Tycek
Well, let's see: -System Shock II -That's without any debate one of the best, if not the best atmospheric games ever created. Being "alone" on a huge and open world spaceship, combined with these claustrophobic corridors and fantastic Eric Brosius' music, results in bricks being shat. -Deus Ex: HR - beautifully created world, full of even the smallest details and the wonderful McCann music. True vision of the nearest future and nice present recreation of Blade Runner (I got to agree with Daz - and that doesn't happen too often - that is always amazing). -Fallout 3 - I bash this game pretty often, but atmosphere was one of the brightest points of that game. The same can be said about The Pitt. -Terminator: Future Shock - one of the best and most atmospheric Bethesda games. Post apocalyptic LA was even better than Washington DC from FO3. -GTA IV - fantastic recreation of present day NYC during autumn, which can be really taken for a living breathing city. esmittystud101
I like Far Cry 4 myself. Most do not agree with pretty much any new game out on current gen consoles now, but not me. I'm taking it all in. When I fly the buzzer in FC4, flying by the trees and such. I just ain't seen anything like it so far when it comes to wilderness and mountain areas. Graphics are amazing on it. Menaced
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks had the best atmosphere of any game that I've ever played, even to this day. Aside from that, I thought GTA: San Andreas had a pretty memorable atmosphere, especially around the badlands and desert at night. I'm also constantly recommending the Half-Life series to people who have never played it, largely due to its amazing atmosphere. Abel.
Ducard
As far as non-GTA games go, I'd go with Fallout 3, Far Cry 3 and half life 2 Fallout 3's was simply amazing. So immersive. Everytime I fire it up, I feel like I've teleported into DC. You never knew where danger was lurking and I always felt relieved when I came across humans after fighting my away through a horde of super mutants. Same goes for half life 2. That was also an incredible game. Far Cry 3, well I just loved the tropical settings and hunting animals never gets old. Great ambience sounds and just a great atmosphere overall. As far as gta games go? Well, they've all been brilliant, haven't they? Edited December 15, 2014 by Ducard Mister Pink

Guest Billy Russo
I thought Heavy Rain had a fantastic atmosphere. I'm personally not a big fan of the Game itself, but it really nailed the tone of the story.

Fireman
I thought the post-apoc atmosphere was done much better in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than in Fallout, much bigger sense of danger, in Fallout I sometimes felt like I was in a theme park. I still consider Sanitarium to have the best atmosphere, though it might just be because it's easier to "feel" the atmosphere in horror games. nath22
Red Dead is the correct answer. Vice City, the most recent Wolfenstein and Mass Effect 1/2 were all good too, even AC Unity. Edited December 16, 2014 by nath22

MurphyPen43
Fallout 3 is very atmospheric especially in the metro tunnels. Dishonored and The Last of Us. Rage is very atmospheric in certain parts and Alien Isolation.
GTA_stu
MGS3 had some really good atmosphere. The boss battle v The End in the jungle particular. When I played it the first time, oh man it was so incredibly tense. Never felt like that in a game before or since.
RedDagger
Although I agree with a lot already said - particularly Fallout 3 - gonna throw in Kerbal Space Program. It has an awesome sense of scale, which helps for the sense of loneliness when in outer space, even orbiting a planet/moon. The music fits it very well, the nice little effects like when the sun is peeking out from behind a planet, and (although it's kinda cheating) some mods do a great deal to make the atmospheres feel proper as a boundary between ground and space. Sky colours, weather, clouds, it all ties together nicely.

The Don Son
Bioshock Infinite just had an utterly depressing Sunday afternoon feel to me. Dishonored, while similar, had an opposite effect though. I enjoyed it much more. I think it's more mood depending though. A first impression can be hard to break. Sir Michael
Fallout 3. Those tunnels were spooky as hell, as was running into any form of Giant Radscorpion. Things are terrifying, especially the Albinos. Another one I'd like to mention is Dead Money from New Vegas. Thrown into an Old World villa with nothing but a Holorifle, enemies that need a serious beatdown to kill, traps everywhere, medical items being scarce, and the fear of getting attacked by those holograms, that DLC had dark and eerie written all over it. The story was the best of all the DLC, in my opinion of course. Edited December 20, 2014 by Sir Michael Tycek and Vaulttec
Onett
Well. Silent Hill 2- Yeah, this is kind of a given here, but I gotta mention it. The limited vision thanks to the fog, which also doubled as a crutch for the PS2's limited RAM, creates a sense of claustrophobia and doom. You're also alone at most points of the game and that helps without a doubt. And there's the soundtrack. Holy sweet goddamn, the soundtrack. Bioshock- Underwater city where it's inhabitants have gone completely batsh*t insane after a decade of substance abuse, set in an Art Deco city where the power's a bit faulty, set in an alternate 1960? Yeah.

Guest Billy Russo
The original Hitman games on PS2, they had a really dark and creepy feel. Completely agree, especially Contracts. There's a Mission that takes place in this Hotel or something, can't exactly remember the name. It's the one with that Ghost you can find. That had an amazing atmosphere. Especially when you explored the ground level that was all taped off because it was a crime scene. Edited December 22, 2014 by Billy Russo
