Set your PS4 to 720p

That makes no f*cking sense. Why would i set my game on 720p when i have a 1080p TV and the game itself is designed for 1080p?

The old gen V indeed looked better in 720p but not the new gen.

If you want the best out of your new gen V you`ll play it on 1080p otherwise the diferences in graphics and draw distance wont be so noticeable.

I`ve even bought a huge ass new 1080p TV just for the sake of new V because i knew i wont see much diferences if i`m going to watch it on 720p. And i wasn`t wrong, i did the test by pluging it into my old 720p and the diference from old gen was almost unnoticeable.

I did not make the test on GTA V but the other day my friend and I wanted to play MLB The Show 14 but my brother was watching TV. So I plugged my PS4 on my 720p TV, which upscale to 1080i but the game looked terrible on both 720p and 1080i. In fact, 1080i is worse than 720p IMO. I thought it was almost looking worse than MLB The Show 12 on my PS3.

The only new gen game that I've heard that is better in 720p than 1080p, is The Evil Within.

btw what`s 1080i ? It`s not the same as 1080p right?

I haven`t seen any new TV that would have 1080i, the either have 720p or 1080p, so 1080i had some old TVs?

I can't explain in detail what is 1080i, as I don't really know myself, but I think it is an upscaled 720p. So that's why native 720p looks better than 1080i.

Yes my TV is kinda old, that's why I play on my brother's. He has a full HD.

So you have a problem, and want everyone to do the same as you? Just because?

I guess they called it sharing, started The Pirate Bay, and got caught just 3 days ago.

It has to do with how the image is rendered, the I means interlaced.

1080i is still superior to 720p but inferior 1080p, although the difference it's not that..noticeable.

As far as i`m familiar with, 1080i isn`t available anymore for new LED TVs, some newer tube TVs had that resolution right?

Anyway since we have all four TVs at home (old CRT, HD, FULL HD and 4k) I`ve managed to do the test on my own. I pluged my PS4 with V to each TVs via SCART and HDMI and i`ve noticed that 1080p TV does the best.

V looks the best on 1080p, way better than on 720p and even considerably better than on 4K.

The NG V is made for 1080p so it will look the best on 1080p TV. As for sharpness you just need to adjust the PS, game and TV settings the way it looks the best.

Some people also have the ingame field of depth turned on by default and that`s what makes the game looks blurry.

Great idea! I have no idea why i havent done this, my tv is a little too big for my preference which could be a draw back playing on a lower Rez. None the less I will be sure to try this out and report back on it. I notice these texture popins literally the entire time i play and will for sure welcome any ideas to remedy this, especially if devs would worry about stability and immersion before graphic fidelity and on screen objects.

Can you describe little more those texture popins?

Like when you fly a plane and when you come to the certain point the windows on the buildings show up and suddenly become more clear? Is that what you mean?

Because i think that happens anyway, no matter on what resolution you play. It can`t be otherwise, since the clear textures can`t be seen from far distance no matter how good graphics, draw distance or TV res. is.

At least i think so however i`m no expert.

Is that to combat tired eyes? I get the mean crazy tired eyes playing this at night with the light off.

No dude there is nothing to combat that. Youre supposed to play with at least some sort of background or ambient light even at night. Its really bad for your eyes not to have that and will damage them over time.

A small lamp somewhere in the room will do.

Most TV's have a game mode. Use it and the game will run a lot more smoothly and if you don't have one just turn off all the extra processing.

You guys... i'm just talking about softening the image. The lower resolution still looks good, but it's softer and doesn't hurt my eyes as much. On 1080p, the stuff in the distance has so many tiny pixels shimmering that it's distracting.

By the way, this is the only PS4 game I have had an issue with in regards to being too sharp. Seriously though, when I'm driving and I see cars in the distance, the aliasing is making me want to poke my eyes out. Especially on big square trucks, telephone polls, and fences.

All of this is greatly reduced when setting it to 720p.

To me, 1080p is over-rated anyway.

I'm using a computer monitor. I like computer monitors because there's no input lag, and with certain models you get faster refresh rates for minimal ghosting. My particular monitor has an over-drive option to further reduce ghosting, so it's almost like playing on a plasma or CRT (although still not completely ghost free, but it's close).

Input lag often comes due to unapropriate or cheap HDMI cable. If you use the original PS4 HDMI you get along with console there should be minimum to no input lag.

