Tips for customizing cars?

Big spoilers, vents, canards, splitters and diffusers for max downforce. Tow hooks because your race machines shouldn't be road legal. Fully tinted windows so no one can see the mysterious person annihilating them in races.

Actually, just do what you like and don't give a rats buttocks what others think. Best way to go about it.

Don't buy things solely because of the price and just customize like you'd see them in real life.

Use real life examples to model your car from and don't listen to the haters.....

I'm not trying to be a dick, just curious.

Why did you base a 69 Charger off of a 69/70 Challenger RT?

There were some pretty amazing looking Chargers with Plum Crazy made, my Uncle was in a Cruiser Club in Vancouver with a guy that had one back in the 90s. The way the chrome looked against plum crazy paint is orgasmic.

And this is coming from a GM/Chevy guy.

The Stallion is the only other vehicle close and it looks too much like a GM, Dukes is the best for a Mopar look and the chrome secondary does pop!

Definitely agree with using real-life cars as inspiration, be they movie homages, showroom-worthy, or even some outlandish custom job. It'll help ground your rides with a sense of verisimilitude, which is usually the difference between a GTAO car looking really good, and ...like someone barfed up a Hot Wheels toy...

1. Chrome as a primary color is not an option, I repeat not an option.

2. Never use custom tyres unless your making a dragster or off road lookalike.

3. Never put neon underglow on a classic car (anything from 1976 or before).

4. Never put xenons on a classic car (anything from 1976 or before).

5. Leave the wheels stock. Most of them have a better, more shinier look to them.

6. Don't put the GT wing on small cars.

7. Don't slam super cars completely. Trust me I learned from experience, If you slam cars like the Turismo R you will hit curbs non-stop.

8. Don't just buy something because it's expensive.

9. Do not put dollar rims on any car.

Those are the rules I tend to go by and so far I've only ever got one negative remark on my cars and that was because the exhaust kept backfiring.

However you don't have to go by these at all, the best real advice I can give you is to just be yourself and be tasteful with the mods that you choose and just don't pick anything that doesn't go with that type of car, i.e. whitewalls on supers and massive spoilers on small cars.

Whats wrong with black cars?

Nothing wrong with black if you like the way it looks. "Black is beautiful" as they say.

As a general rule, stay away from anything too extreme or over the top if you care what other people think. If you want a spoiler for example, choose a more subtle one. The extreme options are often polarizing, so you will find a lot of people who will rip on them.

Try to get a theme in your head before you start. As someone mentioned before, making replicas of cars from movies or TV shows is an easy one, or just look online for the cars that the GTA car is based on (if you don't know then you can use one of the wikis) or just search for something general like "muscle car" if you want to customize a Sabre. If you have any family or friends with a vehicle you like maybe try something like how they have theirs set up as a baseline. For example if your cousin has a sedan in a cool metallic gray with some chrome wheels that you like, try doing something similar to your sedan in game and then from there you can change little bits here and there to perfect it.

If you can't think of any theme or idea to get started, just think about how the car makes you feel. Perhaps a Schafter makes you feel like you should have a nice suit on as you are headed to a fancy restaurant, so try colors that might match a fancy suit and keep it classy and don't add huge wings and such. If you treat your Coquette like a race car, then feel free to add some of the "racier" looking options and a brighter paint job. If your Fugitive makes you feel like you should be an undercover cop or something, choose an understated color and don't throw flashy wheels and limo tint on it.

A very important thing too, make sure to drive the car after you customize it! Use it for a while and sometimes your opinion changes. When you use it for a few days of playing you will see it from a lot of angles and at different times of day in different light settings and such. Sometimes you end up wanting different wheels or making your color a little darker or whatever after you have looked at it for a while, and sometimes that bright color ends up being a little too obnoxious. For example, my Coquette was the same for 5 months (metallic black, stock exterior except for the front lip and wheels) and one day I decided to mix things up a bit so I threw a wing on it and changed to some solid black wheels and gloss black paint and tinted the windows and put the skirts on it. At first, I didn't like it and wanted to change it back but after playing nearly all day with it the wing kinda grew on me and I ended up leaving it that way for a month or so.

Just to throw one more tip at you Morbid. If you want a quick opinion, use the 'Rate the Car Above' thread. It isn't the most reliable, but is reliable enough (you will get some temperamental pre-madonnas on it) to gauge what others think (and what you think) of various cars. You don't have to post a comment to get an idea, but if you do, just be honest about the car above your post and contemplate any feed back (if it is from the poster of the car you review, take the feedback with skepticism).
