Becoming a State Trooper is no easy task. Our recruits endure weeks of training consisting of classroom and field training in the NYSPTA (New York State Police Training Academy. Being professional, keeping a satisfactory attendance with positive attitude are a few of the major components we look for in our State Troopers. Divisions

Patrol Division - Maintaining a professional appearance when interacting with communities.

Troopers are the first responders in many emergency situations after the initial call for assistance.

Providing police protection for residential and commercial environments as well as community involvement.

Traffic Enforcement - Dedicated to keeping New York roadways safe. Detection and apprehension of aggressive drivers and enforcing state motor vehicle and traffic laws.

Motor vehicle accident reconstruction and investigations begin with this division.

With the use of low profile and CITE (Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement) vehicles, enforcing NYS cell phone, and DUI laws.

Bureau Criminal Investigations (B.C.I) - Investigations of narcotics to homicides our BCI unit works round the clock in apprehending New York's Most Wanted.

The bureau takes a offensive approach in crime stopping by establishing stings on narcotics sales and prostitution.

Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T) - This highly trained team of Troopers assist in high profile search warrants, hostage negotiation and rescue, also protection of Political Dignitaries on a local, state, federal levels.

Sub-divisions of S.O.R.T. include: Aviation / Marine / K9

Ranks

Our Ranking System is like none other. We pride ourselves to be professional, with that comes great success within our organization. There are numerous promotional opportunities from Sergeant to Major through competitive and appointive processes for both the Uniformed Force and Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

You may apply to be appointed as an Investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation after 4 weeks of service.

You may compete in the promotional process for the supervisory rank of Sergeant after 6 weeks.

You may compete in the promotional process for the middle management rank of Lieutenant after serving 2 months as a Sergeant.

As any department our promotional process consist of Field Test, along with a written test where the applicant must score 85% or better.

Depending on the amount of slots open, highest score will be chosen.
