You're full of sh*t @sivispacem dodging the question of how the EU Parliament is a different style of democracy to the Supreme Soviet.

I haven't dodged the question, I answered it above. Notwithstanding it being your responsibility to demonstrate how they're identical rather than mine to price they're not, it's an assertion that doesn't stand up to the slightest technical scrutiny.

The only fundamental similarly is that both are legislatures.

How their members are elected is completely different; the Supreme Soviet was a closed elective system without universal suffrage, a single political party and centrally decided member lists. In practical terms it was not really an elected assembly as the election process was non competitive. Compare and contrast with the European Parliament where suffrage is universal, member states have full control over the electoral system, and anyone can run for election in any political platform they wish. That a significant proportion of the UK's delegation to the EU were inherently opposed to our membership of it proves without doubt that it is nothing like the Supreme Soviet.

The practical powers of each are different; most notably the powers of the European Parliament to alter and block legislation. Unlike the Supreme Soviet the European Parliament has the power to block legislative agendas entirely. The Supreme Soviet had no practical lawmaking powers at all; though the EP requires that legislation is drafted via the Comission it typically acts as the originator of that legislative agenda via its variety of subcommittees. Therefore the European Parliament maintains de facto control of the legislative agenda, something that cannot be said for the Supreme Soviet.

The Supreme Soviets had no role in determining foreign policy, which was centrally managed by the politburo and seldom subjected to any oversight. The EUs foreign policy agenda is controlled at the discretion of the Parliament. The parliament also exercises a de facto veto on all matters of European integration which are require to gain the ascent of all member states unanimously; most members make it their policy that the parliamentary consensus defines how they vote on legislation.

The European Parliament has full de jure control of the budgetry agenda. The Supreme Soviet had no budgetry control at all.

The Supreme Soviet had no say in membership of the politburo, which was decided by the Central Committee in a closed process. Not only does the European Parliament have effective control over the membership of the commission, it also has the ability to censure the Comission which the mere suggestion of has resulted in a commission resigning.

I could go on, and on, but given you're almost definitely going to ignore this whole post I really can't be bothered. Know that if you do, though, I will arbitrarily ban you for a period of my choosing.

Your whole argument is Brexit's based on lies or that Brexiteers like Nigel Farage are wrong.

You say it so much, but you don't offer any evidence to counter.

Where is your proof?

There aren't even any videos or people supporting your claims, and you just accuse those who counter as lies or wrong.

A swathe of EU policies are decided by weighted-majority votes, such as environment, agriculture and transport. However more sensitive policies, including tax, defence and foreign policy, have to be agreed by unanimity.

Under QMV, a law passes if it is backed by 16 out of 28 countries that make up at least 65% of the EU population. The UK had 13% of the EU population, so it received a 13% vote share.

Research by the London School of Economics found that the UK was on the winning side 87% of the time between 2009-15.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/datablog/2015/nov/02/is-uk-winner-or-loser-european-council

So yes on rare occasions, the British government was forced to accept rules that it did not vote for. These however were never major policy and of those that were high-profile losses in recent years, was when then chancellor George Osborne was outvoted on an EU law to restrict bankers bonuses.

https://www.ft.com/content/12d1ba3a-7094-11e4-9129-00144feabdc0

So why would you a self-confessed labourer care about that?

And if one third of national parliaments oppose a draft law, the commission must review it, a procedure known as the yellow card. If more than half of national parliaments oppose a law, this could force a vote in the European parliament or council aka the orange card.

The Yellow Card was used twice while the UK was a member of the EU and the orange card was never used.

Though according to you that is akin to a Soviet dictatorship.

Evidence of how the EU's institutions actually work? What an illusive beast. Not like they're described in detail on the EU website or anything.

What I've outlined is categorical fact. I can quite gladly cite every single individual statement, though that link covers a good 70% of the material.

Well, all the EU facts in the world aren't going to make UK a member of the club when UK left the EU after voting to leave.

Only a fool would want to remain under  EU rule without being in the EU.

It's the rebuttal of all rebuttals - that no matter what you say about the EU, UK have left;

You could call it the greatest thing since sliced bread, you could call it the most democratic thing on the planet (it doesn't matter); we're not in the EU anyway.

It's the one thing you can't argue or deny; that UK have left the EU.

And secondly, it's totally relevant that it's pointless to argue if the EU's democratic (which it's not) because no matter what ever pro EU mumbojumbo you can come up with, it's N/A to the UK; therefore, it's pointless to argue about the EU being democratic as it means nothing to the UK (thank God).

And it's still in dire need of reformation before it's democratic enough.

You know it, I know it, and to believe otherwise is to settle for less, which is exactly why the majority of the EU are loser countries made up of those who only could dream of freedom until the 1990's and settled for the first thing going.

All I'm asking for is for you to engage with the discussion rather than spamming the thread, and forum, up with inane bollocks and hurling insults at everyone.

I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation for a subform entitled "debates and discussion".

The UK leaving the EU does not make the discussion irrelevant. The EU doesn't simply cease to exist because the UK decides to leave.

Eleven of the 27 EU member states were previously either part of the USSR or under Warsaw Pact aligned governments.

Perhaps a maths GCSE would have served you better than a Japanese one, because 11/27 is not "a majority".

You've made zero attempt at a rebuttal, just gone down the big baby route and tried hurling insults at all and sundry.  If your rebuttal was 'f*ck you,' I hope the lucky number refers to weeks, maybe even years.

No matter how far you hope to distance yourself from the EU, it's always going to be lurking there in the background, because the vast majority of producers and exporters around the world, produce all their good to the EU standards, since they're among the toughest in the world and it's unfeasible economically to run more than one production line for goods.  It's just what safety and quality stamps they attach to the end product.

And let's not forget the vast majority of the perishable imports will still be coming from the EU, because as I showed you before, the travel time is just too long for fruit and veg to come from your 'supposed allies.'

And it's still in dire need of reformation before it's democratic enough.

You know it, I know it, and to believe otherwise is to settle for less, which is exactly why the majority of the EU are loser countries made up of those who only could dream of freedom until the 1990's and settled for the first thing going.

Let's not look at Westminster, eh?  If democracy doesn't exist in the EU, the Commons is a complete sh*t show where unrealistic majorities appear all the time.  The 'return' today, as wanted by the Right Honourable Member for the 19th Century, is a plain example of democracy in action, especially for those MP's that are still shielding themselves and have doctors warning them to not return to the Commons.

Jacob just wants Boris to have some jeers behind him at PMQ's.  Sir Keir is currently dismembering him every week.

Offer something to make a rebuttal about, or educate yourself about those institutions, either would be a benefit to all of us, including yourself.

Why should people in the UK accept the EU with sh*t like ECOFIN in it that no one's heard of?!

That was the question, not how much you earn or what you think of poor people.

If the question was, how much do you earn, and what's your opinion on the poor, then your brain fart there wouldn't have been so stupid, but as it stands, was the stupidest rebuttal in history, and you think you have skills in debate; Dunning-Kruger 101.
