Anyone remember The Getaway?

Recommended Posts

Back at around the millenia there was a rivalry between GTA and the Getaway. The latter had vastly superior graphics, although the open world was somewhat lacking in comparison.

Would be great if team Soho came back and gave GTA a run for its money.

I remember watching a friend play it back when it came out. It looked good but had no HUD and you had to check the indicator lights to know which way to go.

I liked how they recreated London and the vehicles of that time period.

It wasn't that bad a game, but I much prefer the 3D era GTA's.

I never played it, but saw many scans of The Getaway: Black Monday in magazines back in 2004 and wanted to try it. Shame I didn't had a PS2 then. The game had licensed cars, so I guess they coudn't make them explode or do crazy things.

EDIT: This should be moved to the gaming subforum.

Black Monday was sh*t IMO. The first one was much better. However I never undersood why it was compared to GTA at the time. It was open world in a sense that LA Noire and Mafia II are. The city provides a backdrop to the story.

I remember when there were talks of The Getaway III, but it got cancelled. Maybe someone might resurrect the I.P one day.

Hell yeah I remember the game, bits and pieces anyway. I remember one particular mission where I had a big shootout with some Jamaican gangsters for instance. The best thing about it though imo, was the setting. The world wasn't grand but it was a nice Getaway (pun intended) from the American settings.

Woah.. What a blast from the past..

I only owned Black Monday. I'm pretty sure the series itself, (in the past I'm implying), was very underrated if I'm not mistaken.

Black Monday was very gritty, the story engrossing and I thought it was great. The English was so well spoken that as an American, it was a little hard to keep up with but not too hard. A very atmospheric world for a PS2 game.

I got to the end, but as Eddy I failed to save a particular party in a previous mission, and I made enemies with an officer you really don't want to be enemies with!

The only issue I really had with the game was that.. They really didn't hold our hand at all. I don't know if the series is notorious for dropping utterly no hints, tips or tutorials, but Black Monday was quite an experience to play blind.

Was a bit before my time (first gta game 2005),but I played the first one and preferred Mafia 1. It is getting a lot of love in this thread, but I lm not a fan. I liked The Godfather 1, it wasn't really a story game but I liked the gameplay.

Admittedly the best elements of the Getaway were the graphics and story. They were very realistic at the time and people were wondering why GTA couldn't look like that. That being said I think GTA's graphics hold up more, as is the case when graphics are more stylized.

It had some really good ideas though. The recovery system (holding the wall whilst Hammond takes a breath) was interesting and the plot (kidnapping your son) actually kind of justifies massacring people.

The lack of a map and radar were huge downfalls though,

I loved The Getaway. It was like GTA with real cars and cool accents. I doubt that they will make a third due to one of the creators of the game went to form Team Bondi and made LA Noire, which is an awesome game.

Excellent game the getaway was. It had a way of pulling you into the environment like no other game I have played. The city, the fact that there was no hud definitely created a unique and enjoyable experience. I would love if they did an HD remake for current and or next gen consoles. That would be awesome. I remember playing free roam in that game for hours on end and being fully submerged in it.

Weren't they making a third one set in Amsterdam or something, or was that just a tech demo?

The Getaway is the GTA London we never got.

Easily one of the best "GTA clones" ever IMHO.

I think that award goes to Saints Row.

A mostly humorless game with an open world as a mission hub does not a GTA game make.

The Getaway is more in league with Mafia.

There was more than just talk, there were two teaser trailers, one of which hinted that it might feature Amsterdam as well. I never played Black Monday, but I had a blast playing the first one & driving around a city I knew quite well (at least I did back then) felt quite surreal. I would buy a new installment on the PS4 in a heartbeat.

Had both The Getaway and The Getaway: Black Monday on PS2, and still do, absolutely loved the games, thought the graphics were excellent for the time they were released. Awesome story, but limited in ways that would restrict it from being "open-world" (much alike to Mafia II, LA Noire, etc).

I also was hoping SOHO continued to make the game and I was upset that the 3rd installmant of the series never made it. I hope it's soon back in development, would love to see what it could be like with the software at their fingertips nowadays.

I played it mostly for the licenced cars.

I remember when it came out and I was just a kid at the time, I watched my friend play it and I wanted the game so badly. I asked my mum if I could have it but she said no. Many years later I found the game and played it (hoping it was still going to be brilliant despite how old the game was) then I compared the graphics to the new era graphics and thought it was completely sh*t  Oh well

Great game for it's time with some pretty challenging missions, good plot, voice acting, and awesome locations, although the lack of free roam really set it back for me in comparison to GTA and that car blinker alone to navigate the city drove me crazy (no pun intended)
