Ways to improve the storyline of GTA San Andreas

Recommended Posts

glarry

Well I do agree about all of the improvements the OP made. So here are some more to supplement the list

  • Emmet should've given you some missions.
  • The flight missions should at least be much more realistic.
  • Have CJ narrate the story more often.
  • Give CJ some flashback missions, where we could also play as Sweet, Big Smoke, and Ryder in them as well.
  • Have the game's theme focus a bit more on that urban gang life.
  • Get rid of that "Body Harvest" mission. That served no purpose at all for the whole game. Also, get rid of "Monster" too.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

Don't kill Ryder.

- CJ should of been less of a bitch to Tenpenny and Catalina.

- More Mafia missions, those were my favorite missions

- Tommy Vercetti.

- Ryder stays on GSF

-An actual f*cking reason why CJ can't goto SF or LV, all you get is Hernandez saying "dont go ther plz".

-Did Claude even need to be here? Never explained how Catalina met Claude

-Characters barely used at all, for example: Emmet, Big Bear, Salvatore Leone, etc.

-Less of those pointless missions, such as 'Monster' or 'Wrong side of the tracks'

Am I the only one who thought the flight school missions were useful? I found flying quite difficult in SA untill I did the flight school

I'm gonna have to disagree about removing "Monster." Pointless? Probably. However, entering Las Venturas (without cheats) for the first time and riding through the breathtaking desert canyon in a monster truck while listening to "Movin' On Up" by Primal Scream was one of my most memorable experiences with the game.

Heck, I didn't even like the song that much before listening to it during that mission and now I love it. It fit the atmosphere so well.

That being said, if a remake is made, they should find a better way to incorporate the monster truck into a story mission.

-The betrayal of Ryder and BS should be more clearly explained

-More Cesar Vialpando and Kendl!

-More Maccar and Paul!

-More Truth

-I always hoping LS' storyline can be much longer

I don't get why everyone wants Ryder to live or stay friends with CJ so much. Ryder is probably the most blunt about the fact that he f*cking hates CJ, why the hell would he stay his friend? Right off the bat when CJ comes back, Ryder calls him a liability and says that he should have stayed the f*ck away. In the very first mission given by Ryder he tells CJ straight that he'll always be a buster to him. During most of his missions he calls CJ a buster and calls him out on him being a pussy and not knowing what's really going on. He also constantly bitches at him about his driving, and even gets jealous that CJ drives all the time unless Sweet compliments him on his gun skills.

The conversation when driving to the Jefferson Motel has also been cut short a bit in the final release, in the beta it had a few extra lines and once again showed that Ryder and CJ don't like each other at all.

I would've liked to see CJ "care" a bit more about Ryder's betrayal and not just Smoke's, but then again he was a shermhead who everyone pretty much f*cking hated and nobody really gave a sh*t about him.

Sorry for my very late entry, only just started playing SA again after 10 years (PS4 remaster).

For a better story there could have been :

* More gang war sections of the storyline, and not just in Los Santos. Could have documented the LS gangs trying spread into new turf in other cities and towns to expand drug operations.

* More detail and length in the gang war between the Families and Ballas in LS, and the intra-battles between different gang sets dividing the whole Families gang should have gone been much more detailed too. Would have made it more interesting.

* More of the crack dealing stuff in LS ghettos touched upon.

* Officer Hernandez fittingly should have had some link to Chicano and Mexican gangs documented in the story.

Other than that, it was good for what it was.

The thing is Ryder and CJ both had a love-hate relationship with each other. Sure Ryder was rude towards CJ, but I always saw it as being upset with CJ after leaving Los Santos five years prior to the story. Yeah he was a jerk towards CJ, but so what? The arguments between the two were pretty funny and just think about the irony of the "asshole" being loyal to CJ while the "nice guy" is the only traitor. Ryder and CJ were sort of similar to Brian and Stewie from Family Guy. Friends who insult each other but still got love for each other at the same time.

Well anyway, my improvements would be to have the supporting characters who appeared in Los Santos give missions to CJ. I really wanted to see more of B-Dup and Big Bear, see how Bear would get back on his feet after that crack f*cked him up.

I think it would of been nice if Ryder decided to join back GSF and help CJ, Sweet, and everyone else.

That would be nice if Hernandez tried to help them too instead of being killed off.

- Smoke should be focused a little more often in the storyline.

- Ryder stays on CJ's side and gets sent to rehab by C.R.A.S.H. in deference to CJ to keep his homie alive. Then CJ would meet Ryder in LV and the two would work together in LV in a similar fashion as CJ and Cesar in SF.

- More of Big Bear and B-Dup, as well as Emmet.