Or use the HDMI with golden conectors.

I used unoriginal cheap HDMI cable on my PS3 and the input lag was disastrous. Then when i replaced it with better one it was ok.

What I wanna know is why is all this texture pop in, AA etc so noticeable in GTA V compared to other games, and why isn't it improved from the PS3 version that much?

Yes I know it's a big open world but I don't even recall GTA IV having these issues as much.

Another thing I've noticed, when your driving switch to cinematic view and look at the difference, no jaggies or texture pop ins and it looks much smoother and just nicer to look at, so why does it look better when in cinematic view compared to the normal third person driving view, or even on foot?

I think it's because 4 was smaller. I could be wrong.

High speed HDMI cables do work better but that monster crap is a rip off. Get high speed cables at Gamestop and they should work fine.

That's actually not true at all. Some TVs have higher amounts of input lag, even on game mode, but some TVs are pretty speedy where you don't really notice (but a little bit of lag is still there) however, a computer monitor canot have any lag because you have to be able to control a cursor accurately, so gaming on a computer monitor is the best option for those bothered by input lag. Also, HDTVs tend to have slower response times (my actual TV has 4ms, but my monitor is 1ms)

Big Black Man

I know what you're thinking... why would you want to set your PS4 to 720p when the main focus is 1080p for PS4 games.

Well, I have to say, GTA V looks better at 720p (to me) because 1080p just looks too sharp. You can see stuff in the background flickering and aliasing all over the place... especially when things have to fade into view... they just have that interlaced look you know? It's too sharp for my eyes. I have the sharpness turned all the way down by the way, and it's still too sharp and the shimmering edges on everything is hard to bare sometimes.

Now, I set my PS4 to 720p and yes, the image is a bit softer, but it's much easier on my eyes. I don't see quite the large amount of shimmering anymore on things in a distance. The extra bit of blur helps to smooth it out and almost give it an anti-aliased look.

It's not a 100% fix because you can still see some pixel shimmering due to the lower resolution, but the overall picture is easier to look at.

Well, try it and let me know what you guys think. It can't hurt anything.

By the way... even at 720p, the image is still cleaner and way more detailed than the PS3 version. Just in case anyone thinks you'll get PS3 quality by setting it to 720p.

As an added bonus, you don't notice LOD pop-in as much at 720p either.

you need to get a Samsung or LG. that will fix the problem.

No it won't.

I'm running a 1080p monitor 1:1 with no scaling. No edge enhancements, no sharpness, no picture enhancements... just as pure as you can get and the game is still way too sharp. It needs better anti-aliasing. That's why I find that 720p doesn't hurt my eyes as much. I don't strain my eyes as much looking at the softer image. 720p puts a blur over the entire image just enough to make the details blend better and not so shimmery and fine.

Yeah, I know it's designed to run at 1080p, but when it strains my eyes, I do something about it. I mean, you can see a cross-hatching/interlacing type effect with objects in the distance as they fade into view. That's extremely distracting. With 720p, you don't see that stuff because it's blurred.

Also, I've spent years gaming at 720p and this is still way cleaner than standard 720p on the PS3.

Anyway... nobody has to do this unless they have a problem with the pixel shimmering on this game. Like I said before, I don't have an issue with any other next-gen game. They all look great. This is the only one that is too sharp for me.

HDMI version 1.0 supported 1080p 60Hz.

The worst thing that can happen is, that the signal totally breaks with a very cheap and insanely long cable, but that you notice.

No! Get a new tv. I feel this thread is a joke with everyone saying 720p looks better.

And 1080i is two 540p pictures being mashed together real fast. 720p is better than 1080i.

The game us not too sharp ffs, it's just high definition. Thinking 720p does anything good apart from blur it is ridiculous.

You`re right and wrong at the same time.

While those expensive HDMI cables are marketing moves, on the other hand you notice a diference.

But that diference is noticeable when the cable is longer than 3m. In that case you need high speed cable otherwise the input lag and sound will sucks.

You wont notice much diference between cheap and expensive cable with gold conectors if it`s shorter than 2m.

However i have big TV so i needed a long cable and in my case the diference between cheap noname cable and expensive one was huge.

The sound was 50% better and the input lag was almost non-existant.

The best cable is of course the one you get along with PS4 but since it was too short for me i had to invest 60€ in high speed cable.
