By Nov., 2001, many of us had registered here, then at the URL gta3forums.net, in anticipation of a bona fide release date of 9 Nov. tank started this forum, and by my hope probably lives today off its proceeds. When the game finally came out Nov. 8, 2001, the server here crashed. Prior, there had been around 30 members -- when it got back up, immediately there were 100. It now mattered the day you registered: Nov. 8 or before, you were human; Nov. 9 or later, you were filth. By December, 2001, the distinction depended on month. By 2002, it depended on year. That year, a moderator on the forum committed suicide. I can't even remember his name, which is bullsh*t, because these forums were huge in the end of his life. Some of his closest contacts at this point had been his online friends. There were no social media at that time -- your internet friends were almost always across the world. That's pretty deep, and I see it the same way. When I have nowhere else to go and I feel like complete sh*t I come here to feel less alone and hopeless. Not everyone can do that most peoples problems on here are of a social nature so talking to people 'outside' is not easy. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell this thread is about.