- Bigger backstory of the Seville Boulevard Families and Temple Drive Families. I wanna know the Grove's relationship with them.

- Ryder's homie LB makes an appearance.

- Like OP said, it would be cool to play flashback missions where we could probably play as either Sweet, Smoke, or Ryder. Maybe they could show us how Brian died and how CJ was responsible for his death.

- Hell more focus on the Grove Street Families.

I have some things that could potentially make it more realistic/grounded.

-Taking out all of the missions that don't make sense for a gangster game, such as Black Project, the Flight School missions, etc.

-Added more depth to Big Smoke's betrayal. It seems like he doesn't have any motives for going to the Ballas, it just seems like his reasons are "Tenpenny and the Ballas will pay me well!" But is that really his reason for going to the rival gang? Maybe if his reasons were "The Families just aren't there anymore. The ballas have taken over the "market", and they get all of the money in. The Families are losing the gang war, and I want to be successful, even if it means betraying my homies."

I think that would be a better reason for Big Smoke betraying the Families.

I disagree with this. GTA SA wasn't really a gangster game. If anything, it's more of a parody of the early 90s type game. If was truly a gangster game then there wouldn't be any radio stations other than Radio Los Santos. Don't get me wrong, I love old school rap music but I'm sure not many people are big fans of the genre. I personally believe the missions were fine as they were since they gave the audience relief from the gangsta theme which not many are fans of. The Grand Theft Auto series tends to be more open in their games which is why they're popular. We have seen how gangster only based games turned out to be like 25 to life and we know how terrible those games are.

Also, Rockstar is known for making its game appeal for wider audiences, not just a specific group of people.

Emmet was one of the biggest wastes of a character I've seen in the entire franchise. He's set up as a paranoid, rambling, out-of-date nutcase who sells guns from a dumpster he probably found around the back of an abortion clinic. Not only does he nearly blow his own hand off in his introductory scene but we notice he's set up shop literally two doors down from a licensed gun seller with horseshoe facial hair and a voice so creamy and commanding even T-Bone Mendez would loosen his slacks. What's not to love? Instead, Emmet gives us a rubbish firearm and kicks us out of his "shop" so he can presumably pleasure himself over Ammunation's sexiest staff 2004 calendar. Two or three missions where Emmet sends us packing to intercept a delivery truck or even a set of assassination challenges wouldn't have gone amiss, but I suppose we can't have everything - at times the storyline is as bloated as Auntie Poulet's brassiere.

I felt the desert was a little bit of a waste too. Sure, we're sent on a wild goose chase to retrieve a jetpack from somebody who really ought to have overdosed back in the 1970s, and we're also sent packing on an equally ridiculous escapade to steal some green milkshake from a moving train packed with soldiers who couldn't fight their way out a piss-soaked paper bag. I'd had enough of The Truth long before the countryside strand had ended, so having to deal with another rambling conspiracy nut might have proved exhausting. That being said, I don't think we saw nearly enough of the landscape - there are some truly lonely and even chilling locations in the desert that could have been utilised in some manner or another. From small town shoot-outs to drug exchange interference I feel like I would have appreciated more expansion in the desert.

-Put three protagonists cj for los santos, cesar for san fierro,wu zi mu for las venturas. Why?Cj was a gangstar in the beggining of the game and in the ends he have part of a cassino really?

-Ryder do not betray the grove,he was charismatic and he lost this after the betrayal,if he was killed kill him in las venturas on one of the last missions.

-Ken rosenberg should explain more about what happend in vice city,in the end of vice city he and tommy where looking to be great friends and then in SA they separated from each other.

-The truth misson should have been optional

-The missions with catalina could be better if claude(who is a friend of her and start dating with her after the last catalina mission)is with us.

-Big bear should have been killed in one of the first missions to show that the grove isn´t strong anymore

-Oficcer hernandez should have killed pulaski with cj

-Salvatore should have maked more missions

-Mike toreno should explain far better why he need cj help

-Sweet should complain more about his brother and show him that he commited the same error again going away from the hood.

-Donald love should have apeared

-Emmet should have his missions that when completed new weapons would apear in his place

-Phil cassidly should have apeared in this game

-The las venturas part was rushed

-I think that they should explain more how brian died

-Og loc was just unecessary

But away from that everything is ok

GTA San Andreas has the greatest storyline of all time.

Agree. The best storyline, the best characters and the best/funniest GTA I've played so far.

Topic: The ending should've been better explored. CJ screwed his life in the end and some players (like me, initially) didn't even noticed it.

I would have multiple protags here instead of just CJ.

Also remove the silly Jetpack and green goo mission, that was just too much.

