Fonz
So, at the suggestion of Marwin Moody, I decided to make this thread to unite guitar and bass players in musical discussions. Share your musical influences, heroes, how long you've been playing and the styles you tend to play. I'll start: I've been playing for around 11 years and I'm drawn to jazz, fusion, blues, classical, rock, metal, some bossa nova, some indian styles, prog rock and and country. I try to keep my playing varied, so I switch up the styles often, to avoid getting bored of a specific one. Too many heroes to list, but here are a few: Joe Satriani, Marty Friedman, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Pass, Lenny Breau, Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Andy Timmons, Robert Cray, Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, David Gilmour, Albert King, Eric Johnson, Gonçalo Pereira, Larry Carlton, Charlie Christian, John Williams, Julian Bream, Django Reinhardt, Carlos Paredes, Baden Powell, Joe Cocker, Jim Morrison, Alan Parsons, The Doobie Brothers, The Beatles, Paul Mccartney (solo and with Wings), George Harrison (solo), Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, Syd Barret (w/ PF and solo) etc. Your turn Edited December 30, 2014 by Black_MiD mr quick
mr quick
I am so glad that you came along. Is this different enough from the new guitar topic: http://gtaforums.com/topic/267797-the-new-guitar-topic/to sustain? Time will tell. If you like Joe Pass, you'll love Jake Reichbart (youtube). If you like fusion guitar, try Featuring Robben Ford on guitar. The guitar "kicks in" at 0:45, and he has a nice solo following that. More guitar at 2:10. He goes absolutely astronomical at 2:20. My guitar heroes are George Benson and Larry Carlton among others, but the absolute idol is Lee Ritenour. What an ace, making a name for himself as a Jazz guitarist(even getting a signature Gibson L5 which is OBSCENELY expensive), yet making several pop records as well as appearing on rock records such as Pink Floyd's "The Wall". What an absolute ace. Speaking of bass, check the sound this guy has(if you can tear yourself away from the mesmerizing vocalist): Edited December 30, 2014 by Marwin Moody Mister Pink

Fonz
Don't feel bad. It's more dead than [politically incorrect joke] Anne Frank? Aw, that joke is just not Reich BTW, we seem to have lots of guitar heroes in common! I absolutely love Lee Ritenour, Robben Ford and Larry Carlton! Have you heard Larry and Robben jamming in one of Larry's DVDs (can't recall the name)? Fantastic jam Those guys in the video are amazing! Incredibly groovy, smooth ass guitar, controlled drums, and the vocalist is fantastic (quite easy on the eyes, too )! What type of player are you, Marwin? From your interest in jazz, I guess you're really into improv, right? I guess I'm the technical breed of guitar player, although I appreciate anything I find inspiring. Sadly, I do get caught up in "guitar wanking" (the usual autopilot arpeggios, scales, string-skipping etc. routine) sometimes Edited December 31, 2014 by Black_MiD mr quick
mr quick
As do I. I actually saw Carlton at a masterclass he held at the conservatory downtown. Very intimate. Cool guy. Myself, I like hard bop and modal jazz. I like playing standards and trying different techniques and styles. I do try to remain somewhat trained in all areas though, as I more often than not have to play something I wouldn't on my own (studio gigs for example). I am technically inclined. I'm familiar with all the modal scales, though I mostly rely on dorian, mixolydian, lydian, aeolian(natural minor) and ionian(major) during improvisation. I love comping in funk and pop. Check out this video of Larry & Lee, the latter makes the guitar absolutely scream in his solo: Another cool Lee Live vid, featuring Abe Laboriel's eminent bassing: Edited December 30, 2014 by Marwin Moody Fonz
Fonz
You saw Carlton live? Man, I'd kill to see him! That performance of Room 335 is superb! One of the best for sure, right up there with the Carlton/Lukather version (the one with the long intro solo). Oh, and that one where he plays it on a sunburst Strat; it's one of the more "shreddy" versions of it… On the subject of modal scales, Lydian and Mixolydian have always been my favourites! Lydian has that beautiful, dreamy sound because of the sharp 4th. Mixolydian is just pure, raw, bluesy fun, man I remember listening to Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream and being blown away by that mysterious sound. mr quick
Where have you been all my life? e: I dabble in lochrian modes from time to time. A lot of jazz tunes have turnarounds based on m7b5. Edited December 30, 2014 by Marwin Moody Fonz
Fonz
I'm glad we met, man! Most of my guitar-playing friends don't really care about this stuff or they get stuck in the strumming part. Not that there's anything wrong with that type of playing, but… The only advanced players I can play/discuss with are my brother and father. It's cool to see someone like you keeping the six-string spirit alive, especially considering you play GTA as well mr quick
ilovebender.com
http://gtaforums.com/topic/530632-the-forum-musicians-commune/?view=getlastpost But hey since we got this... I am a man who loves his 1996 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Standard Red Sparkle Top Dark Back that the only thing I had done to it was have a set of Seymour Duncan APH-1 Alnico II Pro Humbuckers put in. resevil2008
Well, I already posted in the other thread. But I'll spam my covers one more time. Only influence I have besides myself is Mark Tremonti, I had a professional teach me the basics for a year or two and from then on I just learnt to play by myself, admiring no particular guitarrist, until I listened to Tremonti. Then I started shredding. I've been playing for around 7 years, and my favorite guitar right now is my newest one; a PRS SE Tremonti Custom. Here go my covers; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RuEofgBLM0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p78n4gNCLCE This last one won't appear for some reason https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG-504FkSu8 Use your pinkie, it'll do you a lot of favors. mr quick
Sound advice. Use the 4th finger. Smaller right-hand movements, maybe a Jazz III pick?
