The stun gun, spike strips, guard dogs, nightsticks, tear gas and want

Think about it, all of these features are in the game and fully functional.

They are all a major part of law enforcement being able to arrest criminals.

This is a crime game, but you hardly ever get arrested in this game, it seems more like you have to go out of your way to allow the cops to arrest you for it to ever really happen, especially since the cops are so trigger happy so easily in this game.

One of the major complaints is the police and wanted system, some say it's to challenging or annoying, personally I say that it isn't challenging enough, but it's challenging in the wrong way.

In GTA IV when you committed a minor crime, and ran on foot the police would chase you on foot, you could run through alleyways and look back and see a lot of cops chasing you.

This especially worked well, with the vibe of that game, it was great to be able to run through alleyways, climb up fire escapes, hide in project buildings, run through the subway system to escape cops.

Yes the police AI and that game had plenty of flaws as well and yes the cops were to easy.

Now let's switch over to GTA V, the cops AI in terms of combat is somewhat smarter, they drive better and crash into obstacles on the streets less, and the accuracy of their guns is boosted way up ( to a very unrealistic level ), however the character you play as now is also a bullet sponge, with regenerating health and a massive pretty much unlimited amount of weapons.

Gone are the days of a foot chase with the cops that doesn't lead to a shoot out.
Gone are the days of a cop coming up to your car door to arrest you, and you stepping on the gas when his hand is on the door, and watching the physics of him trying to hang onto the door as you speed up and he trips and falls.
Gone are the days of cops actually making arrests.

If you do shoot it out with the cops in this game you will pretty much get a helicopter coming over head within about a minute. You will get into a shootout with even more cops and pretty much they are only going to want to waste your guy. Now this is somewhat understandable that if you shoot at the cops they are going to come after you hard.

But even if you just try to run from a very minor crime, the cops will open fire on you with a gun, and when they start shooting if you try to give up your chase and stay still and surrender the cops will still fire on you.

This game has stun guns, that the AI pretty much never uses ( imagine how interesting it would be to see your character get stunned, and see the physics engine show him shake and interact around objects in new and funny or crazy ways like never before ), why aren't these stun guns used at low wanted levels?

This game has spike strips for police chases, but they tend to only show up behind police vans when you already have gotten into a very violent shootout with cops, what about the cops deploying a roadblock and a spike strip on two sides of a street when you try to escape from a somewhat minor crime while driving away. This would make it so car chases are more realistic and exciting since you would have to avoid the spike strips more often or pick routes that avoid getting blocked in a roadblock. But instead the spike strips are in obvious positions and only happen after a shootout has started.

This game has dogs that attack you in shootouts already and the dogs are pretty vicious by being able to bite and take your character down and waste him in two bites, it has guard dogs protecting areas with security and it has dogs that are with gangs, why didn't the cops get any dogs to flush your guy out of cover?

This game has security using nightsticks and the nightsticks are pretty interesting and fun, as the security guard can swing it and whack your guy and knock him down in a fun and interesting way, why is it that at a low wanted level the cops still just go to the guns when they could beat you up with a nightstick. Why is it that running and bumping into an officer will make him want to shoot you, as opposed to beating you up with his nightstick or stun gunning you?

Last but not least, the tear gas. Basically the tear gas acts just like any other weapon as it drops your health and wastes you. But how about instead of that, the tear gas acts more like it should and disorients your character, in first person view it could make his view get all distorted and blocked off and his eye get watery, as your guy starts to cough and gets shaky and can't stay still well. This makes it so the cops could throw tear gas into a room that you are in and taking cover in before moving in, and disorient you so you can't aim well and can't see well as they rush in.

All of those things would have made the game more sim and realistic, would have made the game more interesting and exciting, and would have been possible since those features are all pretty much in the game but are just not used.

Instead, R* decided to give us a dumbed down simple wanted level that just led to big shootouts.

TLDR edition.

R* should have made it so at low wanted levels cops chased the player and tried not to use deadly force but instead tried to arrest him, and used stun guns, spike strips, guard dogs, nightsticks and tear gas and could have used dogs and tear gas to flush the player out of cover when things got more dangerous as well.

Instead the cops are really aggressive and try to shoot to kill over very minor crimes if you move within a block away from the crime scene and even if you wanted to give up at that point they still try to shoot to kill.

Tear gas also disables the auto lock.

Auto lock as in auto aim?

Never played with that on in the first place, so it doesn't add any additional difficulty or effects then. For free aim players it should make it so it's harder to aim as well to counter balance that.

