The game version is a bit blurry but look at the concept design by Ray Larabie. http://gta.wikia.com/GT-A1 You see the tube thing in the back? I think GT-A1 was designed to be powered by a jet engine. That would explain the greatest speed of all cars as well as the funky handling characteristics.
