The Dedito Gae
first of all, i been playing gta since VC (or gta 2 if you want to get technical) i'm not a guy that spends all his life playing videogames ,i tried to play VC in those old interent cafes, couldn't appreciate too much due my age or being unable to save my game, so keep that in mind before you judge me. 2010 was the year, i remember buying the EFLC edition, saw that it had 3 games (groovy) and decided to start with TBOGT because the name catch my attention, i played it,had a blast, ended it, just some mindless entertainment, just like i remembered gud ol gta, some exciting/dumb missions, kewl weapons and the next gen marvels that came with it such as: flawless shooting mechanics, a great driving,my first time with videogame phisics (i remember spending hours pushing people of stairs or onto the train with Luisina) awesome graphics and the best map i ever saw on a game (LC is still unbeaten in my book) decided to start the big daddy of all, IV, i heard negative comments on the internet, saying that it was boring, forgettable, dark, depresive and the car handling was sh*t (most of the critics have been proved wrong at that point)... i did not see that one coming. the change of tone was mind blowing, the history, the characters, the gritty feel that was added the city,Niko's hiper realistic personality, the everything. each day i came from work excited to turn on the ps3 and see what next job Niko will get into and how the history will turn out, i don't remember having been so excited for playing a game before (i always considered SA overrated, never could really get into it) i had been betrayed by Dimitri, did a heist with two lovable irish junkies, stole drug from an abandoned hospital full of gang members, disposed of the dead bodies of two guys (one who i never thought it would die) choosed who to kill between two main characters and owned Chubby Charlie. then one day, i killed Dimitri, Kate died and i made Jimmy eat lead, that's it. i ended the game. i've never had such a feeling of emptiness when completing a game, i felt like such a nerd, i got upset over a videogame ending, i didn't wanted to end, i just..uhmm..can't explain it to you or my shrink, sadness would be a hard word. but an accurate word ohh, my confession is that i never took too seriously the gta series until IV, there i said it, i just wanted to take this off my chest. The Dedito Gae
i couldn't never appreciate the history behind SA and the character of CJ , the betrayal of Ryder and Big Smoke impressed me but that's all, i never thought of gta as a history driven game until IV,now having replayed the 3D era games, they are pretty good for what they are, this game made appreciate the series much more and it give me a reason to revisit and appreciate the older ones. thanks to IV i replayed Vice City and 3 for the first time (i was way to poor to play it when it first came out) and it's amazing i never thought of buying those games before when owning my first ps2. AuSsIeThUnDeR36
That's what Rockstar Games wanted in IV. It's about an immigrant, moves to LC, gets involved in his cousins crap, ends up working for some pretty crooked criminals and finally ends up getting revenge against the antagonist. The Land of Opportunity was not all that it was cracked up to be I guess for Niko. In one way it's great that he was rid of his betrayers but in the end someone had to die in order to get there, which for Niko would have brought back the memories of the war. He had hoped to start a new life in LC, just not in this way. Yes the ending is kind of depressing, it was the way the script was written, the way R* portrayed an ex soldier, hoping for a better life and discovering he was just reliving his past, more problems than what he imagined. Uncle Vlad
It was pretty much the same for me. I remember I needed 4 attempts till I completed the game for the first time. The three attempts before I played till the end of the game was near, but somehow...I didn´t want it to end...so each time I started all over again. American Viking
It's bad that GTA IV was your first GTA game because you missed out on the "wow" factor going from San Andreas to IV. It's still there if you go back and play the old games but it's not the same. My first GTA was the original but I didn't finish it. I bounced around to games like The Getaway and True Crime before returning to GTA 3. GTA 3 was a good game for the time, Vice City was good as well but I think people who praise it as the best stared into too many Vice City neon lights, San Andreas was another good one, but GTA IV is what made the Grand Theft Auto series more than just your open world shoot em up. The gameplay was drastically improved but it's the story that really sold it. A story worthy of a blockbuster movie. It's hard for me to say that GTA IV's story was better than RDR's story, but it was definitely on par. I dare say that GTA IV is the reason alot of us guys complain about the lack of realism in V. GTA IV did it and did it well.

Algonquin Assassin
I've been a GTA fan since 98 and I pretty much fell in love with GTA IV the first time I played it. I didn't need time to warm up to it quite frankly. Too bad GTA V hasn't been able to achieve that. It might take years for me to really warm up to it. If at all. My first post of the new year. Happy new year everyone. Payne Killer, The Dedito Gae and American Viking
lilchris131
The first GTA I played was San Andreas, but only at a friends house because I wasn't allowed 18 games. I first played GTA IV when I was 13 - I was finally allowed 18 rated games after begging my parents. I remember when I first got it I just messed around and got bored of the story quickly after meeting Little Jacob. Then I didn't really play it for months, but one day I decided to give it another go and actually got into the story, after killing Vlad the story got interesting and after that I played it constantly until I completed the game. I remember trying to keep to "realism" by not really getting into big shootouts on my first playthrough (although even when I died I never reloaded the game, just used the replay option, now I always reload if I die). Nowadays I still playthrough the story but mostly realistic playthroughs. Edited January 2, 2015 by lilchris131 The Dedito Gae

RASPY
I had that same empty feeling after IV but SA was a milestone for me, especially at that age. The betrayal and the friendships forged were amazing. It's sad that you only started at IV. I started from Grand Theft Auto and played every single one in order. The experience has been amazing. Returning to St. Mark's Bistro was too emotional. You've definitely missed out, friend. Edited January 2, 2015 by Raspy
PhillBellic
It took me a short while to warm up to IV completely, however after that I have never looked back. GTA IV will always have a very special place in my heart. Payne Killer, don ovdi' island and RASPY
Algonquin Assassin
See the thing is before GTA IV released I knew I'd end up loving it just from watching the trailers and such. There are things here and there I don't like or I feel could've been done better, but what game doesn't provoke those feelings? With GTA IV I had no issue adapting to the new physics, driving, movement etc. It was all a welcome change from that stagnation of the 3D era in this regard IMO. donnits, RASPY, Vice City criminal and 2 others
GTA_dog
I agree with the main post about IV's story giving off a sensation of a gritty, deep, vibe compared to the 3D era games. Before IV came out, I was through III, VC, SA, and LCS (had trouble with VCS) story lines, but after playing through IV, there was a stronger connection to Niko and the city than any other GTA game I've played. Even compared to V, everything in IV just goes together perfectly. IV feels like everything was intended for some purpose in the city. If that doesn't make sense, IV pulled me into the story deeper than any other GTA game did and I actually looked forward to playing the missions for the story. After beating the game, I still felt like Niko going through his own story while trying to reach 100% (still stuck on 98% from two flying rats after 6 years). woggleman
I didn't play IV until 2011 but I heard all the negative things since release. When I finally played it I fell in love with it and realized most people don't know what they are talking about.