The entire law enforcement system in V is flawed, of poor design and downright annoying.

Possibly the worst thing about it is the step backwards from all other GTA games. Previous installments had officers chase you on foot with nightsticks, a [relatively] non-lethal option in the apprehension of the player. They took the nightstick out of GTA IV and as you said, reintroduced it to V, but only as a player weapon! Who was the genius that decided that was a fantastic idea? The same goes with stun guns! How difficult would it be to implement them as weapons for police officers to use?

Elements such as these and others that you've mentioned (police dogs etc) are IN the game already and were completely ignored by whoever was in charge of designing the wanted system.

Cops who shoot you on sight with a one star wanted level makes for a boring, tedious and irritating experience in an open world game such as GTA. It's worsened by the fact that the police have super sniper aim and can clock you from streets away with a pistol.

One of my biggest gripes is the police pursuits. Here is what I mean:

invveoKOsjfUb.gif

The rubber-banding of the police vehicles is, at times, infuriating. With a slow vehicle, they will get in front and predict your every move. With a fast vehicle, for example an Adder, they simply rubber-band their way all the way up the road behind you and hit you with the force of a dump truck, spinning you completely off-course.

There are plenty more complaints about the wanted system in this game, but you have already mentioned the main aspects. I wholeheartedly agree with your points, and can only hope that the next GTA is not another step backwards in terms of police.

Cheers!

Yep, pretty much all of these things are in the game but are almost never used.

The cops actually can stun gun your character but only Franklin after a switch scene ( Switch scene where Franklin and Lamar are on Grove Street and Lamar says something to the cop if I recall, if you go and attack the cop I think he will pull out a stun gun and stun Franklin. ) Remember seeing a video of this, when he gets stunned he goes on the floor and rolls around, why they would put in that detail for something that 99% of players probably will never happen to them is odd.

Security guards already use nightsticks and guard dogs, so why can't the police?

With the police, it's probably hard for R* to code really good AI with car chases in traffic, since it's really dynamic and has so many variables, to be honest I don't really notice the issues of the cars doing what they do in that gif or rubber banding but this could be because I play in first person with the HUD off so I would only notice cars that I can actually see and I tend to try and loose the cops sight and find a place to hide anyway. But still the lack of car damage in this game along with the lack of ways for the cops to stop your car kind of makes the cop chases a bit silly, if they used spike strips better and earlier and if they were smarter and were better at doing the PIT maneuver or boxing people in to make them stop and toned down the rubber banding or spawning in front of you it would make for much better chases.

What you see in that gif is a great example of artificial difficulty. Rockstar knows that if they put in APB's on cars or made it so cops track down the player unless he changes his vehicle's appearance that it would frustrate people and make the game to difficult, however if they make the AI fully braindead the game would no longer be a challenge or any fun. So R* took the middle ground and said instead of putting in a detailed APB system or a system to make it so cop chases are harder to get away from, R* decided to just make it so the cops have fake difficulty of magically knowing every turn your going to make so you can't shake them off from the front, similar to how instead of making it so your character has less health and so the cops are really tactical and smart, instead just give the cops really good weapon accuracy instead. But this makes the car chases and shootouts worse, they are less realistic, they take less skills ( since the AI has fake difficulty added that makes it random and outside of the players skills when they lock onto you speeding at 100 mph and can still hit you in a car or box you in in a car chase ), and less interesting.

This is why I try to say that GTA needs to become a more sim like game, when you build a good simulator the game becomes more balanced by what would be expected in real life. Gone would be rubber banding AI or cop cars that could keep up in a car chase with a top level modded up super car, instead the cops would just go by reports of where that car was last located and search for you, or keep a helicopter over it following it, or use roadblocks or spike strips to stop it, and the players job would be to either blow the police fully away, or evade them and hide. The sim mechanics would help every aspect of the game. Rockstar has already shown they are among the best when it comes to putting in great minor details or making a great open world game, every other open world game is far inferior to GTA V, but when it comes to the actual crime aspects R* fell flat with this one.

If R* manages to make the police in the next GTA any kind of step back from the ones in V then they deserve a f*cking medal! Not a positive medal but a medal for accomplishing bullsh*t on impossible levels.

Well Police can go to your door and force you out but that's only if you decide to surrender to them and they do use tear gas to flush you out.

I got it! Plug the controller into controller port 2. That way Psycho Sheriff won't be able to read your mind!

Agree with this, and probably the reason why fighting cops in this game has been really boring compared to my memories of IV or older gta games. Or maybe is just nostalgia..

