Virus Won't Go Away

Recommended Posts

My laptop recently got a virus. I was updating Java or whatever it's called and it started to download a heavy amount of random applications and such. One of which happened to be a virus which does stuff to Internet browsers. I have online accounts and their info saved on Google Chrome and the virus affected Google Chrome. Now I'm scared because I keep thinking the virus will get into my accounts across various sites, make them unusable, and let people track my IP.

Scan with AV using up-to-date definitions, ideally in safe mode.

Run TDSSKiller to ensure so bootkit/rootkit elements remain.

Run MBAM to remove any adware or browser hijacking plugins or BHOs.

That should get it sorted.

The main lure from exploit kits for Chrome users are fake Flash and Java updates. They can't usually exploit vulnerabilities in the browser due to the sandbox so have to manually force users to download malware disguised as legitimate updates.

They do bundle some Adobe stuff with sh*tty adware like Ask toolbar though.

Isn't this just regular bloatware? It comes with most freeware, and is often hidden under "express install (recommended)" prompts and the like, in hopes of sneaking Ask toolbars and similar crap onto your PC. I'm pretty sure Java isn't any exception here. These can easily be uninstalled in most cases, or avoided entirely by paying attention during the installation/updating process.

Java is well known for having security problems. It's the main reason why Microsofts version became so popular.

That post made no sense at all.

How so? A quick search on java security loopholes/problems will show you what i mean.

It was the "Microsoft version of Java" bit. The vulnerabilities in Java are common knowledge (except when they're not) but are largely irrelevant in the context of Chrome, which is sandboxed and therefore generally not exploitable through plugin vulnerabilities.
