GTA "Controversy"

As mentioned, this argument is just about as old as the Bible. Nothing's gonna happen to our game

So once again GTA is controversial, this time for torture and violence towards women. It's been targeted with petitions and calls for censorship and banning.

 

What do you think this means for the future of GTA? How do you think R* should respond? (And how do you think they will actually respond?)

 

What should we as gamers do with this third, or is it fourth, crusade against our culture?

This has ALWAYS been an issue with GTA. For year and years now.... this is nothing new. So to answer your question, as far as the future of GTA..... nothing will change. It will stay the course.

No I'm 30. But the reason I asked is because I see how the argument has shifted and the players involved grow more influential.

 

The old argument was abrasive and reactionary: kids are being violent in games! Quell horreur!

The new argument is nuanced and deliberate. It wasn't a reaction so much as a planned attack. The language is more sinister. It's less Church Lady (my age showing there lol) and more Ned Flanders. The new argument is "we have to have a conversation about this" and that good people don't make the games and good people don't play them. It's been wrapped up in progressive issues such as equal representation and gender issues. More specifically the counter-argument was naturally framed, viz a viz Jack Thompson et al., "I am against censorship" now the counter-argument has been carefully formed by master sophists and rhetoricians into "I am for virtual depictions of sadism towards women."

 

I guess I just see this latest salvo as of a different nature than the old attacks. This time it is being picked up by games press and old traditional allies of creative expression have turned their backs on video games, a persona non grata among artistes.

 

I'll stop rambling now. It looks bad to me though; this politicized environment around games development.

This whole 'controversy' thing has been a big pile of over-sensitive dog turd. If the game had missions like "Beat the hell out of your teenager daughter" or "Tear Mary a New One" then I'd have a different opinion.

 

Also where was the torture against women? I don't remember this at all. Only torture I remember was in Single Player, and the victim was male.

If the violence in the game was specifically aimed at women (as the petition implies, "This misogynistic GTA 5 literally makes a game of bashing, killing and horrific violence against women" - A hilariously wrong statement) there could be a valid point, but the violence in V obviously isn't targeted at a gender. What, would it be best if you couldn't kill prostitutes?

 

I think all of this can be briefed as the case of a specific group trying to impose their views on a majority, not through equality but instead demanding a special treatment. Equality ends when a group, whether it's a gender, a race, a religion, a nationality, etc, asks for special treatment.

In the game it's equal, in fact more violence towards men in all honesty.

But in real life it's a case of equal opportunities, equal rights, but we're not exactly the same.

The real issue is all the 8 year olds online. All equipped with microphones squeeking insults all over the place.

So where exactly are the parents and why would they buy an 18+ game for a child and equip them with a headset so they can chat along with perfect strangers online?

It's rated 18+ for a reason. You need to have the maturity to understand that this is an over exagerrated caricature of the world we live in. If you can't understand that and you take certain aspects of the game seriously then you have nothing to do on gta.

 

This is a VIDEO GAME, it's FICTION, and it's for ADULTS.

I can't remember anything from SP that was violent particularly to females.

Does the game portray women as objects? Yes. Does it portray men as objects? Yes. Everything is turned into an object in this game. The pedestrians, both male and female, are walking epitomes of the good, bad and ugly of society. It's meant to be that way and we feel right at home with it. Why do some little boys grow up to commit violence against women? Domestic violence? Television shows? Who knows? But the fact of the matter is that if some kid is torturing prostitutes on GTA, he brought the baggage to the game.

 

It amazes me that they made a stink about the prostitutes, but nothing in regards to that horrible mission where we had to torture that guy. Prostitutes are real and commonplace, I could creep off in the middle of the night to the nearest city and buy a woman's service. But torture, while in some dark corner out there in the world it might be commonplace in broad daylight, here in my sober little soccer mom-tax lawyer dad haven it is far from ordinary.

No, I didn't take out my weapon at all, because I was trying to switch to passive mode.

 

EDIT: And I can't level strength unless I actually beat up people, and that rarely happens in missions.

The only legitimate argument I ever heard against GTA V was from a former prostitute who was abused frequently in her line if work. She was simply horrified that people could be entertained by a simulation of such horrid events.

I had no response to that and I could honestly live just fine without the arbitrary inclusion of sex workers in the game. It IS true that they serve no other purpose than to sate the perverted desires of Rockstar's fanbase.

Male on woman violence is different in real life than a game.

 

Real life: woman is obviously more venerable, weaker, less defense from an attacker.

 

why is it a double standard? It's not, in terms of melee violence. Women cannot defend themselves from a male attacker the way another man can. they just cant. it takes a real weak-hearted "man" to attack a woman IRL. In terms of gun violence, then it doesn't matter if you got a stick or a cat between your legs, a bullet will put you down either way.

R* isn't going to change anything. And they shouldn't. Why should they be singled out over something that literally every other company in the industry does? What about the games that exclude females altogether? Where's the petitions for them?
