I don't know much about computers and such, however I wish to buy a pc for Year 12.

I want YOU to help me on this quest for the search of a great yet cheap laptop. :D

Ooo... Laptop... That binds the options... And best is really subjective... What might be best for someone won't necessarily be best for someone else.

Though, you need to explain your requirements first.

  • What will you be using it for?
    • If games, what games? What resolution/settings would you accept? Are you a "pro gamer" and want something geared towards that or just "casual" and don't need "gamer" features?
    • If work, what type of work? Media editing? Spreadsheets? Programing/VMs?
  • How large can it be?
    • Do you want high portability, even if the tradeoff is price and function?
    • If you don't plan on moving it often, have you thought about a small desktop? Mini-ITX & Micro-ATX can provide good portability while keeping desktop power.
  • Any specific features you want?
    • An SSD for a boot drive?
    • How large should the HDD be?
    • Number/type of USB ports?
    • Other outputs? (VGA, DisplayPort, HDMI...)

I'll be using it for:

  • Just Yr 12 school work and potentiality of University. So spreadsheets and I'll need to install Microsoft Office as I'll need Word.

I won't be using it for games at all

It's size:

  • Portable laptop, it would make it easier for me to do work anywhere.

Specific Features:

Sorry for this poor response

  • SDD? Not sure what that is sorry, but if it's necessary then yes
  • HDD, large enough?
  • 'bout 4 USB ports - the type, USB-A
  • HDMI and VGA

All I can say is, I will be heavily, heavily using it for school work and all that form of information.

An SSD is basically a HDD with no moving parts (uses flash storage). As it isn't limited by the max RPM or a read head it is much faster (3-5 times faster than a normal HDD you'll find in a laptop). Though you generally have to sacrifice one to have the other (in laptops), not to mention the cost per GB is significantly higher.

EDIT: This might help a bit as well

This one only has 3 USB ports (2x USB3, 1x USB2) but should suffice and has a rather good discount (-200$) already applied. Only issue I see is that there is an occasional issue with the Wi-Fi, but there is a way to fix it. Laptop

Wi-Fi fix

Hope this helps you out.

Edit: Links got messed up.

Thanks @TheMcSame. That video gave me a better insight and understanding of an SSD.

Thank you @GG14876, I appreciate your time and effort for helping me find what I need. I'll go and order it now
