Bottom line: racism is stupid; black people could be referred to as black, white people could be referred to as white; but on official documents in the U.S, a black person signs off as "African American", so those who are complaining, get over it.

The term African-American was coined when racial oppression was still being overcome, but IMO, all black Americans lost the ability to play the race card when we elected and re-elected a black president, the top-grossing performers are mostly black, highest paid athletes are mostly black, and there is even a sitcom on national TV called 'Black-ish'.

 

Why are people so afraid to talk about race? If something is race-based, i.e. the legacy of Jim Crow laws, then I don't believe there's any way to avoid mentioning race. I'm not claiming people don't get racial issues and socioeconomic issues confused at times, but if you think isolated incidents of progress means everything is hunky-dory, then you are seriously out of touch.

 

 

I'm all for equality, what I'm not for is furthering a racial divide by pre-fixes in front of the word American....among other things. People are people, everyone is the same biologically, skin pigment means nothing.

 

 

While that may be scientifically true, it isn't when thinking about it from a sociological perspective. If it were true, we wouldn't be having the problems we're having now. All of this racial tension has been just under the surface for a long time and now it's boiling over. There always has been two Americas (USAs): us vs them, oppressed vs oppressor, minority vs majority, whatever you want to call it. And frankly I believe there's too much history to ever completely fix it.