I actually didn't mind CJ for LS and the countryside. SF was fine to a certain extent but Cesar would have been more fitting there and for LV Tommy would have been great

Overall GTA SA would have been so much better if it was more focused on gangbanging and the whole hood stuff. The whole mob angle etc. didn't fit at all. Its like they weren't confident that a whole game focused on gangbanging would be successful so they just added bunch of other things to it even though it wasn't fitting.

Failure

- Emmett and Big Bear should have appeared in the end, congratulating CJ after Tenpenny's death. Later on, there should a phone call from B Dup who returns from rehab and says he's clean.

- Salvatore is forgotten after the heist. There should have been a mission in which Salvatore sends his men to attack the Four Dragons and try to capture CJ. CJ kills them all in a casino shoot-out. After a major setback, Salvatore withdraws from Las Venturas.

- More missions involving Los Santos Vagos.

- Lesser Catalina missions.

- CJ should have gone inside the GSF meeting with Sweet in the Jefferson Motel, so we can get more info on the story of Seville Boulevard Families and Temple Drive Families.

- After CJ's return, he immediately starts going after Smoke. CJ should have destroyed Smoke's hidden supplies of coke so that he would be more powerless when he finally confronts him. This could add bigger roles for the Russian Mafia.

- The Vercetti gang should have been somehow added into the game, or at least should be referenced. It would be interesting to know what the Leones, Sindaccos and Forellis thought about the Tommy.

Might as well post on here.

Los Santos:

*Explain the context of the gang rivalries in the city i.e. Ballas, Families, Vagos, Aztecas, and why all the gangs are at odds with each other and why some formed alliances. In addition, explain the history of all the gangs and how they formed.

*Frank Tenpenny's background needs to be explained much better. What drives him to be such a corrupt asshole? How did he join and gain power in the LSPD and how has he been able to manipulate crime so much in Los Santos? Why is he friends with Fernandez and Pulaski?

*Fernandez could have been an ally to GSF and Aztecas; he could've betrayed CRASH (he was treated like sh*t) and formed as a whistleblower; otherwise he had no depth.

*Add more to why Big Smoke even betrayed GSF in the first place. All we see are his meetings with CRASH and that's it. Was it because he wanted to deal drugs and felt the GSF were collapsing due to their opposition to crack? Did he have some internal struggle with Sweet during this time? How much did he get paid to flip? His true intentions are never known.

*Better yet, give Ryder a better backstory. He had pretty much no reason to betray GSF. It would've made more sense to have killed him off right after Sweet is shot as well. Or, it would've been nice to have had him along for the ride instead of just having him betray GSF for no reason.

*Big Bear and B Dup need a much larger role other than just being in the background. Hell, Emmet should've played a much larger role and his place could've been an alternative to Ammu Nation; otherwise he's effectively useless.

*LB should've actually made an appearance.

*Cesar and CJ's friendship is explained in better depth.

*Cesar and Kendl's relationship is explored and explained better as well.

*Andrei the Russian Mafia goon had a distinct model and actor; he shouldn't have been killed early in the game and could've served as a larger antagonist in the game since the Russian Mob had relationship with Loco Syndicate.

*A better explanation of "sets" in the game

*A gang wide treaty similar to the real life Bloods Crips treaty in the 90s?

*Gang Wars could've been expanded where GSF members would automatically join you and you could form protection rackets, etc kinda like VCS. A lot of the ambient shops are just useless and it would've been interesting if they were actual gang fronts.

*The option to kill OG Loc.

*The Aztecas shouldn't be hostle.

San Fierro:

*Remove RC Zero's mission entirely. They're pretty much annoying and RC Zero isn't that big of a character anyway.

*More context on the SF gang rivalries and histories of the Rifa, Triads, and Da Nang Boys. It also would've made sense to have the Russian Mafia and Italian Mafia to have base in SF as well.

*The whole "bury the foreman" mission (Deconstruction) is flawed and one of the worst; it feels a bit mean spirited even for GTA (seriously, who buries a foreman in a portapotty in cement for calling their sister a hooker? I understand that's very serious but still). Either have Kendl actually get assaulted, CJ extort the construction site (and make it a front), or better yet, remove the mission entirely. It's pointless filler that literally has no change in the storyline.

*Alcatraz should've stayed in the game

*The Truth could've had a few more missions in the SF side involving his... stuff.

*More depth to T-Bone Mendez and the Da Nang Boys/Rifa, and why they want to expand to Los Santos.

Las Venturas:

*Paulie's death also felt a bit mean spirited and also doesn't really have a huge effect on the story.

*The whole heist mission should've been done before the player would have been allowed to advance back to LS.

*Some more Casino Wars submissions between the Triads and Mafia

*Why the heck did you even have to fly to Liberty City manually in the first place? Should've just been able to fly there automatically.

