Do NAT types make a difference in GTA Online?

I recently found out that I have the dreaded strict NAT type, and I suspect that may be why I keep getting so many empty lobbies. I've been trying to get an open NAT type. Will there be a noticeable difference with an open NAT type? Or will I still keep getting hit with empty lobbies, unknown network errors, etc.?

I do not think... I have a NAT Type 1 and I still get error messages such as you mention them 'Unknown Network Error' but you can try to enable DMZ for your console or open your ports manually in the settings of your router.

RussianCommie

My NAT is set to open and the amount of empty public lobbies that I find is ridiculous.

if you were able to play with people before moving to newgen, you shouldnt have to mess with your NAT...

btw your cars are not ugly, i see you as the szabolcs veres of gta car customization

For the people not getting what 'szabolcs veres' means. It means 'grotesk cancerous eyesore'

NAT types and what they mean --

NAT Types:

  1. Open
  2. Moderate
  3. Strict
  • Open NATs can connect to any of the three types. --> Probably the least common type
  • Moderate can only connect to open and moderate. --> Probably the most common type
  • Strict can ONLY connect to open.

Strict NATs are a difficult problem with peer-to-peer games. Since most people don't have open NATs, the player with a strict NAT won't be able to find many joinable games.

Also, if the player with a strict NAT does manage to join a game, if another player with a moderate NAT joins later, the player with the strict NAT gets kicked out.

Thread solved.
