexistent since they're just a bunch of people with preset motives and emotions. Pros: The handling of cars is much more arcade-ish (not saying its bad since you have more control over the cars), much better gunplay although you cant crouch like in IV and a lot more clothing and customization options. PS: Also Online is plagued with a sh*tload of Broomsticks (Opressor MKII) and they should honestly get rid of that crap and the K/D but whatever.

Alright, let's see. Throughout my whole life I have always had tons of fun with the GTA games. It first started with the topdown view one. I never had the game myself at first and only could play at my cousin's, and I loved it! I didn't talk English at all back then and didn't do missions really. I just f*cked around and used cheat codes too. Had the best times ever! This continued with future GTA games as well. I got my own system over time of course from my parents.

GTA 3 blew my mind with its direction into 3D. Yet again, I couldn't understand English so I didn't really complete the story. Only completed a few missions, but I just enjoyed f*cking around. Vice City I did complete, but English still wasn't my strongest point. I remember my dad seeing GTA SA in a paper of some sorts and asked me if I wanted it. I was like "No, that is fine. Vice City is all I need". He got me the game regardless and I was absolutely stunned to see I could ride a bicycle! I had my best times in SA and loved it to death! I understood English better, missions were great, the world was awesome and I loved to explore, mess around and have fun with cheatcodes. SA is my all time favorite GTA game. Of course I don't play it now and choose V over it when I wanna play a gta game, but that is because there isn't anything else for me to get out of that game anymore. in V I can f*ck around with my friend.

When GTA 4 came around I was always looking on the internet for news about it on a daily basis. And I loved the website with the city showing more info as days went by. I was just amazed with how the physics looked and that humans didn't fall flat like in SA anymore. I had a f*ckton of fun in GTA 4, but I did dislike it only being cities and no country side aside from one park.

GTA V was pretty cool at first, but nothing really wowed me. I hated the new physics cars and people got. I disliked controlling more than 1 protag. I didn't really care for any of them.

I seriously hope GTA 6 brings back the wow factor, but I have my doubts.

My favorite was 3. A big reason? It was my first game ever, I love Chatterbox & Head Radio, & Lazlow & the atmosphere of the game overall.

My least favorite?  I enjoy them all, but GTA Online. If I had to choose a single player game... GTA TLaD

A lot of people value storytelling over everything else as I can see. A lot of Gta IV's in the top. That's quite surprising to me. I am even more perplexed by the fact that the vast majority of people prefer TLAD over TBOGT, but I guess it's a matter of setting. Dark, depressing, grimy tone is, perhaps, easier to resonate with, as opposed to glamorous, shiny, ostentatious vibe of TBOGT.

My top would be:

1. San Andreas, Vice City(both had a huge cultural impact on me not to mention they're incredible games on their own)

2. IV(As much as I'm not a fan of certain gameplay aspects of it, this game was clerly made with a strong passion)

3. Tbogt(I adore the setting and Gay Tony is probably my favorite secondary character in the series)

4. V(It may feel a bit soulless and Onlice is cancer, but man, the pure amount of fun I had playing it makes one thing clear, it just works. The online Heist mastermind challenge completion is one of the best gameplay experiences I've ever had.)

5. TLAD(I don't like bikers, but it was still nice to see some good story from a different perspective)

6. III(Played it after I've already seen VC, SA and IV. Still a good game, but of course could not impress me as much anymore).

I still love every single game listed above and even though I beat the sh*t out of them all I'd still prefer any of them over 95% of any other games.

I do value storytelling highly but I also value gameplay and imo GTA IV has the best storytelling and gameplay. Lots of people are big fans of the detailed and realistic physics/driving/combat etc in IV as well as the storytelling. But I think you're right about TLAD vs TBOGT. Many people who are fans of IV's tone will also be fans of TLAD's tone before TBOGT's.

My Favourite is Vice City though San Andreas is a very close second. These were the games of my childhood and I think they still hold up reasonably well

Least favourite is hard to choose though if I had to it'd probably be between LCS and III of the ones I've played. Still like them too

I think GTA IV's gameplay(especially it's combat) doesn't get as much praise compared to the story though I found IV one of the better GTA's if not the best GTA for free roaming, shooouts and police chases in this game were great. So I'm with you on that aspect. Though I'm with @RenegadeAngel in preferring the glamorous TBOGT over TLAD, maybe an unpopular opinion but TBOGT has my favourite rendition of Liberty City :pp

I can't choose between TLAD and TBOGT. I love the grittiness of TLAD and the uniqueness of living with and always doing missions with your gang and always being on a bike. But I also love the new features of TBOGT and how it gives a contrasting look at Liberty City with its more light hearted and glamorous vibe. Even though IV is my favourite I'm glad TBOGT is so different to it, nice to have the variety.

Sure, I am a fan too, especially of combat. I'd prefer it to any other GTA any day. It's just, GTA IV is more of a "entertain yourself" type of game in my book. Not a lot of things to do other than shooting and driving compared to previous GTA's. Episodes, however, add to that component, bring lots of new stuff. If all of the things Rockstar implemented in Epsiodes would have been in IV, it could have been a perfect game.

Vice City. So many great memories in that game, I can just be listening to music on spotify and certain songs just trigger good memories from many years ago. Recently replayed it and had a blast, so it not just grandpa getting nostalgic.

Least favourite: Liberty City Stories. Just found it bland and not memorable compared to the rest of the series. Still a decent game.
