how does it work in comparison to player level?

i was with IGN and reached 182 then changed to a new crew and my crew rank changed to 120. i was expecting to be 1

i joined another crew today and after one mission (LS connection with only 2 of us in different crews) i jumped from 1 to 4

 

is it purely RP or is there more to it?

You go up ranks in your crew the more RP you gain while representing them.

If you go to social club website and log in and go to your crew page on gta section it gives your position in the crew and exactly how many rp each player has earned , I battled my way all the way up to 2nd highest and was almost catching top player I then swapped to x box 1 and to my horror you start again at the beggining

Most crew stats especially rp is bugged. Everytime someone creates a second character their crew stats almost double on social club.
