BreakdowN_07
An Idaho nuclear research scientist who had taken her young relatives to Wal-Mart to spend their holiday gift cards was killed Tuesday when her 2-year-old son pulled a loaded pistol from her purse and shot her. Deputies who responded found Veronica Rutledge, 29, dead in the Hayden store's electronics department in what Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman Stu Miller described as a "tragic accident." Rutledge, who worked at the Idaho National Laboratory, was from Blackfoot in southeastern Idaho, and her family had come to the area to visit relatives. Rutledge had a concealed weapons permit. Miller said the young boy was left in a shopping cart, reached into his mother's purse and grabbed a small-caliber handgun, which discharged once. The victim's father-in-law, Terry Rutledge, told The Associated Press that Veronica Rutledge "was a beautiful, young, loving mother." "She was not the least bit irresponsible," Terry Rutledge said. "She was taken much too soon." Miller said Rutledge's husband arrived shortly after the shooting. All the children were taken to a relative's house. The store was closed so that detectives could interview witnesses and was not scheduled to reopen until Wednesday morning. Brooke Buchanan, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, said in a statement the shooting was a "very sad and tragic accident." "We are working closely with the local sheriff's department while they investigate what happened," Buchanan said. Idaho law allows concealed weapons in most public places except courthouses, prisons, K-12 schools and juvenile detention facilities. Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Mullins told the Spokesman-Review newspaper that the company's policy on carrying guns into stores is to defer to state and local laws pertaining to carrying firearms in public. Hayden is a town of about 9,000 people just north of Coeur d'Alene and approximately 40 miles north of Spokane, Wash. in Idaho's northern panhandle. There do not appear to be reliable national statistics about the number of accidental fatalities involving children handling guns. In neighboring Washington state, a 3-year-old boy was seriously injured in November when he accidentally shot himself in the face in a home in Lake Stevens, about 30 miles north of Seattle. In April, a 2-year-old boy apparently shot and killed his 11-year-old sister while they and their siblings played with a gun inside a Philadelphia home. Authorities said the gun was believed to have been brought into the home by the mother's boyfriend. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/12/31/woman-accidentally-shot-and-killed-by-2-year-old-in-walmart/

Kirsty
was killed Tuesday when her 2-year-old son pulled a loaded pistol from her purse "She was not the least bit irresponsible," Terry Rutledge said. "She was taken much too soon." Terribly sad she died, perhaps even worse for her poor son that will grow up without a mother and then learn of the story of what he did. He obviously wouldn't have realised and may not have a proper memory of it, but it's an awful situation for her family. Can't help but notice these two parts of the story though. Not going to get into the actual gun debate, but the whole scenario in general seems like utter negligence on her part. Durden and k33g

Mr. House
Murder is a specific term showing intent. I severely doubt the two year old had intent and i'm pretty sure anyone qualified to say so would suggest that two year olds can not have intent for killing. a20characterusername, Gay Tony, Tyler and 4 others
Femme Fatale
It's really sad that this happened. I feel really bad for the kid especially. He'll grow up without a mom, and probably will have the truth kept from him. If he learns what he did, I don't think he'd be able to cope with it. It's such a shame. You smell that? Smells like a future suicide...
TheGodDamnMaster
Why leave the purse in the shopping cart if there's a loaded weapon in it? I know that if I had small children with me I would be sure to make a conscious effort to keep it from their grasp at all times. Still, very sad. Can't imagine what kind of hell the kid is going to go through as he gets older and realizes what he did. I'm not blaming him, after all he's a toddler, but I'd feel a lot of guilt if I ever found out the truth. Dottie
If there is some fault on her side, it would realistically be with the purse (which was probably either open or able to be opened easily by the child) she had the pistol in or the pistol (probably) not having the safety on anywho, this is a tragic event and really sad to hear, especially at the end of 2014 (beginning of 2015 for some) Edited January 1, 2015 by Winning001
TECHN9CiAN
Thats horrible. They say something bad always happens at WalMart. But this shouldnt have. Hope nobody tells the 2year old what happened as he grows. He deserves to live without knowing this as it wasnt his fault mommy left him and a purse containing a loaded gun off safety. No gun law is gonna prevent an individual's stupidity, as supermom's over here. I have guns and so does everyone in my immidiate family, and we all know how to use them (except my daughter, for obvious reasons). This woman who got shot should have known better than to leave a loaded gun off safety in an accessable purse by her 2 year old. That type of stupidity cant be prevented by stricter gun laws. a20characterusername
Americas 2nd Amendment "Right To Bear Arms" but the conceal carry permit should be a lot harder to get than taking a gun safety class and interview In theory, I agree. In practice, not so much. For all the stuff I hear about how guns should be banned and how it should be made more difficult to obtain a CCW permit-- I see it as more of an issue of personal responsibility and common sense than anyhing else. The woman in the story should have known to keep her firearm on her person, rather than leaving it in a purse. Did she even have the safety on? I live in NH, where gun laws are practicially non-existent; instead it's the norm here to raise children knowing what guns are and the potential damage they can cause. "Satety first" is what we practice here. We keep our guns locked up or on our person where nobody but the individual carrying it can access it. Too many people in this country, including adults, treat firearms as toys or simply get careless and I don't think any set of laws will address a lack of common sense or poor decision making. Tchuck
Some people are just born bad. This kid is one of them. Lock him up. No, really, gross negligence by the mother to leave a loaded gun in reach of her toddler. Go ahead and carry your weapon, but make sure it's properly guarded. Kids have little prying fingers that will discover anything, and won't have an idea of what a gun is, or that it can effectively kill people. A fatality, but the mother is to blame for the actions. Too bad. a20characterusername
