For example, Police Negotiators...

Recommended Posts

Inspired by content of other threads, notably those debating the Police AI in GTAV, I got thinking about what I think would be a neat addition to the wanted stars system. Finding alternative ways for the cops AI behaviour and alternative ways for the player to evade/escape their wanted level.

In other words, something that could break-up the predictability of the traditional escalating stars system whereby cops always seem to spawn from nowhere and adopt the traditional GTA gun-ho approach.

Consider:

1. The player having the option to take hostages. Police back off temporarily, which would assist your escape. If you escape quickly, you gain the advantage, if you take too long then could develop into (2)

2. With hostage, Police surround you but do not fire. Providing you have hostage (which would slow down your escape) player makes in game demands (e.g. tap triangle to demand get-away car etc etc. Can just imagine a police negotiator with megaphone and some R* scripted lines.

3. Police calling off the chase on occasions triggered by fast/reckless driving or simply randomly. In other words, you did little to reduce your stars but you are tagged and if spotted, the stars go back up - a quick car change, clothes change required to completely remove this tag.

There's 3 for now I know they may seem a little far-fetched but I hope you see the spirit of what I feel would be good for a slightly different in game experience.

What do you guys think would be other ways of tweeking the stars system for future GTA titles?

Really like this idea, its a shame you can't take hostages in this game.

Police only have 2 states of mind, kill and kill even faster.

10+ years later and the police AI is still as primitive as ever.

They were pretty good in IV at least. There they actually arrested criminals, rather than just shoot them.

Yes, I forgot to mention that :D

Was playing it a few days ago and it's funny to punch a cab driver's vehicle then him getting arrested when he tries to attack me lol.

I just can't believe R* took away even simple things from the wanted system.

Really stupid decisions.

Other ideas for future GTA's to introduce a better risk reward either before triggering a wanted level or during a wanted level.

Purchase police scanner from Ammunation - better intel on police locations/response times - e.g. when holding up a store. Obviously, don't think of this just for GTA V but for future.

Bribe police - crimes that trigger a one or two star are immune or crimes in certain juristictions - e.g. bribe Blaine County Sheriff means certain crimes results in a blind eye turned. Could even be part of a storyline mission.

Plain clothes detectives and more uniformed police walking the beat.

Random element - police called away to a more serious job. Ie street fight - police turn up then radio'd to a more pressing problem.

Following on from last point, alternative approaches - police approach you for questioning first (crime dependant of course).

What do you think, would be nice for a deeper discussion

How about plain clothes cops walking the beat. That would introduce an element of suspense. Additionally they would dress in similar ways to the pedestrians around you.

@ PhillBellic - yep, spot on there, that's exactly my vision. Instead of protagonist following peds, would be nice to have undercover cops following protagonist, that way adds an extra interesting element to game. Any more ideas?

Really like these ideas, especially the bribing and questioning ones. On the radio it says "assault occurred" or something like that and when you become visible to police they just automatically spot you without anyone actually informing the police what you look like, it's just GTA logic

American Viking

I'd just be happy if they'd fix the existing problems. Psychic cops, super cops with pin point accuracy, cops who can ram you like a mac truck regardless of what, where, and how fast you are driving, and cops that shoot to kill always. To add, I'd like to see cops choose more non lethal alternatives like the stun gun, using their batons, tackling the player in a foot chase. And bring back arrest for NPCs.

As far as your points go, a hostage system would be neat but negotiators and all that is wasted time, effort, and money that could be spent fixing existing problems.
