Crossed
I have a 2000 grand am se, 4 cylinder. Me an the misses wanted to go on a romantic gravel road smoke a joint drive. Well I went exploring ended up sucked into a ditch (when road says not maintained and its wet an muddy an no 4x4, avoid!) So my dumbass had to pay 100 bucks to get towed out of this mud mess.So anyways now my car violently shakes when going over 45 mph. Everything's normal till going over 45. I washed a lot of the mud out but its dark so I still need to proper car wash it tommorrow cause I was told all that mud behind the wheels and on everything maybe causing this. Or the tires are now super unbalanced, or a wheel bearing or worse....I don't know help. I'm dumb. 79'Blazer4x4
My guess would be a wheel bearing. I've had 2 of them go, one made my truck vibrate like crazy and the other made a horrible grinding noise at higher speeds. Jack up your vehicle and try wiggling the wheels, if you can wiggle them you need new bearings. On some vehicles you can't replace just the bearing and need a whole new hub assembly though. On my truck it cost around $200 for a hub assembly but on a smaller vehicle it shouldn't be as much.
Killerdude
It's a front end issue, Ball joints, tie rod ends, bearings, Basically anything to do with the steering wheels. Quick little test: Jack up the front of your car, Get the jack under the crossmember under the engine in the center. Once jacked, Grab the bottom and top of both tires, and try to move it, If it moves AT ALL, you need new ball joints. (be sure to do this to both sides) Next grab both sides of the wheel and again, try moving it, If it moves it's either a gear box issue or tie rod ends. Make sure you lock the steering before you do this one. When you go to replace anything, mirror what you do to the other side, It'll help in the long run. You really want to do this ASAP, Because if it is more than just unbalanced wheels, You may end up in a major accident at high speeds. PhillBellic
I'd take it to an auto mechanic to get it properly looked at.
Crossed
a lot of people are telling me that all the mud stuck all under an in wheels is causing the imbalance. So I'll clean it real well and then go from there QuackinAColdOne
Killerdude
I've never heard of Mud causing violent shaking at just over 45 MP/h. Like how bad is the shaking? Slight vibration or just straight up wheel is everywhere.
Crossed
Its pretty bad. Like driving over train tracks bad. Bumpy shaky. I'm kinda feeling its a lot more then mud. Killerdude
If it's a slight vibration, It's mud, What you describe is definitely NOT mud. I highly recommend you deal with this immediately.
Crossed
Yeah its a tire rod. Figured it wasn't mud. G's Ah's
Hopefully your car is damaged enough that it's no longer roadworthy and I would therefore take it as a sign from an omnipresent deity that lapses in judgement are going to get you killed. Take it as a sign and use public transport from now on.

Take it as a sign and use public transport from now on. There are no buses or taxis here. And the weather would kill me if I tried a bicycle. I got a 7 mile commute an my tire rod will be fixed before I have to take that drive to work again. Thanks for the help an support everybody. G's Ah's
No public transport is not my problem. Guess you're walking to work. Seven miles shouldn't be too difficult with proper planning, although given the situation you got yourself into, thinking ahead would be kind of difficult for you. Better planning has been a major flaw of mine for too long. Getting it worked on next Friday. Not driving till then.
CarnageRacing00
I've never heard of Mud causing violent shaking at just over 45 MP/h. Like how bad is the shaking? Slight vibration or just straight up wheel is everywhere. Happens all the time. I'm a mechanic, i get a lot of cars coming in with shaking problems and it turns out they just have mud packed in their rims.
don ovdi' island
it could be a variety of things mentioned already. mud yes, if it's severe. clean all the mud out and make sure that there is no air in the power steering pump. air in the lines can cause a terrible vibration when turning. tie rods and ball joints would be my first guess.. even if it's not the problem, i'd get them replaced anyways as they're probably due for one anyways. also, make sure no lugs broke off the wheel hub and that none of the tires are dry rotted or have chunks missing out of them, as they can cause vibrations at higher speeds and lead to blowouts that could injure or kill you, everyone that's in the car with you, and anyone else you may it due to losing control. BigJoe_1
Does the shaking get worse when turing a corner, if so then the problem is likely a damaged track rod end, wheel bearing or a damaged tyre. This can be a really big deal if it isn't dealt with so visit your local garage and get the problem identified and taken care of. If you just leave it the problem can worsen and lead to bigger issues like a damaged axel and driveline damage so get it seen to ASAP. Hopefully the problem isn't isn't too bad.