Countryside:

*Area 69 mission should've been much more about stealth and much better designed

*Some of those distances were annoying as hell. Give us the trip skip feature more!

*An actual Bigfoot mission

*Make the flying missions much more tolerable and easier

*Bring back "The Truth is Out There"

*Actual UFOs

*Some more use for the Countryside... it just appeared to be barren and empty... something like random characters and events there like in GTA IV/V which would've added more to the creepiness

General:

*Have an actual history of San Andreas like of Liberty City in GTA IV

*Being able to "hang out" with characters and friends which helps the player learn more about everyone's backstory

*Random characters/events

*More Early 1990s real life events being mentioned in the game further reflecting the social atmosphere

*A better explanation of the crack epidemic in San Andreas and why its so important in the storyline

*Tommy Vercetti. What even happened to Ken and Tommy that caused Ken to go to San Andreas?

I think the only way I would improve this game is to get rid of Ryder because in all honesty, he ruined the first half of the game. It should be just Big Smoke as CJ's buddy along with his brother Sweet and CJ tries to get Big Smoke back on his side. That's how I would improve the storyline.

GTA : SA as it's whole is already a great games story wise IMO.. It's never about restricted to the gangster life of Los Santos, however it's actually a journey of CJ from his gang-banging lifestyle to see the other place in the world that he never seen nor experienced before when he spent his time in both San Fierro and Las Venturas before conclude everything in Los Santos once again.. so i guess the so called unrealistic mission such as "Black Project" and "Green Goo" serve their purpose since "realistic" is never the best part of GTA after all.. not to mention said mission and Black Project in particular is among the best mission in the entire SA games IMO..

As for the addition..

- Ryder : I guess we can all agree that Ryder is underdeveloped be it as a character or as an antagonist.. I thought both of his betrayal and death is pretty underwhelming and could be much better if they fleshed him out a little bit.. and i do agree to some member in this forum whereas he would be much better if stay as an ally and aid him during his exile in SF and LV

- The Last Part of Los Santos : I think the last part of the story (Vertical Bird onward) is a bit to rushed and it would be much better if they take time to conclude the story such as the mission in the beta whereas CJ have to kidnap a russian mafia which would later made the protagonists to find Big Smoke location instead of only occupied 40% of the area before Sweet automatically know his whereabouts

Evil empire

-The Truth should have been here from the beginning of the game and interact even more with CJ because he's so great.

-Ryder shouldn't have been a traitor but instead remain beside of CJ until the end.

-The Freefall and Supply lines missions should have been removed.

-Some missions after the heist with the mafia families retaliating and CJ making an alliance with Tommy Vercetti would have been very funny.

-A set of missions with CJ having to escort Hernandez who wants to denunce the CRASH's crimes would have been a good addition.

-A set of missions where CJ finds and kills those who murdered his brother Brian and his mother would bring more depth to the storyline.

* The Los Santos gang war section early on in the game is much longer.

* The Families finally decide the only way to really compete with the Ballas is to enter the crack trade, and try to take control over it.

* The Families and Ballas spread out to San Fierro and Las Venturas and clash there too, not just Los Santos.

* CJ tracks down and finds the actual killers of his mother, and then kills them before confronting Big Smoke.

* More missions involving the Vagos, I felt they were very under-used.

* Tommy Vercetti makes some kind of appearance and has some involvement in the Mafia missions.

* The Russians try to take over the Mafia's Las Venturas operations, CJ is hired by the Leones to assist in defending it.

* Those over-the-top Mike Toreno missions are removed, and replaced with more realistic stuff.

- Bigger focus on the hood aspect. That was the most unique & interesting part of the game (we already have plenty of mob stuff in GTA games). I would make the last part in LS way longer and more complex (instead of just rehashing the gang wars for many missions). The first LS arc is one of the best parts of any GTA for me.

- Remove Las Venturas and maybe the desert too. The Mafia stuff isn't even badly done but it just doesn't fit CJ's story. At least in SF he is destroying the Loco Syndicate (which is directly related to the main story). In LV he is just dicking around and getting involved in sh*t for no reason. The story would flow better if he went to LS after SF imho.

- Delete the Jetpack mission & green goo bullsh*t. This isn't Saints Row.

- Give CJ clearer goals post LS and make him a more consistent character (no one minute being a pussy and the next a ruthless cool guy). Some sort of confrontation between Sweet and CJ is needed if he still acts like in the main game here (doesn't care about the hood after LS & wants to move on but instead of standing up to Sweet he acts like a pussy).

- More of Smoke and especially Ryder, cool characters that are just shafted after the first arc. Ryder goes out like a bitch.
