Knocked over by shots, but not killed

Something rather weird happened to me just now. I was in a solo session and jumped out of plane I'd taken from the airport. I landed on some building site that had a tower with a domed top. I decided to climb up the tower using the series of ladders, and when I approached the top I could hear cops shouting and firing at me.

 

Anyway, I was at the top returning fire (in 1st person), and everytime a bullet hit the tower near me, there'd be this loud hissing noise like gas was escaping from where the cops bullets were landing. Each time this happened I'd fall to the floor and then get back up.

 

Eventually, enough bullets hit their target (me) and I died, but does anyone have any idea what was happening when the bullets were hitting the tower near me and making me collapse?

 

If, as I suspect, I was becoming overpowered by the gas escaping from the bullet holes in the tower, it's yet another example of the incredible attention to detail Rockstar have put into this game,
