Question about Using a Physical CD Key with a Digital Download

Recommended Posts

Hi i plan to preorder GTA 5 for the PC from Best Buy but they don't have a Digital Download and i have a very important question to ask.

I am a US Citizen but am not currently living in the US and was planing to purchase the game with some Best Buy store credit. The game would arrive at my US Home Address in the form of the physical retail copy. Then i would ask my dad to open the game and give me the CD Key in order to play. But since i will have not access to the actual physical disc i am left with just a CD Key but no way to install the game.

My question is there a way i can go about downloading a digital version of the game using a physical version CD Key?

would like to know before i pre order and find that i can't.

If you get a redeemable key inside the box, then it'll be a Steam key, which you'll be able to redeem outside US.
Thing is, nothing is sure for now on how retail version of GTA V PC will work, and so, whether it'll have a Steam key or a regular one like GTA IV.

Then again, if you manage to download GTA V somewhere (maybe torrent?), you will most likely be able to play the game, using the key when installing.

TL;DR: If the retail version features a Steam key, yes.

If it doesn't, then technically no (except if you get the game from other sources).

It is highly unlikely.

Bcz most probably there is speculation that Steam/Digital Key will be different from RGSC/DVD/Physical Key...

That means only your dad will be able to play it.

You will have to download the game from unknown sources and then use your original key, which we at GTAF dont recommend, as we are against piracy.

P.S. I do not recommend you to download pirated game and then use original key to play. I would rather recommend you to cancel the preorder and Preorder the game when its available on Steam.

How is that piracy if he only download the game that he owns. If he would do that, he obviously would not use crack, as he as a key.

But I hope he won't have to do that, and that physical copies uses Steam.

Marshall i'm totally aware of that fact, but i am not sure if that means piracy or not, But thats the only way, as of now.

Info about activation method coming tomorrow

No. Stop. You're a troll.

its coming with all -sys req, tech info, screens or not coming!

no way R^ make suspicious post about this little thing, without everything what we wanted

Well i really wish i knew how to ask this question to a Rockstar employee.

Rockstar won't respond to such a question.

There would be an automated message, saying preorder details and system specs. are not yet available. Please stay tuned to Newswire for information in the coming week.

What!if i just copied my files to a different computer, though i bought that thing, does that mean i am pirate,i paid Rockstar and they licensed me their product so if OP dad's just pass the key to him and dump the disc in dustbin and if the OP downloads the same file from the internet does that make him a pirate?Grow up ffs

Okay, I see this thread is turning into another so-called 'source' discussion, which we really don't need. We've had many of those in the past; it never ended well, and I doubt it'd be any different this time.

That being said, it should be technically possible to redeem a retail key on a digital copy if both use the same DRM, e.g. Steam. But we don't know if that is the case. In short, you will need to wait for a word from Rockstar. All that can be done, at this point, is to speculate.