Cops are way too aggressive, and there is not enough variety in chases.

Helicopters are a nuisance, shoot one down and 3 more spawn instantly.

It's literally impossible to have a decent shootout in this game:

-Enemies die quick

-Your character is a bullet sponge

-Police re spawns is crappy.

The only way for the game to challenge you is by sending dozens of non stop spawning cops and helicopters. It's a very cheap difficulty.

I always imagined chases in the woods with police cops running after us, and dogs could be able to find us if we were hiding.

They could even use the online hands up animation so police know we are giving up and if we get arrested have the car drive us back to the police station, but the twist being that you are able to call for help and get T/F/M to help you escape.

At this point only pc mods can save us. This game has all the necessary ingredients anyway so it's up to us to fix what R* left half assed.

i feel like being arressted is such a pain in the ass that why would you want to be? specially when you are farther into the game, thats a lot of ammo to go buy again and it becomes very tedious i rather just die from the cops.

It should be like this:

If a cop pulls you over for something minor, then when he/she approaches the window you should be given an option to either pay a fine or resist.

Then, if you resist, or are wanted for multiple stars, then instead of being killed everytime, some cops could stun you. Thyen, you awake in jail holding the bars. You should be able to walk around the cell and talk with other inmates, maybe even stumble across a mission or two. But when you approach the cell door, you should be given an option to post bail or to sleep off your time.

There's a lot of bone-head decisions in this game that just ruined it for me.

That was the best thing. Along with the good citizen bonus for taking down criminals running from VCPD officers.

Yeah, or just slowing down and letting them go in one direction to the point where you can hit their rear and spin them around. Even if you can get out of it it annoys the crap out of me every time they do it. It's just no fun having cops that feel psychic.

Additionally, I would have enjoyed this game much, much better if these ideas were fully implemented. In fact, the bullsh*t regarding the cops was a reason I completely abandoned this game in mid October, 2013. :/

p.s. it's called a Taser not Stun Gun. :)

p.s. it's called a Taser not Stun Gun. :)

I know this is an off topic thing to be talking about but Taser is actually a brand name. Though my quick internet research(which may or may not be correct as it was quick) tells me that there are no other companies that currently produce stun guns, in which case if another company started making them the products from said company would not be called Tasers.

Also, since it's a real life brand name it can't be used for the stun gun in GTA V due to copywrite issues.

Some would consider 'Taser' to be a generic trademark (like Band-Aid). I'm sure Rockstar could create a different brand name for it. :) Anyway I found this image for reference;

True, I was really just saying why it's called a stun gun in GTA rather than a Taser. I'd actually like to see a GTA spoof of the Taser brand name, could be interesting.

This guy got some nice driving skills, he knows the drill. GTA V police is ridiculous, and WHAT? Bulletsponge? Your character dies easily, way too easy, even pistols can waste you in 2 seconds. It's ridiculous, police uses lethal force because you punched someone? Really? Afterall it's a game, and I guess it is what it is

Police shouldn't resort to lethal force so quickly and should arrest you agree on that.

But your guy is a bullet sponge since he still takes about 7 or 8 shots before he goes down and that's not counting regenerating health, you could repeatedly take shots, get back to cover, take shots, get back to cover, take shots, get back to cover and keep doing that. The only reason why the cops pop the guy in 2 seconds is because they have way to high aim and accuracy and because this game uses a large number of enemies to fight against you.

That was the best thing. Along with the good citizen bonus for taking down criminals running from VCPD officers.

Cheers!

I agree, I miss the good citizen bonus. Now you get shot for helping the police take down a criminal.

False, you got shot for doing ANYTHING lol

Sadly, this is true. You know the police AI is flawed when you get shot for something as minor(and not even illegal) as standing beside a cop for more than 5 seconds.

I have a feeling that making the police this way was deliberate, rather than lazy programming. I think they wanted to portray the LSPD as trigger happy, blood thirsty psychopaths. Just listen to the taunts they shout. Besides, I think most people would rather get killed and only pay a medical fee rather than get busted and lose all their ammo.

Speaking of which, I know it's pretty much been this way in every GTA game but why is it that getting arrested has greater consequences than dying? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

They have the same basic taunts as the Merryweather security guys, Gruppe 6 guards, the military, gangbangers and even civilians. They ALL shout out un-funny insults and mundane swear words when engaged with the player. They ALL have ridiculously good accuracy and trigger happy attitudes. It's not just the police! Rockstar made the entire enemy element of the entire game that way.

Cheers!
