Suggestion for the piracy problem

First off, there is most likely no way to get rid off piracy completely. The only thing that can be done is to decrease it and make those who profit from it worse off than legal customers.

One way to do this is what Codemasters have used in their games which is a software called FADE. The software is used to detect if a game has been pirated (stolen). If a copy is detected the software will

start to create errors in the disc itself without any notification message. This will cause issues within the game itself. ARMA 2 is one example. Pirated copies may suffer from decreased accuracy for all weapons and vehicles, the controls for vehicle may change. The games graphics may be negatively affected aswell as the games performance. Random sounds may be played. If the player manage to put up with all this, the game will eventually transform the player into a seagull.

A similar software could be introduced into GTA V. Especially considering the fact that online is required in order to register. There are many ways in which pirated copies could give effects in online-gameplay. For example, by making the hit-time for bullets delayed when the player aims and shot at someone, dissapearing cash, small changes in vehicle handling, and so forth. Such a system could also possibly be developed to detect cheaters or those who use glitches and deliberately punish such actions. For example, a software that detects whenever a transfer preceeds the maximum transfer, or, single out if any given amount of cash comes from a legit source (e.i not a glitch). Such a system would be great if many of the effects were not visibly obvious to the player.

Best solution for piracy is releasing better games, developed specifically for pc, not unoptimized console ports delayed over and over again.

no more pc ports would be better.

also pc demos should make a return to the norm. consoles get demos yet pc players have to waste money on games that turn out to be crap only you can't return them because of steam or origin.

consoles have it easy and suffer from piracy just as much. people seem to forget that. plus they get demos for most games.

can't remember the last time I got a demo for a pc game...

what's worse is having to buy a game to get a demo, wtf is that about? *cough* elite dangerous *cough* you buy a game to get the game. the demo should be free.

browser integrated games needs to go away as well, these just games where you are forced to play what the developer wants you to play. i.e. battlefield 3+ no offline mp at all + no mods.

what good is a pc game without mods? no replay value....

all these new limited pc games need to go with missing features that for years have been normal.

match making is rubbish, server browsers should be in all pc mp games. one does not want to spend ages waiting to connect to some random slow ass server.

If you want games to be released for PC in time then I suggest that you all buy the game at its regular price and not rely on steam sales and such, that's why the PC platform isn't very attractive to companies like Rockstar. Rockstar is one of the few studios left that still makes high quality titles and they are the only reason why I still care about gaming.

steam sales don't happen all the time don't last that long, plus it's a good way to get more players on a certain game.

nothing good has every come from pre-ordering or buying a game new at full price in the last few years.

so many console ports and lack of pc demos, betas that can only be got by pre-ordering. day 1 patches, disc locked content or dlc as some moron publishers call it.

most dlc isn't a download is just in the game but get's unlocked if you buy some ultimate deluxe uber special fap edition version for 1hr of extra gameplay!!!!

cheaper & better made games please and no more bullshi*t. sick of dlc. bring back full expansions. make stuff worth the money.

most dlc is rubbish, hats, costumes, weapon skins. sometimes semi decent things like a map or two...

i miss days when one purchased a game, it got some solid patches and then a full blown expansion which released like a 2nd game but it was worth it.

now you buy a stripped down game and dlc trickles in every few months to add stuff back to said game. or you buy a game with locked content and then realise you have to pay usually around 6 quid to unlock stuff that's already in the game or be stupid and buy the whole game repacked as a deluxe version.

I don't think that higher quality PC titles will make a substantial amount of PC players ready to ditch their pirating. Pirating does not occur primary because many PC games suffer in quality, as little as piracy in the music industry happens because the quality of the majority of artists does not live up to the customers expectations. It happens because it's free, practical, and anonymous.

Demos is not required anymore. That may actually scare the customers off if the title doesn't live up to the gamers expectations. That means loss of money. The same goes with modding, where there is a saying that if you let people create their own content and give it away to other gamers for free then there will be no incentive for gamers to buy expensive DLCs or pay for items via microtransactions simply because modding makes it possible to get all this for free - and not only that - modding can offer more quality and quantity than any DLC that a gaming company create and release. This is one of the reasons as to why gaming companies create DLCs that gives the buyer of the DLC benefits: it is to give those who have not bought the DLC a reason to buy it, or, simply play the game knowing that they are worse off than others for not buying the DLC. Now, with all this in mind, creating games that focus on Online makes this wheel keep on rolling either because the singleplayer is not existant or because its watered down.

This reason as to why this is happening is quite simple, and a part from greed: It's because the majority of gamers have voted for this with their wallet. To give an example: if people accepted that Sim City forced people to play online the Singleplayer mode would never have been released at all. Electronic Arts openly told flat out lies claiming that 'it was not possible to implement singleplayer' and a bit later a free-time modder did it. The majority of gamers pay for lously games, for lously DLCs and microtransactions, and gaming companies are just giving players what they buy so much off.

