helpplease
I haven't played 5 yet but here is my thoughts: GTA 4 was a really well made game. The physics, controls etc are all vastly superior to the PS2 generation. Yet GTA 4 lacked something. Maybe we are getting jaded by open worlds but IMO GTA lacks the VC factor. Now I am not a complete VC fanboy in that I recognize that the controls are out of date and the lack of checkpoints are annoying. However, GTA Vice City is what really kicked off the GTA series. GTA 3 gets acclaim but it was not a hit. IMO as good as the graphics were in 4 and improved gameplay it lacked the atmosphere and epicness of VC. VC had a great theme which was reinforced by the colourful- fast cars of VC, the radio and characters. GTA 4 is a very good game but IMO VC is the only game of the entire series which I thought they captured the right atmosphere. quejki and Ninja_Gear

Frantz Fuchs
V is an excellent game but I agree that it doesn't have the GTA atmosphere. I can't describe it but for those of you who remember the feeling you got when you first played Vice City, that. That was magical. Maybe it's because there was nothing of its kind then and I'm used to more 3rd person games now. aj_sff4949

MrDeSanta
Well i`d say that VC and SA were the most original and unique GTA games but far from being the best. Of course no GTA ever will beat that originality but that doesn`t mean they aren`t good. Sure IV and V felt little derailed compare to VC and SA but sometimes the changes are welcome. You can`t have new GTAs that are clones of the old ones. Every atmosphere is unique. Saying that only VC was a good GTA makes no sense. Flesh-n-Bone
The next/new generation GTAs don't feel like the classic GTAs from PS2 because it's a different time and things have changed. I don't really mind it because cartoony graphics on PS4/Xbox1 would look silly in this day and age. And R* is trying to make money so it has to appeal to the shallow casuals that only care about graphics. I'd consider every GTA "great" in their own way. Well, thank you for making a new thread and sharing your opinions with us. I'm sure we're all better for it. Couldn't help but hear "Well, thank yoooooooou, cowboy!" in my head. DaWiesel
Well i`d say that VC and SA were the most original and unique GTA games but far from being the best. VC IMO was definitely not original, especially not story-wise which was heavily based on Scarface, but it's still an awesome game. When it comes to the storyline, IV and V are actually more original than VC and SA, but that still doesn't mean that it has to be good. V's story was pretty good for me but not on the level of IV. However I agree that VC had the best atmosphere of all 3D era games, although IV and V captured the atmosphere of their real life counterparts much more better IMO. V had a special feeling for literally the first two days then it dissolved. If V was actually a good game it may have had more of a lasting affect but no video game really impresses me anymore. Uh, I didn't play IV until I was 19. III through SA are the only GTA titles with nostalgia for me. I think V is the best game since III with the best qualities from Vice City and San Andreas combined.

These two do it the best as far as I'm concerned. GTA_dog

There was too much hand holding at the beginning and the city, although nice and well designed, didn't really have anything special. Also, the destruction physics are meh. You can blow up cars alright but the buildings themselves no. GTA 3 gets acclaim but it was not a hit. Ezza.
So Only VC felt like a true GTA? Maybe all the other games felt like GTA and VC was just the odd one out? Vice City criminal
Not Really, that's just your opinion. In the same way I could say GTA 4 was the best because the rest lack realism and a better story. However, GTA Vice City is what really kicked off the GTA series. GTA 3 gets acclaim but it was not a hit. No. Almost every GTA was a hit more or less. Blingy

GTA 3 had far more detail than VC yet VC is just better in every way. I think the modern day themes get tiresome and so VC stands out. Its the 80's music, the scarface storyline, the colourful city. The game was designed for fun. It is the odd one out in that regard.

helpplease
So you prefer the theme of VC, therefore it is superior? Thats a very simplistic way of putting it, when you consider it includes art style and sound. Also, the destruction physics are meh. You can blow up cars alright but the buildings themselves no. unlike every other gta where you can destroy buildings. Right but this was 2008. It actually goes back to what I said about San Andreas in another thread about choices being cosmetic. Why bother putting in mini games like arcade games etc when the actual destruction effects are crap? I remember Red Faction when it came out you could literally blast threw walls, getting to places you shouldn't. It still feels way too modern and rather recent even though it's nearly 7 years now since it came out. And I was still 14 when that game came out.