Stop piracy? Ask the devs to charge less for their bullsh*t unoptimized piece of garbage.

Unless you are on rockstars payroll I don't know why there is any reason to GOS about piracy. If you are going to buy the game that should be enough to make you happy.

This post right here is the biggest problem with PC gaming. An owner of crap hardware crying about games being unoptimized.

How can anyone expect V to run on medium settings with the specs in your signature? A Dual Core E5700 3.00Ghz with 4 GB RAM...seriously bro?

Nobody with specs like that intends to purchase a game.

GTAIV had something similar to this. Pirating the game resulted in a "Drunkern Camera" Plays, pirated games can't connect to legit online servers

FADE is stupid. Person who plays for free might think that the game is broken and just get rid of it, surely he won't spend money on it even on sale.

Here's better suggestion! Stop trying to fight windmills and occupy yourselves with something better, like - actually putting some effort into making your games more accessible price-wise and they problem will get semi-fixed! I say semi, because i do realize that it won't eradicate piracy as a whole as there will always be category of people, that won't pay anything even if the game will be very accessible, but it will stop the rate of piracy for sure! The ultimate treat to stop piracy is trying to reason with those, who have to resort to pirate games on the first place! Unless it won't be realized - the story will repeat over and over and over again, until developers eventually realize it!...

Need more PC exclusives... and ofcourse good DRMs.

Piracy can't be wiped out... But it can be reduced.

Its time that the devs. should now pay a little more attention on PC.

Remember, only the pissed off ones pirate the game. :p

Redcued by what?! Defending the game with even more DRM?! LOL now thats ridiculous logic! Its like trying to save someone by killing him...OMG Sometimes if you want to stop someone you have to reason with him/her and understand his motives! By introducing even more DRM you do nothing in your favor, but only annoy and alienate your fanbase! Ask how many of those, who actually BUY all the viudeo games released on PC love the idea of DRMs? ...yeah right...So lets pull of a stupid stunt and make more DRM...NICE! *facepalm*

I never said, "MORE DRM" or "MAKE MORE DRM"..

I simply meant to improve current DRMs...like improving RGSC..or Steam.

Noone likes sh*tty DRMs... neither do i.

20fps isn't playable in my books. so you speak the truth. I know some people can't afford uber pc's, but some peoples complaints are invalid as you say.

some games are unoptimized pieces of crap and run terrible on fast machines. so he was right about one bit.

30fps is minimum for playable but still sucks if you are a real pc gamer. 60fps & above is the normal for decent gaming. Can't have fun on lower than 60fps unless it's non 3d games or your playing with dosbox or some other retro emulator.

There no possible ways to improve DRMs, other than what we have! Steam is easily hacked! And now all glorified so called invincible Denuvo DRM been hacked as well! OMG The new DRM would only mean more people willing to pirate and less willing to buy...there is no ultimate mechanism to fix this! Neither by creating new and powerful DRM protections, nor by simply improving those, which already exist! In the end of the day it doesn't make any difference, it is still a DRM, which everyone hate! LOL Might as well, just give up and realize its not pirates, who developers should fight with, but themselves and their horrible business and marketing models!...If they rummage in their heads and manage to realize it - they will come to a progress and do the right assumptions!

I dont think piracy is a problem TBH. GTA 5 made like $2bn and indie games are thriving thanks to Steam.

A better idea is if game companies just put a message in there games saying if they pirated could you donate X amount to X paypal address for a sequel.

Gamers are much more loyal than ppl give credit for.

The game uses denuvo anti tamper if the rumors are to be believe, aka no first week or maybe even second week crack for the game, keep that in mind. With that said GTA V will be massively bought because of a) respect for the game and b) GTA online

Denuvo denied that rumor a long time back saying they are not involved in any GTA game right now. They were involved during GTAIV's Securom sh*t.

Quite frankly, the games that tend to get pirated the most are the ones with a lot of DRM because people don't want to pay $60 and have to have to deal with it.

No, games that get pirated the most are those that offer bad value on the dollar. for example some 6hr low budg licensed spider man game that costs 50 eur

If they want me to buy a game at full price they should stop trying to sell me poorly ported games that are infected with nasty DRM, have portions of the game stripped out to sell as DLC, and are released on PC after they are already old news on console. The last game I payed full price for was The Witcher 2 and that was only after they removed the DRM from the retail version, it suffered from consolitis but that was the only strike against it once they removed the DRM.

My advice to publishers regarding piracy would be to ignore it, it can't be stopped and anything they do to reduce it will also reduce sales which is counterproductive. They also run the risk of alienating loyal customers when the DRM causes problems, problems that the pirates don't have because the DRM has been stripped from the cracked version.
